Chevron likely won't see as large of gains as it did in 2022, Bank of America warned. Analyst Doug Leggate downgraded the stock to neutral from buy on Friday. The stock gained more than 50% in 2022 as energy prices soared following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Still, Leggate said Chevron leads oil producers in capital discipline and has been able to execute large-scale projects following the 2015 drop in oil prices. He also said the acquisition of Noble Energy would "add long life production with options built around regional exploration."
It was a sloppy start to the year for stocks, and the steep decline in two market darlings — Apple and Tesla — is not a good omen for the market in 2023. The S & P 500 was down as much as 1.2% on Tuesday and dipped below the key 3,800 level. "I think Apple has a major influence on market sentiment. Though, she added that Tesla is much less of an impact on overall market action than Apple because of the tech giant's huge market cap. Stockton also said the S & P 500 could break down several hundred points below that and reach 3,200.

MALE, Dec 26 (Reuters) - Former Maldives president Abdulla Yameen will appeal as soon as possible against his conviction and jailing for 11 years on corruption and money laundering charges, said his lawyer. Yameen, the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate for the next election due in 2023, was sent to a prison on Maafushi island on Sunday to start his sentence following the order from the Maldives criminal court. Former Maldives vice president Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, who is leading Yameen's legal team, said they will appeal against the criminal court's verdict without delay. Yameen, who lost power in 2018, will remain the party's presidential candidate for the 2023 election, it said. The PPM also alleged that India had "directly interfered" with the judicial process during the trial of Yameen.

Turnover surges as funds rush to exit private equity stakes

Conceived as an illiquid but lucrative method of accessing unlisted companies, private investments are typically structured into funds run by buyout firms. Investment firm Hamilton Lane says an unprecedented $224 billion in private equity stakes have been offered in the secondary market this year to mid-November. Others want to deploy their capital elsewhere - a sign that private equity funds are no longer so highly regarded. The need to sell to rebalance can occur when, as this year, private equity funds have outperformed public markets. On paper, plenty of private investments, which are typically valued quarterly, appear to have done very well this year.
In a second and separate settlement, Epic will pay $245 million as refunds to consumers who were allegedly harmed by user-interface design choices the FTC claimed were deceptive. That agreement is the largest administrative order in FTC history, the FTC added. The FTC’s complaint and proposed settlement dealing with children’s privacy was filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. In its blog post, Epic said it has agreed with the FTC to implement a feature that explicitly asks Fortnite users whether to save their payment information for future use. The FTC said that as part of its children’s privacy settlement, Epic may no longer enable text and voice chat by default for teenage Fortnite players or those under the age of 13.
Dr. Kate Padgett Walsh, a debt ethicist, said those people view fairness "too narrowly." President Joe Biden arrived at an answer at the end of August – he would cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for federal borrowers making under $125,000. "Our student debt relief program will help borrowers most at risk of delinquency or default from the pandemic get back on their feet," Education Secretary Miguel Cardona wrote on Twitter. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in August that Biden's plan to cancel student debt is "astonishingly unfair." "The financing of higher education is now so broken that we need to think about these questions of fairness and justice."

Stocks were battered in the past week, as investors reacted to a hawkish message from the Federal Reserve. In the past week, stocks rallied Tuesday after the consumer price index showed a smaller-than-expected increase of 7.1% for November. "There's a lot of housing data next week," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Financial. Ned Davis Research pointed out in a note this week that there has been a recent negative correlation between stocks and bonds, meaning stocks are falling and so are yields. Ned Davis expects the negative correlation to continue for the foreseeable future, and is watching the rolling one-year correlation between the S & P 500 and the 10-year Treasury yield.
Two teenage boys were left dangling in the air and had to be rescued after a bungee ride malfunctioned at London’s annual "Winter Wonderland” holiday event in Hyde Park. Kagame criticizes U.S. over 'Hotel Rwanda' figure's detention
  + stars: | 2022-12-14 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
WASHINGTON, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Wednesday criticized the United States over the concerns it has raised in the case of Paul Rusesabagina, a U.S. permanent resident jailed in Rwanda who was portrayed as a hero in the film "Hotel Rwanda." Kagame, who was in Washington for a U.S.-Africa summit, questioned why Rwanda should release Rusesabagina because he is famous and a permanent resident of the United States. When asked if he would meet with U.S. President Joe Biden, Kagame said he was not sure yet. The United States in May determined that Rusesabagina had been "wrongfully detained," citing a lack of fair trial guarantees during Rusesabagina's trial. Rusesabagina, who was feted around the world after being portrayed by actor Don Cheadle in the 2004 film "Hotel Rwanda," is a vocal critic of Kagame.

The loonie has weakened over 7% against the U.S. dollar since the start of 2022, with almost all of the decline coming since mid-August. Canada's economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.9% in the third quarter, much stronger than both analysts and the Bank of Canada were expecting. The BoC has raised its benchmark interest rate by 350 basis points since March to 3.75%, its highest level since 2008, in an attempt to cool inflation. Along with a more stable path for U.S. interest rates it "should help the loonie rally closer to fair value," Zhao-Murray said. Measures of fair value include purchasing power parity (PPP), or the exchange rate that equalizes the purchasing power of separate currencies.
