Senator Joe Manchin III said he decided to forgo re-election because he’d accomplished all his goals. But for the Democrats he’s leaving behind in Washington, the work to hold the party’s already slim Senate majority is just beginning. The state has become so conservative that only Wyoming delivered a wider Republican margin in the 2020 presidential race. “This is a huge impact,” Ward Baker, a former executive director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the group that oversees Senate races. “Manchin not running will save Republicans a ton of money — and it takes a seat off the board early.”

That’s why we’re slowly closing in on them,” the Israeli military spokesman, Richard Hecht, told reporters on Friday night. The situation could not be immediately confirmed, though the Israeli military has made clear that its troops are fighting in the heart of Gaza City. “If conditions were better than this, we could have saved their lives,” Dr. Abu Salmiya said. “At this point, there’s just so little we can do for the wounded we receive, only the bare minimum,” said Dr. Abu Salmiya. Dr. Abu Salmiya said international organizations were welcome to investigate the site and see if they could find any evidence of Hamas’s presence there.

West Ham lost 2-1 away to the Greek side a fortnight ago but their win at the London Stadium put them level on nine points with second-placed Freiburg, who crushed bottom side Backa Topola 5-0. "If I was being honest, I don’t think we made enough chances or opportunities and I need to look to see why that was the case," West Ham manager David Moyes said. The West Ham fans then held their breath late on as the visitors nearly equalised when Mady Camara's close-range header struck the post when he should have scored. Marseille secured a second victory with their win in Athens thanks to goals from Chancel Mbemba and Ismaila Sarr. Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

But as an American business leader condemning Hamas’s attacks, he said, he felt surprisingly lonely. “I was disappointed that fewer leaders than I anticipated spoke out emphatically, clearly and with moral clarity on this issue,” Mr. Karp said. Some business leaders made donations to humanitarian organizations and pointed their employees to company-sponsored mental health resources. “No company does business in Gaza — as opposed to, say, in Russia, where there are 1,500 major companies doing business,” he said, comparing this war with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “The dynamics in the Middle East have always been difficult and complex,” he wrote.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Voters in Virginia's capital city are deciding Tuesday whether developers can move forward with a proposed $562 million resort casino along Interstate 95. A ballot measure on whether to allow the gambling and entertainment complex is before Richmond voters for a second time, after the city narrowly rejected the proposal two years ago. Many of the anti-casino signs that dotted the city in recent weeks have emphasized the fact that the city already said “no” once before. Boosters estimate the casino will deliver 1,300 permanent jobs, and developers are promising big financial benefits. An agreement with the city calls for a one-time upfront $25.5 million payment if the referendum passes, with another $1 million after financing closes.

TOKYO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Tokyo residents dashed for cover inside a train station on Monday as part of the first missile evacuation drill in the capital for years as Japan frets over the growing threat from nearby North Korea. Japan has held more than a dozen such drills nationwide this year, though Monday's drill was the first in Tokyo since 2018. The participants, wearing bibs, were divided into groups at a train station and a park. When the test missile alert was sounded, police and disaster prevention officials with loudspeakers hurried the groups to designated shelter areas where they crouched down with their hands over their heads. A few dozen anti-war demonstrators gathered in front of the train station where the drill took place, chanting and holding signs that read "Missile drill is preparation for war" and "Diplomatic dialogue instead of missile drills".

The University of Michigan moved to ward off possible discipline by the Big Ten Conference against the Wolverines’ football program and head coach Jim Harbaugh in the wake of allegations that the team engaged in illegal sign-stealing. In an email to the Big Ten late last week, Michigan president Santa Ono warned that taking action before conducting an investigation would violate conference rules. The move escalates the battle between Michigan, a national-title contender ranked No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings, and its opponents, who are clamoring for a quick punishment of alleged activities they say have given the Wolverines a competitive advantage.

On Tuesday afternoon at a courthouse in Kansas City, Missouri, the collective nightmare of the real-estate industry became reality. For decades, the basic structure of how real-estate agents get paid when they help someone buy or sell their home has remained roughly the same. Here's how it works: When you list your home for sale on an MLS, you're required to offer a commission to the buyer's agent. The good buyer's agents who can prove their value will be fine, Brobeck predicted. Buyers might also start making offers on the condition that the seller agrees to pay both agents' commissions — otherwise, no deal.

