“China calls on the international community, especially countries with influence, to play a constructive role for the peace and stability of the region,” the ministry added. The decision by Iran’s leaders to strike at Israel directly has pushed the shadow war between the two regional foes into the open. That’s why China does not condemn Iran,” said Yun Sun, director of the China program at the Washington-based Stimson Center think tank. Beijing meanwhile denounced the strike as a “barbarian act,” with protests erupting outside US diplomatic compounds across China. “For China, had US applies enough pressure on Israel, neither the Israeli attack nor the Iranian retaliation would have taken place.

A woman walks past Wells Fargo bank in New York City, U.S., March 17, 2020. Wells Fargo shares fell Friday after the bank reported first-quarter earnings that showed a decline in interest income. Wells said its net interest income decreased 8% in the quarter, due to the impact of higher interest rates on funding costs, including the impact of customer migration to higher yielding deposit products. "The investments we are making across the franchise contributed to higher revenue versus the fourth quarter as an increase in noninterest income more than offset an expected decline in net interest income," Scharf added. Shares of the bank climbed more than 15% year to date, beating the S&P 500's 9% return.

Housing gloomThe higher-for-longer inflation predicament has hit the U.S. housing market like a thunderbolt. More economists are paring their bets that the Fed will cut rates after the latest Consumer Price Index report. They all argue that sticky inflation will force the Fed to keep borrowing costs higher for longer. The country is growing faster than many peers, but voters are zeroing in on inflation to explain their disapproval of President Biden’s handling of the economy. (Some DealBook readers in recent days have emailed to say that they’re strongly feeling the pain of housing inflation.)

A hotter-than-expected inflation report has pushed back expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate cut. This means mortgage rates are likely to remain elevated for longer than many forecasters had anticipated. This would keep mortgage rates elevated throughout the summer homebuying season, when many home shoppers will be looking to get a mortgage. "March inflation figures were very bad, which also means bad news for interest rates," Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors, said in a blog post reacting to March's CPI data. This means your entire monthly mortgage payment, including taxes and insurance, shouldn't exceed 28% of your pre-tax monthly income.

The delegation will also arrive amid heightened global concern about North Korea, which has in recent months ramped up its bellicose rhetoric and continued its weapons testing. The trip could also be an important opportunity for the upper echelons of China’s political establishment to better understand the circumstances in North Korea today. Balance of powerChina has long walked a thin line in its relations with North Korea. To guard against stubborn inflation and higher-for-longer interest rates, investors should focus on quality companies with high pricing power and adjust their duration risk in bonds, according to Wall Street strategists and portfolio managers. Pricing power Companies with high pricing power tend to outperform when inflation is elevated because they have the ability to defend their profit margins by passing along higher costs to their end market customers. "In equities, you should prefer companies that have pricing power, i.e. "When inflation is the predominant risk in markets, correlations between stocks and traditional bonds tend to be high. BlackRock's iShares strategy team recently argued that investors should take advantage of spikes in bond yields while they can and reinvest their cash.

Steve Eisman of "The Big Short" fame has been bullish on infrastructure stocks after studying the industry for the past two years, and here are the companies he likes the most. The stocks Eisman passed up included residential solar companies, which already had a great run during the Covid-19 pandemic as major beneficiaries of zero interest rates. Feeling older than you are? It could be how you sleep
  + stars: | 2024-03-26 | by ( Sandee Lamotte | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Not getting enough sleep may cause you to feel five to 10 years older than you really are, according to two new studies. A lack of energy and motivation can certainly contribute to feeling older while limiting a person’s ability to remain physically and socially active, both of which contribute to feeling young, Balter said. For every night of poor sleep during that time, people reported feeling about a quarter of a year older than their chronological age. “These findings support that sleep, a vital biological phenomenon, might hold the key to feeling young,” Balter and her colleagues wrote in the study. “If you suspect that your sleep deprivation is due to a sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea, it’s crucial to seek evaluation and treatment from a healthcare professional,” he said.

Biden has a plan to make housing more affordable, but prices might be stuck in the stratosphere. "The effect on the housing affordability crisis is going to be muted. Some of Biden's housing affordability measures would fuel demand further at a time when supply is still historically tight, according to Lawrence Yun, the chief economist of NAR. But the problem with the housing market isn't really that there isn't enough money going toward housing. It's more the red tape and the local opposition that has been the biggest barrier to building housing," Fairweather said.
