Donald Trump, in his trademark blue suit and red tie, strides across the frame in broad daylight, while Musk, in a black cap and T-shirt, cuts a gleefully diabolical figure. Whatever archetype actually describes Musk’s relationship to Trump — minion, sidekick, wartime consigliere, “first buddy” — there is no question that he radiates supervillain energy. In his own way, Trump does too. To observe that Trump’s opponents and Musk’s critics see them as villains would hardly count as much of an insight. Up there, where the snowpack of collective dreaming melts into the watersheds of commercial storytelling, the villains have been in the ascendant for quite a while.

London's historic art scene is getting a tech upgrade
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
The United Kingdom's historic art scene has embraced technology such as artificial intelligence, as it evolves to compete with growing markets such as China. While the United States and China hold the number one and two spots respectively, the U.K.'s contribution to the art market is nothing to be sniffed at – holding 17% of the global share, according to the Art Basel and UBS Art Market Report. London is widely regarded as the art hub of Europe, and its biggest art fair, Frieze, boasted 90,000 visitors in 2024. Within the art world, it's been sort of bubbling away, burning away for a while, and it's suddenly caught fire," said Henry Highley, Head of European Private Sales for Phillips. Neighbors breathed a sigh of relief this week when an empty shipping container appeared outside the dilapidated red house in Massapequa Park that has become known as the home of the accused Long Island serial killer. “The best thing that could happen is they knock that house down and build a brand-new one so that the memory of all this is obliterated,” said a neighbor, Albert Cella, 80. “All this” referred to the sensation caused by the arrest last year of Rex Heuermann, 61, who prosecutors say presented himself as a family man in the little red house all while committing the Gilgo Beach murders. With Mr. Heuermann in jail awaiting trial after pleading not guilty, and his wife, Asa Ellerup, being paid to participate in a documentary series, the family is moving out. Ms. Ellerup and the couple’s two adult children are relocating to a South Carolina property purchased years ago as a retirement home, and she will put the Long Island home up for sale after her divorce from Mr. Heuermann becomes final in about six months, their lawyers said.

President-elect Donald J. Trump repeatedly promised voters that he would cut energy and electricity prices in half within 18 months of taking office. The emerging plan is a repackaging of Mr. Trump’s energy policy. Advisers think Mr. Trump can lower prices by boosting oil and gas production, which is already at record levels in the United States. But energy industry experts noted that a president has limited tools to influence how much Americans pay at the pump, and even less leverage when it comes to electricity prices. More than a dozen experts said Mr. Trump’s strategy might succeed in lowering prices, but not enough to meet his goal.

CNN —At least 11 people have been killed and several others injured after an Israeli strike flattened a multi-story residential building in central Beirut overnight, Lebanese officials said. At least 23 other people were injured in the strike, according to a toll provided by Lebanon’s Civil Defense. Saturday’s attack marks the latest in a string of Israeli strikes on central Beirut in recent weeks, following the killing of a Hezbollah spokesperson in an airstrike last Sunday. Most Israeli airstrikes have targeted the Lebanese militant group’s stronghold in Beirut’s southern suburbs since hostilities ramped up early last month. On Friday, the director general of Dar Al Amal University Hospital near Baalbek in eastern Lebanon was killed along with six of his colleagues in an alleged Israeli strike, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

Mexico gained tens of thousands of jobs when U.S. and foreign automakers moved their plants to Mexico under the free trade pact to take advantage of much lower wages. But the idea that Chinese parts — or even whole cars — could be piggybacking on that arrangement to further hollow out the U.S. auto industry has enraged some people north of the border. Mexico hopes the rules of the agreement would prevent the U.S. or Canada from simply walking away when the trade pact comes up for review in 2026. Mexican officials say they have fewer imports of Chinese parts and products than the United States does. In the end, Mexico may be forced to crack down on Chinese imports, but it won't be easy.

For months, European business leaders have watched as Donald J. Trump paved a path back to the White House by doubling down on an “America First” economic policy, putting protectionism and business-friendly tax and regulatory pledges high on the agenda. With the U.S. presidential inauguration less than two months away, they are now furiously lobbying policymakers in Brussels with an appeal of their own: Put Europe First. Nothing has galvanized the European business community quite as urgently as the prospect of a second Trump presidency, this time with Mr. Trump wielding bolder promises to disrupt the global economic order in ways that threaten to leave Europe lagging even further behind. At a business conference in Paris this week, hundreds of corporate chiefs and lobby groups from France, Germany and Italy gathered to discuss just that. They described Mr. Trump’s election as a “wake-up call” for Europe to get its house in order — or face a painful economic fallout.

In a year of landmark elections, my country’s presidential vote last month flew under the radar. And perhaps with good reason: Uruguay’s balloting was marked by unexciting candidates and their lackluster attempts to entice undecided voters to the polls. An uneventful vote seems preferable to the deep polarization that has surrounded presidential elections over the past year in countries like El Salvador, Argentina, Venezuela and even the United States. And young Uruguayans are afflicted by many problems. As it did in other countries, the Covid-19 pandemic left Uruguay in the grip of a mental-health crisis that hit this group hard.

Opinion | Three Theories of the Trump Cabinet
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It did seem, at least, that the appointments to Trump’s cabinet might help us make plausible statements about the trajectory of his administration. That Trump has picked more loyalists than last time is true, inevitable and not especially useful in terms of figuring out how exactly (apart from never appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the boss!) That some of his nominees are eccentric or unfit-seeming and others are more conventional is likewise to be expected. Neither observation gives us a general theory of Trump 2.0. Instead, let’s consider three subtheories of how this cabinet might actually work.

This week, Vanity Fair published a bombshell article revealing that Cormac McCarthy, one of the country’s most celebrated and enigmatic novelists, had a relationship with a girl he met when he was 42 and she was 16, a foster child who felt so unsafe at home she often carried a gun and used the pool area at the motel where he was staying to shower. The revelations in the article stunned many fans of the famously inscrutable author, but did not come as a surprise to close friends of McCarthy’s or the tight-knit community of scholars who have studied his life and work. McCarthy’s relationship with Augusta Britt lasted nearly until his death in 2023, and came up in his letters over the years. Dianne C. Luce, who has written several books about McCarthy, said she and another McCarthy scholar, Edwin T. Arnold, learned about McCarthy’s relationship with Britt around 40 years ago, during an interview with a friend of McCarthy’s. Over the years, she saw the relationship come up in the author’s letters to his literary friends, among them Robert Coles, Guy Davenport and Mark Morrow.

Others said they took Social Security too early or retired without a long-term financial plan. Some older Americans wish they'd had more investing knowledgeA major theme among BI's survey respondents was that they lacked knowledge about investing. She also didn't realize that because she has a pension in addition to receiving Social Security when she retires, she would be affected by a little-known Social Security provision that would lower her monthly check.
