But US consumers aren’t only taking a financial hit from this summer’s extreme heat by way of their electricity bills. Shoppers could soon have to pay much higher prices for fruit and vegetables as farmers shoulder higher growing costs from the heat, a reversal of a trend seen over the past year with the cost of fruits and vegetables dropping by 1%, according to June Consumer Price Index data. For the rest of this summer, consumers aren’t likely to see markedly higher prices for seasonal fruits like blueberries because contracts with distributors and retailers tend to be worked out in advance, he said. Climate change, he said, is causing his business to suffer financially with reduced crop yields. However, the steep costs to make that switch could also contribute to higher prices consumers pay for produce.

Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty ImagesConsumers preparing to renew their homeowners insurance policy may experience some unexpected sticker shock. Between May 2022 and May 2023, home insurance prices rose an average of 21% at renewal time, according to Policygenius. A rise in catastrophic severe weather events contributed to this jump, experts say, and the rate of price increases is not expected to slow. Insurance companies "are not in the business of giving you money just because you need it, and they are not in the business of doing the right thing just because it feels like the right thing," Klein said. Fewer and pricier insurance options can prove to be a significant barrier to homeownership, experts say, as most mortgages require insurance.

Andrew Caballero-Reynolds | AFP | Getty ImagesFormer President Donald Trump will participate in an FBI victim interview about his attempted assassination at a campaign rally, the agency told reporters Monday. The interview with Trump "will be consistent with any other victim interview that we do," an FBI official said in a press call. Republican candidate Donald Trump was evacuated from the stage at today's rally after what sounded like shots rang out at the event in Pennsylvania, according to AFP. Law enforcement recovered two explosive devices from the trunk of Crooks' car near the site of the Trump rally, and another from his bedroom. On the afternoon of the rally, Crooks flew a drone near the event area for about 11 minutes.

Editor’s note: A version of this story appeared in CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors produced the first maps of the stars and practiced alchemy, the precursor to chemistry. But ancient alchemists actually developed technology and discovered chemical elements that are still widely used today. Now, a new discovery links both astronomy and alchemy in one intriguing figure who lived during the Renaissance. When they bought their organic vegetable farm in South Royalton, Vt., slung along the fertile floodplain of the White River, Ashley Loehr and Antoine Guerlain took comfort in the dense buffer of shrubs and trees that lay between their fields and the gently swirling water. It was 2021, a decade after the remnants of Hurricane Irene drove the river far over its banks, swamping the farm and wide swaths of the state. Determined to prevent another such disaster, the prior owner had proactively planted the trees, imagining a rising wall of woods that would at least make future flooding less grievous. There was no way to know if the barrier, 35 feet wide, would be enough — until last July, when another devastating storm surged across Vermont. The river gathered force and busted through, again overtaking fields and destroying crops.

People with dementia may need some extra care, but many still want to work and have social lives. Henriette Bringsjord's parents started Impulssenter, a farm where they can do just that. The farm acts as a sort of day care, providing relief to at-home caretakers. AdvertisementHenriette Bringsjord grew up on a farm outside Oslo and spent her childhood raising chickens, harvesting eggs, and feeding cows. But 20 years ago, after her parents noticed how hard it was for people with dementia to work a normal job and enjoy a normal social life, they repurposed the farm as a "care farm."

Work hours are more flexibleMany workplaces are flexible and allow employees to choose a schedule that fits their lifestyle. Some people, depending on the industry and their tenure at their job, can have up to 38 paid vacation days a year. For example, both parents are offered paid leave and they can decide when to use them in different amounts. If your kid is sick and you need to leave work to care for them, that is not just accepted but encouraged. In many cases, this can be considered a sick day for the parent as well and can be paid leave.

Boneless wings keep confusing dinersBreast meat is cheaper because chickens only have two wings. In 2023, a man sued Buffalo Wild Wings , claiming that the name of its boneless wings was misleading. Before it added boneless wings to its menu this year, Popeyes had considered alternative names, like "bites." 'Boneless wing is merely a description of the cooking style'Berkheimer said that he had cut the boneless wing into three pieces to eat, per court documents. CNN —An Ohio restaurant is not responsible for a customer’s injury after a bone was found in an order of boneless wings, a divided Ohio Supreme Court ruled Thursday, affirming an appellate court’s earlier decision. Berkheimer’s medical records said that a doctor found a “5cm-long chicken bone” lodged in his esophagus, according to court records. Berkheimer sued the restaurant, a food supplier, and a chicken farm in the Butler County Common Pleas Court in 2017. In 2023, Berkheimer appealed to the Supreme Court, which agreed to hear the case, the release said. On Thursday, the Ohio Supreme Court affirmed the dismissal of the lawsuit, saying the customer could have guarded against a piece of bone in his meal.

An unspoken question lingers on people's faces when they hear our family of five took a gap year to travel around South America. We budgeted about $12,000 for flights, estimating six one-way flights at about $2,000 each for our family of five. All told, we expected the trip to cost about $60,000, or less than a year of life at home in Chicagoland. We funded our trip by renting out our home in the Chicago suburbs, which covered our home upkeep and nearly 40% of our travel expenses. On the trip, we didn't know where we'd be in two months or how much money we'd bring in.

Hens blush when excited or scared, study finds

To understand how hens visibly express emotion, researchers spent four weeks on a French farm observing 17 hens of two different breeds, Bertin said, filming their routine behaviors and their reactions to different stimuli. Researchers observed 17 hens on a French farm. INRAE Arnould BertinTo make their more general conclusions, researchers extracted images from every two seconds of film and selected ones that featured the hen in profile to best study them. Although researchers weren’t able to explain the mechanism by which hens blush in this study, they concluded that the cheeks and ear lobes were more revealing of the birds’ emotions than their comb or wattles. Building on the results of this study, Bertin hopes to investigate whether these displays of emotion are linked to the hens’ social interactions, as well the implications for animal welfare.

Read previewAs a kid who dreamed of being a professional artist, I spent hours at an abandoned dairy farm near my childhood home. After the dairy farm burned down, it slowly faded from my memory. The practice of exploring abandoned spaces calmed the symptoms of what eventually became a cyclothymia diagnosis — a rare mood disorder — much later in life. As I got older and moved away, my childhood fascination with abandoned spaces almost vanished completely. I lay in bed, thinking about the abandoned dairy farm, and I wondered if there were any abandoned buildings near where I live in the Hudson Valley, New York.

“These pesticides are applied to tens of millions of farm fields across the United States in quite high quantities, and they are contributing to PFAS contamination,” Andrews said. “The study provides empirical evidence of the extent of PFAS in pesticides,” said DeWitt, who was not involved in the research. PFAS helps pesticides last longerThe study authors submitted Freedom of Information requests to various state and federal government agencies in the US, including the EPA. The analysis found eight EPA-approved inert ingredients were PFAS, including the nonstick chemical Teflon. In February, the EPA proposed the removal of Teflon in pesticide products.

The Country Where You Can Buy Meat Grown in a Lab

It was a remarkable moment in the annals of food, perhaps even humanity: A store in Singapore started selling lab-grown meat directly to the general public in May. “I like eating meat, and if I can do it without animal cruelty, it’s ideal,” he said. Others were not so enthused about meat cultivated in a lab. In recent years, Singapore has emerged as a hub for this utopian, or some might say, dystopian, future. It has looked at urban and vertical agriculture, approved insects for human consumption and given generous subsidies to cultivated meat startups.
