It may seem like a lot, but my five bank accounts help me manage and organize my money. I have a checking account , an emergency fund savings account, a business checking account, a travel account, and an everyday savings account. When I first moved to New York, I already had three bank accounts, but I knew that I needed a local bank to receive my income and to have accessibility to funds. Figure out how I will get my moneyIn choosing my emergency fund savings account and my everyday savings account, I considered account accessibility. Look into specific accounts made for my needsSpecialty accounts are accounts built for a specific purpose, and I have two.

I get asked all the time about the possibility of a recession, and I'm telling everyone to prepare. To start, pay off high-interest debt, bulk up your rainy-day reserves, and don't sell your investments. As a financial planner, I often get asked when the next recession is coming. Pay off high-interest debt ASAPThe last thing you want to deal with during a recession is high-interest debt weighing you down. If you really want to take action before any future recession, I would recommend simply revisiting and rebalancing some of your investments.

Keeping too much in your checking account isn't ideal, for two reasons: First, such easy access means you might be tempted to spend it. Keeping too much in your checking account could mean that you're leaving money — even a little — on the table. After this account is built, it can be tempting to leave any spare cash in your checking account. If your checking account is growing while your IRA, 401(k), or savings account remains stagnant, you're probably keeping too much money in checking. You're worried you're missing out on moneyThe average checking account has an interest rate of 0.07%, according to the FDIC.

I've spent the majority of my life without a single penny in savings, but over the last few years, I've woken up and realized how ignorant I was to not take advantage of high-yield savings accounts. I didn't know much about saving moneyOnce I started educating myself about personal finance that I discovered high-yield savings accounts. Basically, high-yield savings accounts pay out a higher percentage than normal savings accounts by simply storing your money at a certain bank. I found a high-yield savings account that meets my needsThe first thing I did was start researching high-yield savings accounts to see who paid the most. All this required was a quick Google search for "best high-yield savings accounts."

Savers are now getting higher cash yields after several interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. "Everyone thinks it's kind of a free lunch," said Tommy Lucas, a certified financial planner and enrolled agent at Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo in Orlando, Florida. Falling into the regular tax brackets, ordinary income is less favorable than long-term capital gains. Similarly, taxable money market funds — which typically invest in shorter-term lower-credit-risk debt — and Treasury bills also trigger ordinary income. But Treasury bill earnings aren't subject to state or local taxes.

High-yield savings accounts, with easy access to your funds, are worth considering, said Ken Tumin, founder and editor at DepositAccounts.com. While investors expect the Federal Reserve to start cutting interest rates next year, online savings account rates won't fall significantly until the policy shifts, he added. Treasury billsAmid rising interest rates, Treasury bills have also become a competitive option for cash, with yields well above 5%, as of Aug. 18. Money market fundsAnother option to consider is short-term money market funds, said certified financial planner Chris Mellone, partner at VLP Financial Advisors in Vienna, Virginia. Money market mutual funds — which are different from money market deposit accounts — typically invest in shorter-term, lower-credit-risk debt, such as Treasury bills.

Our experts answer readers' investing questions and write unbiased product reviews (here's how we assess investing products). If you're worried about a recession, there are only two things you need: an emergency fund and diversified investments. The biggest danger to a young person isn't a risky portfolio or potential market drop, but avoiding investing. These "funds of funds" automatically choose a blend of investments based on your age — the younger you are, the riskier the investments (more stocks). At the end of the day, the "biggest danger" to a young person isn't a risky portfolio or potential market drop, he said, but avoiding investing all together.

Jean-Baptiste, who paid off over $100,000 of student loan debt, has seven bank accounts: one for each savings bucket in her budget. I actually have five accounts: checking, high-yield savings account, a travel account, a business account, and an account for a down payment on a home. A passive income stream can be a great way to generate extra money to pay down debt or save. Melissa Jean-Baptiste learned first-hand that passive income is not that "passive," especially in the beginning. Jean-Baptiste learned for herself that "creating a stream of passive income is hardly ever simple or passive." Although passive income is often not 100% passive, at least at first, the value of a side hustle or an additional income stream is undeniable. Jean-Baptiste writes, "the passive income I generated was critical in my debt-payoff journey because I could pay more towards my debt and it gave me more options."

For first-time investors, growing your money is about playing the long game, certified financial planner and senior financial advisor Matthew Saneholtz tells CNBC Make It. "It's not timing the market, but time in the market that is the most important thing," he says. Establish your 'time horizon'For new investors, the first thing to do is define your investing time horizon, Saneholtz says. It is the "single most important" factor to consider and should be determined before you put even a dollar into the market, Saneholtz says. "There are so many different variables for a single business to become profitable, stay profitable and achieve and win their industry."

REUTERS/Carlo Allegri/File PhotoNEW YORK, Aug 10 (Reuters) - When Valentina Valentini was putting together gift ideas for her wedding, the freelance journalist quickly realized that a traditional registry would not work. While asking for cash gifts makes financial sense, it is tricky. "Put a few traditional gifts on it, which they can purchase for you. PUT IT TO WORKWhatever does get donated to your down payment fund, it likely will not be enough to pull the trigger on a purchase right away. "This is a very practical idea for wedding gifts – and one that we have chosen for my sister-in-law's upcoming wedding."
