The Supreme Court sided with the Biden administration on Monday, allowing federal officials to cut or remove parts of a concertina-wire barrier along the Mexican border that Texas erected to keep migrants from crossing into the state. The ruling, by a 5-to-4 vote, was a victory for the administration in the increasingly bitter dispute between the White House and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, an outspoken critic of President Biden’s border policy who has shipped busloads of migrants to northern cities. Since 2021, Mr. Abbott, a third-term Republican, has mounted a multibillion-dollar campaign to impose stringent measures at the border to deter migrants. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the court’s three liberal members to form a majority.

His spokesman said the absence of razor wire and other deterrents encourages migrants to risk unsafe crossings and makes the job of Texas border personnel more difficult. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesThe White House applauded the order, which was handed down after a federal appeals court last month had forced federal agents to stop cutting the concertina wire. Eagle Park has become one of the busiest spots on the southern U.S. border for migrants illegally crossing from Mexico. Abbott has said Texas won’t allow Border Patrol agents into Shelby Park anymore, having expressed frustration over what he says are migrants illegally entering through Eagle Pass and then federal agents loading them onto buses. Texas officials have argued that federal agents cut the wire to help groups crossing illegally through the river before taking them in for processing.

A closely-divided Supreme Court on Monday allowed Border Patrol agents to cut through or move razor wire Texas installed on the U.S.-Mexico border as part of an effort by the state to prevent illegal border crossings. The Biden administration says the wire prevents agents from reaching migrants who have already crossed over the border into the U.S.Texas Gov. Texas sued after Border Patrol agents cut through some of the razor wire, claiming the agents had trespassed and damaged state property. A federal judge ruled for the Biden administration, but the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. The Department of Homeland Security said Border Patrol agents were "physically barred" from entering the area during the incident.

We don't know what we want. The rails are too significant to ignore even as the bond market seems to rely, I would say, wrongly, on the broader data. Opinion: Our possibly short national nightmare

“My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over,” President Gerald Ford said. “Our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the Trump-Biden nightmare,” the former UN ambassador said. If not, it won’t be as protracted a “national nightmare” as the two-year-long Watergate scandal that put Gerald Ford in the Oval Office. Though, depending on your point of view, the real nightmare could begin after the swearing-in. Yet, John Avlon wrote, Trump and some members of the House GOP, want to tank an emerging compromise in the Senate that would couple border security measures with aid to Ukraine.

The Nasdaq, on the other hand, ended Friday at 15,310.97 — meaning it needs to rally about 5% more to take out its Nov. 19, 2021 record high. It is worth noting that the Nasdaq 100 , which is weighed more heavily in Big Tech, did close at another record high Friday. But the deal is already wobbling, as House Speaker Mike Johnson faces intense pressure from Trump and his House allies to demand more sweeping concessions from Democrats and the White House. “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people,” Trump posted on social media this week. During Iowa's Republican caucuses last week, which Trump won, immigration was a top issue. They argue that the changes would actually pave the way for Trump to implement his border agenda if he wins the election. UVALDE, Texas (AP) — Families of the children and teachers killed in the Uvalde, Texas, school massacre are renewing demands for criminal charges after a scathing Justice Department report again laid bare numerous failures by police during one of the deadliest classroom shootings in U.S. history. The Justice Department report says the FBI has assisted the Rangers but is not doing its own investigation. But she pushed back that timeline in December and said Thursday that she will need time to review the voluminous Justice Department report. Produced by a Justice Department office that supports local police, the document is among the most comprehensive accountings to date of what went wrong. The Department of Justice report faults state and local officials with undercutting the public's trust in law enforcement by repeatedly releasing false and misleading information about the police response.

Police responding to the Uvalde, Texas, shooting showed "no urgency," a DOJ report found. Uvalde school district officers arrived within three minutes of Ramos' arrival at the school and ran toward the classroom, but as they approached, Ramos fired from inside the classroom. Later that night, Justice Department officials privately briefed family members at a community center in Uvalde before the findings were made public. Greg Abbott initially praised the courage of officers' response and blame was later cast heavily on local authorities in Uvalde. The 376 officers at the scene included state police, Uvalde police, school officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents.

CHICAGO (AP) — As temperatures hover below freezing in Chicago, dozens of asylum-seekers are staying in the lower level of a library until the bitter cold gripping much of the country lifts. But after that, Chicago’s plans for offering immediate shelter to the growing number of migrants arriving in the nation’s third-largest city remain murky. Last week, it was parked city buses. “The city’s favorite word for everything is ‘temporary,’” said Vianney Marzullo, a volunteer who has helped migrants staying at O’Hare International Airport. 2023 wasn't a good year for the health-care sector, but some investors expect it to make a comeback this year — highlighting biotech and medical tech as areas to watch. But now, Citi believes that "astute investors may find themselves with a trove of rebound opportunities." Citi's top picks in biotech include Biomea Fusion , Alnylam Pharmaceuticals , and Immunovant . Jared Holz, health-care sector strategist at Mizuho Securities Americas, named biotech firm Biogen as one of his top trading ideas for 2024. Cramer lists his major themes for the market in 2024

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday reviewed what he thinks will be major themes on the market in 2024, including strength in the health-care sector due to weight loss drugs and success for mergers and acquisitions. With the major indexes declining on Wednesday, Cramer thought it would be helpful to tell investors what broader market themes they can reference on down days. And if you understand the themes behind them, you won't get shaken out by a bad tape—you'll use it to your advantage," Cramer said. He wondered whether other stocks would join the ranks of the "Magnificent Seven," but conceded that any contenders will be involved with artificial intelligence. "I'll have a lot more themes as the year goes on, because I'm not constrained by the calendar," he said.

By Daniel Wiessner(Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday said it would reconsider a recent decision requiring Texas to remove a 1,000-foot-long (305-meter) floating barrier it had placed in the Rio Grande river to deter migrants from illegally crossing the border with Mexico. That ruling was a setback for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, who has strongly criticized Democratic President Joe Biden's handling of record numbers of migrants crossing the border illegally. Abbott's office, the office of Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and the U.S. Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The floating barrier is part of Abbott's broader effort to deter and punish illegal border crossings, collectively known as Operation Lone Star. All of those initiatives have spawned court battles between Texas and the Biden administration and civil rights groups.

Christopher Abbott was about halfway through a performance of “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” when he felt something go wrong. The 37-year-old actor had been sitting onstage — his character, a brutish trucker, proposing marriage to a tormented woman played by Aubrey Plaza — and as he went to get up, he couldn’t straighten his leg. That early December injury — he had a bucket handle meniscus tear — was followed in short order by a case of Covid and arthroscopic surgery. And then he returned to the stage, performing for several weeks on crutches, through the end of the show’s 11-week run on Saturday night. The run, staged Off Broadway at the 295-seat Lucille Lortel Theater, was unusually bumpy.

After being postponed because of labor strikes in Hollywood, the Emmy Awards returned on Monday night and with the ceremony came what might be the television industry’s biggest fashion show. Though the carpet was gray, there was no shortage of red, a color that also proved quite popular at the Golden Globes this month. (Ms. Waterhouse’s sat beneath her baby bump.) The ceremony was honoring television programs broadcast last year, which gave viewers a chance to catch up with casts like that of “White Lotus” season two. Amid a carpet full of feathers, beads, sequins, diamonds and plenty of well-tailored suits, the following 15 outfits stood out from the rest (for better or worse).
