The government’s draft budget released Monday proposes spending just under 13.5 trillion rubles (over $145 billion) on national defense. The Ukraine war is Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II and has drained the resources of both sides, with Ukraine getting billions of dollars in help from its Western allies. Russian President Vladimir Putin is also looking at how to sustain his war effort as military spending has placed a huge strain on the Russian economy. Ukraine, too, has developed a new generation of drones for the battlefield and for long-range strikes deep inside Russia. More than 100 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russia on Sunday, Russian officials said.

And right now, the presidential campaigns’ dollars are talking about the “blue wall” — and about defining Kamala Harris. But there’s an equal amount of contrast spots, as well as positive ads telling the affirmative case for Harris. Pennsylvania is drawing far and away the most ad spending this month, from both parties. While Pennsylvania drew almost 20% of Democratic presidential ad spending and 11% of Republican spending over this period in 2020, it’s drawing more than a quarter of each party’s spending this year. Meanwhile, a longtime swing state, Iowa, has ceased to be a main battleground — with a resulting drop in ad spending.

Unless the economic outlook changes, mortgage rates may hold steady for the rest of 2024. If they were to weaken unexpectedly, that could spur the Fed to cut rates more aggressively, which in turn could push mortgage rates down further. 5-Year Mortgage Rate TrendsHere's how 30-year and 15-year mortgage rates have trended over the last five years, according to Freddie Mac data. Australia's inflation rate has come within the RBA's target range in the month of August, easing from 3.5% in July to 2.7%., according to a Wednesday release from the country's Bureau of Statistics. The drop puts the rate below the Reserve Bank of Australia's target range of 2%-3% for the first time since August 2021. He said that while the relief programs will bring headline inflation to the top of the RBA's target range, the RBA will be "looking through" these subsidies and focusing on core inflation. He writes, "the path of core inflation back to the target range has stalled somewhat, and it is hard to see a major improvement in the near term. We think the bank will need to see three more inflation prints before they are comfortable embarking on an easing cycle."

London CNN —A “misleading” online advertisement for $35 Nike sneakers has been banned in Britain for failing to make clear that the product was actually targeted at children and therefore the offer didn’t represent a true discount for adults. The ad appeared on the X account of The Sole Supplier, an online marketplace selling footwear and clothing from several major brands, in December 2023, the regulator said in its ruling Wednesday. Nike (NKE) said the ad was created and published by The Sole Supplier “without any (of its) input or oversight,” the ASA noted. The Sole Supplier, for its part, said it was open to considering how to display sizing information “more prominently” in future ads, the ASA said. The Sole Supplier did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
