CNN —The Israeli military said Monday that Omer Maxim Neutra, an American-Israeli citizen who was previously believed to be alive and held hostage in Gaza, was killed during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. Neutra, 21, served as a tank platoon commander in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the time of the attack, the IDF said, adding that Neutra’s body is still being held hostage in Gaza. In previous cases when a hostage was declared dead, the finding was based on new intelligence and evidence. We consider it a missed opportunity.”Neutra was one of seven American citizens held in Gaza. According to Israeli authorities, Hamas is holding 101 hostages in Gaza – 97 taken on October 7, 2023 and four others who were kidnapped before that.

China bonds rallied Monday with the 10-year yield dropping below the key psychological level of 2% to hit a multi-decade low, amid expectations that Beijing could expand its stimulus measures to shore up the economy. Yields on China's 10-year government bond, which move inversely to prices, fell to 1.9636% on Monday, data from LSEG showed, marking its lowest level in 22 years. 30-year bond yields dropped to 2.164%. "The resistance for further downside [on bond yields] may increase due to higher government bond issuance and upcoming major meetings," OCBC's Xie noted. THESSALONIKI, Greece AP —The metro system in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki opened Saturday featuring driverless trains, and tens of thousands of people braved blustery, rainy weather to wait outside the stations to try them out. The single 13-station subway line was jammed with passengers eager to get a taste of the city’s new transport system. This archaeological site is located inside the Venizelou metro station in Thessaloniki. Deep underground, remains of the city’s busiest street in the 6th century were found. But it will likely take several more years for the metro to reach the city’s busy Macedonia Airport.

AdvertisementNew York City is on the verge of legalizing accessory dwelling units in much of the city. The effort is part of the mayor's "City of Yes" housing plan, designed to boost the supply of homes. More than a dozen states across the country have legalized ADUs in recent years, and New York State greenlit the secondary units in 2022, although New York City has restricted them. Last year, New York City rolled out a pilot program that awarded 15 homeowners with up to nearly $400,000 in funding per household to build an extra dwelling in their backyard, basement, or attic. Another Republican council member opposed to City of Yes derided ADUs as backyard "treehouses" that would depress home values.

Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store gives a speech during the Autumn 2024 conference of Equinor, a Norwegian multinational energy company, in Oslo, Norway on November 26, 2024. Norway has shelved plans to open a vast ocean area at the bottom of the Arctic for commercial-scale deep-sea mining. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre described the move as a "postponement," Reuters reported Sunday, citing comments delivered to private broadcaster TV2. Støre leads Norway's center-left Labor Party, which is the senior party in a minority government coalition with the Center Party. The practice of deep-sea mining involves using heavy machinery to remove minerals and metals — such as cobalt, nickel, copper and manganese — from the seabed, where they build up as potato-sized nodules.

Opinion | How Do You Like That Filibuster Now?
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Michelle Cottle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As Republicans prepare to take control of both chambers of Congress and the presidency, Senator Joe Manchin, the conservative West Virginia Democrat turned independent, has a question for his former Democratic teammates: “How do you like that filibuster now?”Mr. Manchin is feeling sassy these days. His ex-party just got its clock cleaned and is facing two years, minimum, in the political wilderness. And, no surprise, as Mr. Manchin prepares to retire in January, he has plenty of thoughts on preserving the Senate’s role as an independent power center — a mission that feels especially vital with Donald Trump’s return to Washington. Love him or loath him, Mr. Manchin is worth a listen as a man who understands how to use power whether you’re in the minority or the majority in the Senate. And at age 77, with more than four decades in politics, he takes the long view — a healthy mind-set for discouraged Democrats.

Opinion | The Surprising Allure of Ignorance
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Mark Lilla | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Our own experience teaches us that all human beings also want not to know, sometimes fiercely so. Others think instead that they have a special access to truth that exempts them from questioning, like a draft deferment. Mesmerized crowds follow preposterous prophets, irrational rumors trigger fanatical acts and magical thinking crowds out common sense and expertise. It is always possible to find proximate historical causes of these upsurges in the irrational — war, economic collapse, social change. The experience of disenchantment is as painful as it is common, and it is not surprising that a verse from an otherwise forgotten English poem became a common proverb: Ignorance is bliss.

CNN —Five people have been reported missing from a fishing boat that capsized in rough waters off the coast of southeastern Alaska, officials said. The US Coast Guard received a mayday call at 12:10 a.m. Sunday from the crew aboard the 50-foot-long vessel, saying it was overturning, the guard said in a news release. The Coast Guard asked for additional information but received no response, the release said. The ferry vessel AMHS Hubbard overheard an urgent broadcast from the Coast Guard and arrived on the scene first, officials said. Temperatures will warm above freezing on Monday so the heavy snowfall will transition to a rain and snow mix before becoming all rainfall by Tuesday.

An illegal hit on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence led the player to be carted off the field, sparked an ejection as well as a confrontation between Jacksonville and Houston Texans players on Sunday. Lawrence had run for a first down with four minutes to play before halftime during the Week 13 game and had begun a feet-first slide to end his play. Houston linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair continued to run toward Lawrence and hit the quarterback with his forearm, knocking Lawrence’s head backward, and it later bounced off the turf. The hit occurred in front of the Jacksonville sideline and Jaguars teammates immediately ran to confront Al-Shaair. Al-Shaair was ejected for the hit and was led off the field by team personnel to boos throughout the Florida stadium.

GOP Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., on Sunday expressed support for FBI Director Christopher Wray, just one day after President-elect Donald Trump said he would nominate Kash Patel to lead the agency as Wray’s replacement. After Watergate, FBI directors have typically served 10-year terms to deter the bureau from being seen as a political tool for the president. Still, Rounds said that he would evaluate Patel and Trump’s other Cabinet nominees fairly during the Senate’s “advise and consent” process. “The president has the right to make nominations, but normally, these are for a 10-year term,” Rounds said. “The current FBI director, Chris Wray, was actually appointed by Donald Trump.

The Chicago Bears will get a head start on their search for a new head coach, but who will be among the prime candidates for the job? On the first football Sunday of the post-Matt Eberflus era in Chicago, NFL insiders weighed in on who the Bears may try to bring in for interviews as they conduct their search. Ian Rapoport, appearing on NFL Network’s NFL Gameday, said the team will consider a multitude of top candidates for the job. Things are likely to move slowly for now for the Bears, as the NFL season will roll into January, preventing them from interviewing candidates within the league. They will likely be able to conduct interviews during the postseason, but an announcement on a hire won’t come until their candidate’s season has concluded.
