A significant chunk of that money was strategic, in that it came from tech companies rather than venture capitalists or other institutions. The company has refocused much of its product development on generative AI, and its newly rebranded Gemini model, adding features into search, documents, maps and elsewhere. Alphabet and Nvidia are also investors in Runway ML, a generative AI company known for its video-editing and visual effects tools. Microsoft has invested in many of the techniques underpinning generative AI through its Microsoft Research division. Apple researchers recently published details of their work on MM1, a family of small AI models that can take both text and visual input.

The Securities and Exchange Commission's chair, Gary Gensler, recently warned about "AI washing," or companies giving off a false impression that they're using AI so they can amp up investors. And while some companies are simply exaggerating the tech they do legitimately use, others have taken it a step further. Most companies aren't being accused of breaking the law with their AI chatter, but they're definitely posturing around it. With semiconductor stocks losing momentum over the past few weeks, Intel's strength is starting to show some cracks and at risk of a pullback. Ever since, Intel (INTC) has been playing catch-up, and early last year, investors started to pay attention and boost the shares. The momentum turning negative, coupled with the poor relative strength, suggests INTC could be headed for some further downside towards its $37 breakout level. This leads to risks to the downside as relative strength and momentum slows for INTC. Arm Holdings is a UK-based semiconductor and software design company that has been around for quite some time and been through multiple corporate events, changes of ownership and multiple large investors. The majority shareholder of Arm (ARM) is Japanese conglomerate Softbank, which bought the company in 2016 before taking it public again on the Nasdaq in 2023. The stock formed a base into March, held $120-area support and is now mounting another attack after breaking the gray dotted downtrend resistance/trigger level at $135. I do not yet hold the stock, but I am looking to add to our holdings at current levels and will require the stock to remain above that $135 breakout level now serving as support. Investors looking to bet on the artificial intelligence boom may want to take a look at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing , according to JPMorgan. Analyst Gokul Hariharan reiterated his overweight rating on the semiconductor maker, a supplier to chip majors such as Nvidia , Advanced Micro Devices and Qualcomm , saying that "all roads in AI semis lead" to the company. Within the next three to four years, Hariharan expects Taiwan Semiconductor to maintain its greater-than 90% market share of AI-connected processor silicon. By 2026, he forecasts the company's revenues can hit $119 billion, driven by robust growth in high-performance computing as AI training and inference demand grows. A solid setup for the company's 3 nanometer process technology for chipmakers such as Nvidia should also benefit revenues.

China is unlikely to push Apple out of the country, Shehzad Qazi of China Beige Book told CNBC. "In sectors where they think reliance on American firms — software, hardware, anything talked about — is going to become a national security threat, they want American companies out. "In essence Apple needs China and China needs Apple despite all the noise," he said. "With 90% of the supply chain cemented in China Apple will over time move some manufacturing to India, Vietnam, and other regions. However, the vast majority of its iPhone production and suppliers will remain in China and this trip was Apple essentially doubling down on China."

China has rolled out new guidelines that will phase out U.S. processors in government computers and servers, effectively blocking chips from Intel and AMD , the Financial Times reported on Sunday. The procurement guidelines, unveiled on Dec. 26, are now being enforced and will also impact Microsoft 's Windows operating system and foreign-made database software as they favor Chinese alternatives, the report said. Government agencies higher the township level have been ordered to purchase "safe and reliable" processors and operating systems, FT said. AMD declined to comment on the report while Intel did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. This comes as China has been boosting its domestic semiconductor industry as it seeks to reduce reliance on foreign technology.

That's what Nvidia needed semiconductor design firm Synopsys to do to make this next generation of chips. Right now, Nvidia has had not one, but two different breakthroughs: Accelerated computing at a ridiculously fast speed and generative artificial intelligence. I think Jensen regards Dell as a crucial partner when it comes to installing Nvidia's systems anywhere. Do I think Nvidia would like to do more business with Apple? I think Nvidia would like to do more business with everyone, including alleged opponent Intel .

All that changed three years ago, when a global chip shortage and rising geopolitical tension turbocharged growth at TSMC. TSMC set up the Newcomer Training Center inside a sprawling science park in the city of Taichung in central Taiwan in 2021. “After many years, what we want to do is to gradually reduce assignees [and] increase the local hires.”The Newcomer Training Center opened in 2021. The soaring demand, particularly for chips that power AI, has created a shortage of talent for the semiconductor industry. Countries compete for this talent.”TSMC’s Ho said a shortage of talent is one of the main challenges the company faces.
