LONDON — Barclays on Thursday reported second-quarter net profit attributable to shareholders of £1.2 billion ($1.54 billion), slightly lower than a year ago, as the British lender's net interest income fell. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected attributable net profit of £1.03 billion for the period, according to LSEG data, in a decline from the £1.3 billion logged in the second quarter of 2023. Barclays posted revenue of £6.3 billion for the latest quarter, above a forecast of £6.25 billion. Net interest income at it consumer bank dropped 4% year-on-year to £3.15 billion across the January-June period, as the lender's net interest margin declined from 3.2% to 3.15%. Lonely Guy genesBy removing prickles from various species, including roses and eggplants, the authors found that a LOG gene was responsible for the prickles in about 20 types of plants studied. LOG-related genes are found in all plants, even dating back to mosses, which are regarded as the first dry-land plant, Lippman said. “(LOG genes) have been repeatedly co-opted (a biological shift in a trait’s function) in different plant species for the formation of prickles, and also repeatedly lost in lineages where prickles are lost. For agricultural purposes, removing prickles could make harvesting easier and pave the way to get lesser-known produce into grocery stores.

Washington, D.C., Attorney General Brian Schwalb sued the online ticket exchange platform StubHub on Wednesday, alleging deceptive and unfair pricing. The lawsuit claims StubHub uses deceptive advertising of low ticket prices to lure consumers who pay vastly more after an arduous checkout process. "This is no accident — StubHub intentionally hides the true price to boost profits at its customers' expense," Schwalb said in a statement. In its lawsuit, the attorney general's office said that from 2014 to 2015, StubHub used "all-in pricing," in which the advertised price included mandatory fees. The complaint alleged that StubHub did a testing period where it randomly assigned consumers to one of the two models.

The court heard that seven of the illegal images were classified as category A, the most severe classification of indecent images of children under English law. The natural-parenting movement, like the anti-vaccine movement, relies on our forgetfulness about what life was like before the innovations that it denounces. Also like the anti-vaccine movement, the natural-parenting movement is a reaction to very real failures in our medical system, which has more than earned people’s distrust. Natural parenting has since been thoroughly secularized, but it still preaches something akin to spiritual transcendence through female sacrifice. Even if you distrust the natural-parenting movement, its pressures are hard to escape. If the natural-parenting movement really cared about children, it would do some introspection about how often it makes their parents miserable.

Qualcomm posted adjusted earnings of $2.33 per share on $9.39 billion in adjusted revenue. Arm forecast adjusted earnings ranging between 23 cents and 27 cents per share for the fiscal second quarter , while analysts called for 27 cents, per LSEG. The man accused of plotting the attacks of Sept. 11 and two of his accomplices have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in exchange for a life sentence rather than a death-penalty trial at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, prosecutors said Wednesday. A senior Pentagon official approved the deal for Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, according to Defense Department officials with knowledge of the agreement. The men have been in U.S. custody since 2003. But the case had become mired in more than a decade of pretrial proceedings that focused on the question of whether their torture in secret C.I.A. Word of the deal emerged in a letter from war court prosecutors to family members of victims of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
