SYDNEY, Australia — Australia plans to set a minimum age limit for children to use social media citing concerns about mental and physical health, drawing a backlash from digital rights advocates who warn the measure could drive dangerous online activity underground. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his center-left government would run an age verification trial before introducing age minimum laws for social media this year. The law would put Australia among the first countries in the world to impose an age restriction on social media. Representatives of Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, which has a self-imposed minimum age of 13, YouTube owner Alphabet and TikTok were not immediately available for comment. Australia has one of the world’s most online populations with more than four-fifths of its 26 million people on social media, according to government and tech industry figures.

CNN —US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has called for “fundamental changes” to the way Israeli forces operate in the occupied West Bank after the killing of American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi at a protest last week. “No one, no one should be shot and killed for attending a protest. “Now we have the second American citizen killed at the hands of Israeli security forces. And we’ll be making that clear to the senior-most members of the Israeli government.”Blinken added that the United States had “long seen” reports of Israeli forces ignoring extremist settler violence against Palestinians and reports of excessive force by Israeli forces against Palestinians. The hearing focused in on nursing home deaths and a controversial March 2020 directive from the New York State Department of Health on hospital discharges and nursing home admissions. “You own this,” Republican Rep. Brad Wenstrup of Ohio, chairman of the subcommittee, told Cuomo at the outset of the hearing. The former governor has defended his handling of the pandemic, saying that the state followed federal guidelines. New York State Attorney General Letitia James issued a report in 2021 finding that the New York State Department of Health undercounted Covid-19 deaths among nursing home residents by approximately 50%. The New York health department undercounted the number of Covid-19 deaths in nursing homes by thousands during Cuomo’s time in office, an audit conducted by state officials found in 2022.

HAIKOU, CHINA - SEPTEMBER 08: Passengers wait in line to check in at Haikou Meilan International Airport on September 8, 2024 in Haikou, Hainan Province of China. (Photo by Luo Yunfei/China News Service/VCG via Getty Images)Chinese travelers are taking more last-minute trips as they become more cautious with spending amid a lackluster economic recovery. Travelers are planning trips closer to departure as they try to "take advantage of last-minute deals," economists at Oxford Economics told CNBC, noting a shift in consumer preferences where "modern travelers prefer spontaneity in their travel plans." Chinese consumers have become more frugal on everything, from groceries to travel, as the world's second-largest economy grapples with a protracted property crisis and high unemployment. "While people still want to go on holiday, sentiment regarding incomes and consumption remains low," according to economists at Oxford Economics.

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has spent the past couple decades warning the general public about ominous issues, from upcoming "climate disasters" to devastating cyberattacks. "A lot of unrest" in today's world could spark "a major war," he tells CNBC Make It. And even "if we avoid a big war ... then, yes, there will be another pandemic, most likely in the next 25 years." "The country that the world expected to lead and be the model fell short of those expectations," Gates says, referring to the United States. While some progress has been made, with increased spending on pandemic preparedness in the U.S. and elsewhere, Gates says the global response hasn't yet been enough.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

Last week, NFL team owners voted to allow an initial group of private equity firms to acquire up to a 10% stake of a franchise. "This isn't a case where private equity is going to come in and have influence on the franchise." Private equity has been eager to take stakes in sports as team valuations rise, mainly due to ballooning media rights deals. As investors, private equity firms often take management and board roles. Private equity investments typically have a set duration — it can range from three to seven years in many cases — and an expected return.

Multiple Secret Service officials have been put on leave for their actions leading up to and responding to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a source familiar with the decisions told NBC News. Those put on leave include the Secret Service’s special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office, whose office was responsible for coordinating the security plan with local law enforcement leading up to the rally. The source familiar with the decisions did not confirm the exact number of officials on leave and said the number may continue to grow as an internal investigation into the assassination attempt continues.
