Former Vice President Mike Pence at the US Capitol on May 16, 2024. This despite history suggesting that, at some point in their potential mandate, a possible President Trump might ask them to so something that tests their consciences, the law or the Constitution. The attractiveness of the vice presidential nomination may reflect Trump’s magnetism and the heady euphoria of being a key player in the “Make America Great Again” movement. He has also made clear to Trump that he wouldn’t have adopted Pence’s interpretation of the constitutional limits on vice presidential powers. Burgum has taken a classic route of parlaying an unsuccessful presidential campaign into a spot in the vice presidential derby.

To the Editor:Re “Trump Resisters Draft Playbook in Case He Wins” (front page, June 16):The resistance to a potential second Trump administration is crucial. The efforts outlined, from drafting lawsuits to stockpiling abortion medication, highlight the severe threat that Donald Trump poses to American democracy. The coalition of progressive activists and former Republicans preparing to resist him shows the widespread recognition of the danger he represents. The fact that we must prepare for the possible authoritarian actions of a former president shows how fragile our democracy is. The preparations being made are not just about opposing Mr. Trump; they are about defending the very principles upon which our nation was founded.

Obama enacted DACA; Trump tried to end itThe DACA policy was enacted after bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform efforts failed for the umpteenth time. Nearly 600,000 people have sought protected status under the program, which defers but does not necessarily end any immigration action against them. The Trump administration tried to end the DACA program in 2017, but the effort eventually failed at the Supreme Court in 2020. Instead, Trump hit pause on new applications, something the Biden administration then reversed. The much more modest bipartisan effort pushed by Biden earlier this year would not have helped the undocumented spouses of citizens and their children.

It has been especially effective in the "global South" of non-Western powers whose wealth and influence on world affairs is growing. China on Monday threatened to impose tariffs on pork imports from Europe, in what appeared to be retaliation for the European Union’s decision last week to impose preliminary tariffs on electric cars imported from China. China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that it had opened an investigation into whether pork from the European Union was being dumped in China at unfairly low prices. The case could result in tariffs on dozens of products, from pork chops to pickled pig intestines. The European Union had no immediate comment on the Chinese action. By choosing pork imports as the apparent payback for the electric vehicle tariffs, China is turning to a playbook it followed during its last major trade fight with the European Union over a decade ago.

On the leafy campus of a Dutch-speaking university, students have for months been demanding that their institution break ties with Israeli academia over the war in Gaza. Their campaign borrows extensively from the U.S. campus protest playbook. The students have set up an encampment. They have staged daily demonstrations. But in Belgium’s capital, the protest at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, or V.U.B., has been far more peaceful because of a unique combination of factors: a supportive political environment (Belgium is a vocal critic of Israel); a proactive rector; strict protest rules; and, crucially, a tiny campus Jewish community that has chosen not to confront protesters despite discomfort over some of the protests.

Slow-moving lawsuits intended to drain newsrooms of their limited financial resources and editorial bandwidth. Threats of jail time for journalists who expose political corruption and refuse to give up their sources and turn over their notes. If you think these things sound outlandish in America, take a close look at what’s happening here in Mississippi. Breaching the confidentiality of sources violates one of the most sacred trusts — and breaks one of the most vital tools — in investigative journalism. Even if we were to prevail in our defense of this suit, we will probably have lost in many other ways.

In the ocean, Underwater IoT could look like floating sensors, swarms of crewless vehicles, or a tetherless, wireless robot. Interest in ocean IoT is increasing because of its potential scientific, military, commercial, and conservation applications. AdvertisementWaleed Akbar, a research assistant at the MIT Media Lab, said that while developing underwater IoT is challenging, it's necessary. There's also the issue of energy consumption: Generally, preliminary underwater IoT devices have used batteries with limited capacity.

The official results from national elections last month just don’t add up for Mbalenhle Mthethwa, a loyal adherent of a new political party led by Jacob Zuma, South Africa’s former president. “The elections were not free and fair,” she said, echoing the stolen-election narrative advanced by Mr. Zuma. Ms. Mthethwa, a 38-year-old chef, lives in a township near the coastal city of Durban and has been out of work for the past four years. Mr. Zuma, 82, whose nine years as president were marred by allegations of corruption and looting of state coffers, has taken a page from the playbook of populist leaders of recent years — notably in the United States and Brazil. Vote-rigging claims in other nations have resulted in chaos, and South Africans will get a first look at how things might unfold on Friday, with Mr. Zuma’s party, uMkhonto weSizwe, known as M.K., vowing to boycott the first sitting of the newly elected Parliament.

Abercrombie & Fitch has transformed itself from a dying mall brand into a Wall Street darling after spending years revamping its product assortment, overhauling its supply chain and rebranding as an inclusive retailer. Shares of the apparel company have surged over the last year as it posted quarter after quarter of sales growth and profits that consistently topped Wall Street's expectations. Under the direction of CEO Fran Horowitz, Abercrombie has become one of the biggest winners in retail, but its turnaround was years in the making and far from an overnight success. Perhaps most importantly, Abercrombie rebranded itself into a more equitable retailer after it earned a reputation for racism, toxicity and exclusivity. To learn more about Abercrombie's comeback and what's ahead for the retailer after a year of meteoric growth, check out the video above.

On a recent afternoon in Kyiv, a professor of literature and a stand-up comedian got together to talk about Russian colonialism, a subject that has become a preoccupation among Ukrainian activists, cultural figures and bookstore owners. The moderator of the discussion, which was recorded for a new podcast for Ukraine’s national public broadcaster, was Mariam Naiem, a graphic designer and former philosophy student who has become an unlikely expert on the topic. “This war is just the continuation of centuries of Russian colonization,” said Ms. Naiem, 32, referring to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. “It’s the same playbook.”Russia’s long cultural and political domination of Ukraine, first through its empire and then the Soviet Union, had left an indelible mark, the podcast guests agreed, as they lamented being more fluent in Russian poems and films than in their own nation’s cultural treasures.

Adding to the concerns about supporters inciting or committing violence to avenge Trump are comments from Trump’s allies since the verdict. Will Trump’s smears of the verdict and his “breaking point” language escalate those threats and even potentially lead to violence from Trump’s supporters? One of Trump’s supporters who vowed to “not tolerate” the Mar-a-Lago search attacked an FBI field office, resulting in his death.
