Opinion: Why I’m not going to have children
  + stars: | 2023-11-11 | by ( Opinion Anna Lee | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
But each day, the current state of the world dissuades me more and more from having children. Like many folks in Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012), my main concern is climate change. As environmental catastrophes reach a caliber we cannot predict or conceive, having children is becoming less of a risk I’m willing to take. Coupled with the resources and opportunities that the US provides, my hypothetical children likely wouldn’t be among the worst-affected by climate change. Under today’s environmental and political climate, I find it is better to regret not having children than regret having them.

Russia's stock market is seeing a streak of IPOs. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Russian IPO market is seeing a streak of firms go public, with vodka makers to gold miners to pawnshop operators selling shares for the first time. Most of the boom in the Russian stock market is being powered by retail traders, who have plowed cash into the Moscow Exchange. Western economists have cast doubt over the strength of Russia's stock market, given that foreign inflows and outflows within the Moscow Exchange are frozen.

After traveling around Israel and the West Bank, I now understand why so much has changed. It is crystal clear to me that Israel is in real danger — more danger than at any time since its War of Independence in 1948. Last Saturday night, a retired Israeli Army commander stopped by my hotel in Tel Aviv to share his perspective on the war. Consider this context: “According to Israel’s official Central Bureau of Statistics, at the end of 2021, 9.449 million people live in Israel (including Israelis in West Bank settlements), the Times of Israel reported last year. Let me not mince words, because the hour is dark and Israel, as I said, is in real danger.

To studio executives who negotiated with the SAG-AFTRA president, the former star of "The Nanny" prolonged a strike while she relished her high-profile role. As president of the 160,000-member SAG-AFTRA union, Drescher won widespread praise from performers for her tenacity in fighting for better wages and protections against the rising threat of artificial intelligence technology. Drescher framed her actions as part of a broader labor movement battling Corporate America, where, in her view, executives place Wall Street's approval and their own compensation ahead of the welfare of workers. Studio executives, who declined to criticize Drescher publicly to avoid inflaming labor talks, said the 66-year-old Drescher delivered similar unvarnished critiques to industry leaders during closed-door negotiations. "Her interest as the union president is to see all performers, from background to the top 2%, succeed in a vibrant industry for the next century and beyond."

It's "irresponsible" to talk of holding elections during wartime, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday, saying discussions around holding a vote in March 2024 were inappropriate when Ukraine is focused on fighting Russia's invasion. "We all understand that now, in wartime, when there are so many challenges, it is absolutely irresponsible to throw the topic of elections into society in a lighthearted and playful way," Zelenskyy said in his nightly address. There has been some talk around whether Ukraine, which is operating under martial law, should hold a presidential vote next spring. "I believe that now is not the right time for elections. So that there is no room left for conflicts and someone else's game against Ukraine."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Israel-Hamas war is distracting the world from the invasion of Ukraine. An international affairs expert told Insider Israel's war in Gaza may benefit Putin in several ways. "I think the advantage, if you to call it that, Russia has right now is that in the Middle East, they don't have to do anything. They can focus their attention on the most important challenge they face, which is the war in Ukraine," Walt told Insider.

LONDON (AP) — Four men were charged Monday over the theft of an 18-carat gold toilet from Blenheim Palace, the sprawling English country mansion where British wartime leader Winston Churchill was born. The toilet, valued at 4.8 million pounds ($5.95 million), was an artwork titled “America” and intended as a pointed satire about excessive wealth by Italian conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan. It was part of an art installation at Blenheim Palace, near the city of Oxford, a few days before it vanished overnight in September 2019. The Crown Prosecution Service said Monday it has authorized criminal charges against four men, ages 35-39, over the theft. The golden toilet was fully functioning, and prior to the theft, visitors to the exhibition could book a three-minute appointment to use it.

Asked when the Biden administration might feel compelled to call for a ceasefire – something it has so far declined to do – the senior administration official said that given the scale and nature of Hamas’ attacks on Israel on October 7, a ceasefire was not appropriate. “A terrorist group takes 200 hostages and kills 1,400 people and is hiding under tunnels, including the leaders – ceasefire is not really the word … to use,” the official told CNN. Neither he nor anyone in his administration has come close to criticizing how Israel is conducting its offensive. “I understand the emotion,” Biden said as he continued his remarks after the protester was led out of the room. The official said Friday that there is “just as intense a process ongoing” to secure the safe release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

KYIV, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is weighing the pros and cons of a spring 2024 presidential vote, his foreign minister said on Friday, though there are major concerns over how to organise a free and fair vote during war with Russia. Ukraine was scheduled to hold a parliamentary election in October and a presidential vote in March 2024. Kuleba made his comment during an online appearance at the World Policy Conference in the United Arab Emirates when asked whether Ukraine would hold a presidential election in spring. Zelenskiy has said he wants to run for another term if an election happens. Opponents of holding a vote fear Russia would try to derail it while political jockeying would undermine national unity.

A North Korean military commentator said despite the failure of the test, the presence of South Korean "puppet military gangsters" showed that U.S. nuclear weapons were targeted at North Korea. The commentary also criticised the U.S. and South Korea for various recent military steps including the deployment of U.S. nuclear strategic bombers to South Korea. The U.S. and South Korea also held air exercises involving 130 warplanes from both countries to simulate 24-hour wartime operations last month. South Korea and the United States say their exercises are aimed at maintaining combat readiness to respond to North Korea. It has been 26 days since Hamas launched its attacks on Israel. But like any tool, international law has limitations as well as strengths. I’m going to dig into those by trying to answer some of the broad questions I’ve heard from readers and other commentators. The laws of war are not designed to outlaw fighting completely, or even to ban all killings of civilians. In practical terms, as sad as it is, that means that acts of war can be horrifying without necessarily being illegal.
