The Protests in Bangladesh
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( The New York Times | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
For days, university students in Bangladesh have been locked in deadly clashes with the police and supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party, in which at least 17 people have been killed and more than 1,000 injured. Students have been demonstrating against a quota system for government jobs, which they consider unfair. On Thursday, protesters set fire to at least two government buildings in Dhaka, the capital, including Bangladesh’s national television station. Ms. Hasina’s government has deployed the police and paramilitary forces, including an antiterrorism unit, against the demonstrators. Students, armed mainly with sticks and bats, have fought the police and members of the student wing of the Awami League, Ms. Hasina’s party.

This Summer’s Sleeper TV Hit: ‘Your Honor’
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( John Koblin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Over a decade ago, “Breaking Bad,” the crime drama starring Bryan Cranston, catapulted from a basic cable show with so-so ratings to a big hit after Netflix started streaming it. And now the so-called Netflix effect is providing a boost, most unexpectedly, to “Your Honor,” another show starring Mr. Cranston — turning it into this year’s surprise summer TV hit. The series garnered more than a billion minutes of viewing time for three consecutive weeks, Nielsen said. (The “billion minute” mark is an unofficial Nielsen benchmark for a big hit.) According to preliminary Nielsen data, “Your Honor” will hit that milestone for a fourth consecutive week, and possibly a fifth too.

“This outage is historic in scale,” Mikko Hypponen, a research specialist at the software company WithSecure and a cybercrime adviser to Europol, told DealBook. It issued a software update that is causing Microsoft systems, including its Azure cloud service, to crash or not function properly. Long queues of airline passengers could be seen at airports around the world, with some resorting to manual check-in. In France, the television networks TF1 and Canal+ told the public on X that they could not go on the air on Friday morning. The incident points to how reliant the global economy is on a handful of major tech companies to run vital infrastructure.

A Trip Into Tornado Alley With America’s Most Obsessive Storm ChaserOn a clear morning in late May, Reed Timmer began the day at home in Lexington, Okla., studying the latest update from the National Weather Service’s storm-prediction center. A month into his freshman year, he went storm chasing, and saw his first tornado. He went on to begin his Ph.D. studies, but the allure of storm chasing waylaid his academic career. Timmer insists that chasing tornadoes is safe, though others’ experience suggests a different conclusion. In 2013, while he was pursuing the El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, four other chasers died in the storm.

CNN —Huge protests across Bangladesh escalated into deadly violence this week with clashes between students, pro-government supporters and armed police fueling widespread anger over civil service job quotas opponents say are discriminatory. Many Bangladeshi students are demanding an end to the government’s quota system, which reserves more than half of civil service posts for certain groups. In 2018, the quota system was scrapped following similar protests but in June the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal was unconstitutional. Critics and protesters say the quota system creates a two-tier Bangladesh where a politically connected elite benefit by their birth. “This is not just about quota protests anymore, this is much bigger than that, in simple quota protests the government wouldn’t go around hurting and shooting students.

Republicans used Wednesday night to introduce Vance and his life story to the nation. You owe President Trump answers!” Tennessee Sen. Energy security and energy policy are in the governor’s comfort zone and that was on full display Wednesday night. That's basically the pitch the management of Warner Bros. Discovery is floating to investors today, via a story in the Financial Times: "A dramatic plan to split its digital streaming and studio businesses from its legacy television networks." And would the money from those declining networks be enough to service all that debt? Apple, most notably, inquired about buying HBO way back when its parent company was called Time Warner. If WBD can't split the company the way it's supposedly proposing now, it will end up selling off assets (maybe CNN?

Bob Newhart Holds Up.
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Jason Zinoman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Bob Newhart, who died on Thursday at the age of 94, has been such a beloved giant of popular culture for so long that it’s easy to forget how unlikely it was that he became one of the founding fathers of stand-up comedy. Before basically inventing the hit stand-up special, with the 1960 Grammy-winning album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” — that doesn’t even count his pay-per-view event broadcast on Canadian television that some cite as the first filmed special — he was a soft-spoken accountant who had never done a set in a nightclub. That he made a classic with so little preparation is one of the great miracles in the history of comedy. A Roman Catholic from the west side of Chicago, Newhart came off as an entirely respectable example of Midwestern nice. Newhart brought his own kind of neurosis, a comedy rooted in nuanced deadpan and silence.

While the media and entertainment landscape around Netflix is in a state of change, the world's largest streamer is fine with the status quo. "Because when we delight people with our entertainment, Netflix can drive higher engagement, revenue and profit than the competition. This in turn creates a more loved and valued entertainment company — for our members, creators and shareholders — that we can strengthen and grow over time." But rather than worry about YouTube's competition, Netflix is content to focus on the other 80% of the TV market, the company reiterated. Netflix's focus remains building its advertising business and adding streaming subscribers on the back of its strength of content.

It's time to consider downside targets for A.I.-darling Nvidia. The first half of 2024 was all about stocks like Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) riding the A.I. On the short-term chart of NVDA, we can see a series of bearish engulfing patterns in mid-June and again in mid-July. And when the price returned to that price range earlier this month, we saw the same pattern of short-term distribution. This support level also lines up with a 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of the April to June rally phase, and also lines up with the 50-day moving average.

Bob Newhart, who burst onto the comedy scene in 1960 working a stammering Everyman character not unlike himself, then rode essentially that same character through a long, busy career that included two of television’s most memorable sitcoms, died on Thursday at his home in Los Angeles. Mr. Newhart wasn’t merely unknown a few months before his emergence as a full-fledged star; he was barely in the business, though he had aspirations. In 1959, some comic tapes he had made to amuse himself while working as an accountant in Chicago caught the ear of an executive at Warner Bros. Records, which in 1960 released the comedy album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart.”The record shot to No. 1 on the charts, and at the 1961 Grammy Awards it improbably captured the top prize, album of the year. How to trade Netflix using options ahead of earnings

Netflix earnings are out after the bell Thursday. Breaking down Netflix fundamentals Netflix faces much more competition in the streaming industry than it did a few years ago. These concerns were valid, given that Netflix had accumulated over $10 billion in negative cash flow in the decade leading up to the pandemic through December 2019. Over the four fiscal years from 2020 to 2023, Netflix reported over $10 billion in free cash flow, reversing the negative cash flow of the previous decade. These calls, 8% out of the money, traded for $9 each, representing just under 1.4% of the current stock price.
