In a world that seems consumed by the trials of capitalism and the unyielding pressure to work, Robin Leach, the British television personality who died in 2018, noted one place that did it differently: In Italy, Mr. Leach said, they add work and life onto food and wine. Luciano Fregonese, the mayor of Valdobbiadene — a rural town of 10,000 people in Italy’s picturesque northeast, famous for its Prosecco — has lived such truths. “It’s not easy, because every weekend there is one or two or three or maybe more events to attend to, and every event it is common to drink wine, or Prosecco, and also to eat,” the mayor said in an interview, with the help of a translator. “It’s not easy to say ‘no.’”

Villepinte, France AP —Imane Khelif of Algeria won her opening Olympic boxing bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds. Carini and Khelif exchanged only a few punches before Carini walked away and abandoned the bout — an extremely unusual occurrence in Olympic boxing. They were allowed to compete in Paris by the IOC task force, which has run the past two Olympic boxing tournaments. Olympic boxing reached gender parity for the first time this year, with 124 men and 124 women competing in Paris. We ended up in the medieval town of Loches due to a recommendation from a local. One of my favorite examples of this approach was when my husband and I took a road trip from Paris to Andorra with our son. In Paris, someone from the car hire company recommended we visit Loches, a medieval town in the Loire Valley. The next day, we asked a server where she'd recommend staying within three or four hours south of where we were. We absolutely loved walking through the cobblestone streets, exploring its religious sites, and listening to the church bells in the morning.

Israeli athletes who had already been moving around the Paris Games with a security apparatus befitting a head of state can expect heightened protection after the recent assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders caused security officials to fear for the athletes’ safety. On Saturday, a rocket from Lebanon hit a soccer field in Majdal Shams, an Arab Druse village in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. Israel blamed the deadly rocket attack on Hezbollah, which denied responsibility. On Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike killed a Hezbollah commander near Beirut, the Lebanese capital, in retaliation. Before traveling to Paris, Israeli athletes reported receiving anonymous emails that threatened, “we intend to repeat the events of Munich 1972.”

When Nemour performed it in competition in June, it produced the highest score recorded on the bars since the Tokyo Olympics. But while she may wow fans in her home country at these Games, she won’t be doing it under the French flag. Nemour’s father had an Algerian passport because his parents had been born in the country, and Nemour was entitled to one as well. At the world championships in 2023, Nemour won the silver medal on the uneven bars. She didn’t realize what the result meant for African gymnastics, she said, until she started receiving a deluge of messages and interview requests.

Now that she has mastered it, the uneven bars routine that the gymnast Kaylia Nemour has prepared for the Paris Olympics is a sight to behold: a fluid yet treacherous 30 seconds, so tightly woven with difficulty that it has made her a medal favorite in the event. When Nemour performed it in competition last month, it produced the highest score recorded on the bars since the Tokyo Olympics. But while she may wow fans in her home country at these Games, she won’t be doing it under the French flag. Instead, Nemour, 17, is competing for Algeria, the result of a nationality switch last year that followed a protracted dispute with the French gymnastics federation — one that has seen the host nation lose out on perhaps its best chance for a medal on one of the most high-profile stages of the Games. The conflict that drove a wedge between Nemour and the French federation began with a power struggle over training sites ahead of the Games but has since devolved into accusations of overtraining, caustic exchanges and an 18-month administrative inquiry that concluded last December that the federation was “hounding” Nemour’s home gym in Avoine, a village in western France.

Model Bella Hadid issued a statement after starring in a controversial Adidas campaign that the sportswear company said had an "unintentional" connection to a bloody terrorist attack. The ad campaign for Adidas' new retro trainers, called the SL72s, was a nod to the 1972 Munich Olympics. Released earlier in July, the advertisement featured Hadid holding a bouquet of flowers while wearing the shoes, which originally debuted in 1972 for the Munich Olympics. Hadid said she was not aware of the connection to the historical events of the 1972 Munich Olympics, and that she would not have taken part in the campaign had she known.