CNN —If you don’t realize how powerful White Christian evangelicals have become, consider this:A White Christian evangelical, who has been described as “the embodiment of White Christian nationalism in a tailored suit,” is now second in line to the presidency. White evangelical Protestants make up only about 14% of Americans, and that number has been steadily shrinking. The media tends to depict White evangelicals as foaming-at-the-mouth Christian insurrectionists like some of those who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. QUILLOTA, Chile, Nov 3 (Reuters) - The Pan American Games show jumping competition ended in chaos on Friday, with Canada arguing a judging error had denied Amy Millar a place on the podium, triggering protests and appeals. Video showed that the barrier did drop but the Canadian protest argued it did so after Millar had crossed the finish line and completed her round. The U.S. later filed a counter appeal and could be seen engaged in an animated conversation with the Canadian team outside of the judges' meeting. "We just went all together, including the Canadian team, to watch the video, the video clearly shows she touched the fence," Ward, a five-time Olympian and double gold medallist told Reuters. Ward had no problem with Canada filing a protest but was happy officials made the decision they did.

The government’s October jobs report is expected to show Friday that companies and government agencies added 184,000 jobs, a solid showing, though down sharply from a blockbuster 336,000 gain in September. The Fed scrutinizes the monthly job data to assess whether employers are still hiring and raising pay aggressively as a result of labor shortages. The Fed's policymakers are trying to calibrate their key interest rate to simultaneously cool inflation, support job growth and ward off a recession. At the same time, inflationary pressures have been easing as the Fed has sharply raised borrowing costs. In the meantime, despite long-standing predictions by economists that the Fed's ever-higher interest rates would trigger a recession, the U.S. economy, the world’s largest, remains sturdy.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

SANTIAGO, Nov 1 (Reuters) - It was a deja vu double celebration for Chile at the Pan American Games on Wednesday as Martina Weil powered to women's 400 metre gold and the men's soccer team took a 1-0 win from the United States. The gold on back-to-back nights at the Estadio Nacional, where the 1962 World Cup final was played, were joyous achievements but it is a double opportunity at soccer gold that really has Chilean hearts pounding. The Chilean men have never won Pan Am Games gold and only once before, in 1987, appeared in the final losing to Brazil while the women have never before got to the semi-finals. Andrea Vargas gave Costa Rica their first gold of the Games successfully defending her 2019 Pan Am title in the 100m hurdles while Brazil's Eduardo Rodrigues won the men's. Led by double Olympic champion McLain Ward the U.S. won the equestrian team jumping gold ahead of Canada and Brazil.

Día de los Muertos is a tribute to the afterlife, a day meant to honor those who have died and keep their memory alive. Unlike Halloween, which historically was a day to ward off evil spirits, Day of the Dead is more about paying respects to loved ones who have died. Just like in Mexico, Filipinos visit their loved ones’ graves and also create altars to those who have passed. Many people honor Day of the Dead by visiting the graves of dead relatives and loved ones. People come together to share stories of their loved ones — helping keep their memory alive.

It seemed obvious to me that some townspeople would have collaborated out of fear or the need to survive. (I could not reach any of the accused collaborators from Bilozerka or Volodymyr Saldo.) A researcher with a nonprofit government watchdog group in Bilozerka, Zelinska investigated Kozlyonkova for misusing state funds before the war. As far as I could determine, none of the accused collaborators had. The administrators of the partisan forums clearly wanted to raise suspicion — to let accused collaborators know that they were being monitored, too.

CHICAGO (AP) — As the first blast of wintry weather hit Chicago, dozens of migrant families without a place to live were moved off snowy city streets and into the basement of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in a nearby suburb. The last-minute, temporary solution around 1 a.m. Wednesday, coordinated by volunteers and suburban Oak Park officials, came as Chicago has struggled to house the growing population of asylum-seekers ahead of the deep winter months. City officials have been scouting locations for winterized tents, but City Council members have criticized Johnson's administration for a lack of details. This week, the city publicized its winter efforts, including providing 16 “warming buses” at police stations during overnight hours, and winter coats for new arrivals. Last month, the city touted its partnerships with several outside organizations to provide food, clothing and hygiene items.

REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - China and the United States will discuss nuclear arms control next week, the first such talks since the Obama administration, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. Those arms talks would be led on Monday by Mallory Stewart, a senior State Department official, and Sun Xiaobo, the head of the arms-control department at China's Foreign Ministry, the Wall Street Journal report said. Since then, U.S. officials had expressed frustration that China showed little interest in discussing steps to reduce nuclear weapons risks. Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Washington-based Arms Control Association, said the overdue arms talks would likely focus on promoting greater transparency of each countries' nuclear doctrines and more effective crisis-communication channels.
