Amid widespread discontent over President Joe Biden’s management of the border, the overall electorate is moving rightward on immigration too, polls show. For now, there’s no question that hardening GOP attitudes on immigration have been critical to Trump’s strong performance through the early primaries. Then, 56% of GOP primary voters said undocumented immigrants should be offered legal status; in last month’s primary, 55% said they should be deported. Immigration ranked as the most important issue for most GOP primary voters in South Carolina, and finished close behind the economy in both Iowa and New Hampshire. McLaughlin said Trump’s dominance among the GOP primary voters most concerned about immigration encapsulates a broader reason for his early success: widespread satisfaction among Republicans about his record in office.

But his overwhelming victory on Saturday in South Carolina, where he defeated Nikki Haley in her home state, makes it all but official. The Republican nominating contest isn’t a competition. The stakes were extraordinarily high: Many of his Republican opponents see Mr. Trump as, at best, unelectable and, at worst, a threat to the foundations of American democracy. And yet, as the campaign has moved through the first nominating contests, the race has not revealed Mr. Trump’s weaknesses, but instead the enduring nature of his ironclad grip on the Republican Party. “I think the party will be done with Trump when Trump is done with the party,” said David Kochel, a longtime Republican strategist who is opposed to Mr. Trump.

While we’re waiting, here are takeaways from the GOP’s 2024 South Carolina presidential primary. She’d need to win New Hampshire, with its much more moderate electorate built in part on a slew of independents participating in the state’s GOP primary. And that potentially game-changing stretch of the Republican primary race is over. “I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for president. “South Carolina is Trump country,” Scott declared from stage Saturday night after Trump asked him to speak.

CNN —Alexey Navalny died a political martyr after returning home to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin’s brutal rule. But that’s not stopping Donald Trump from coopting his heroic legacy to suggest false equivalence with his own legal troubles. Donald Trump might have feuded with his onetime protégé Ron DeSantis during the GOP primaries. But he now says DeSantis is on his VP shortlist, which also includes Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy. Ron DeSantis may have been one of the worst presidential candidates in recent memory, but he could still find himself in the White House next year. That is if his frenemy, former President Donald Trump, picks him as his vice president. On Tuesday, the GOP presidential frontrunner said in a Fox News town hall that DeSantis was on his vice presidential shortlist.

Former President Donald J. Trump continued to liken himself to the Russian opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny during a town hall in South Carolina on Tuesday, at one point directly comparing a civil fraud judgment against him to the case of an anticorruption activist who died in a Russian prison last week. Halfway through the town hall, the host, Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, asked Mr. Trump how he would come up with the $450 million penalty issued by a New York judge last week. “It is a form of — Navalny,” Mr. Trump said. Mr. Trump did not specifically address Mr. Navalny’s death until Monday, when he posted on social media that the situation was reminiscent of his legal problems. The former president faces four criminal cases, all of which he has attributed to President Biden, although Mr. Biden has no oversight over them.

CNN —Donald Trump’s leadership PAC paid out more than $2.9 million to law firms last month as his legal troubles mounted and racked up an additional $1.9 million in unpaid legal bills at the end of January, according to a filing Tuesday night with federal regulators. Save America, a political action committee seeded with money Trump raised after his 2020 loss, has been the primary vehicle for underwriting legal bills for Trump and some witnesses in the cases surrounding him. Last year alone, Save America spent more than $55 million on legal bills, accounting for nearly 85% of its spending. Trump’s political operation has directed 10% of the money it raises online from his political supporters to Save America. “It is a form of Navalny, it is a form of communism or fascism,” Trump said.

It's a tall order for Haley as South Carolina prepares to vote on Saturday. Trump's 2016 primary win helped cement his front-runner status, and he boasts support from all of the state's top elected leaders and all but one of its congressional Republicans. “We should make sure we tell our partners it’s in their best interest to hold their own weight," Haley said Sunday. She said "Trump did it by saying he was going to encourage Putin to invade our allies. CNN —President Joe Biden and his allies attacked Donald Trump over abortion after the New York Times reported Friday that the former president has privately expressed support for a 16-week federal ban, as Democrats center the politically potent issue ahead of November’s election. Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told CNN the former president has not committed to backing a national abortion ban. But Trump has not made abortion a key part of his campaign speeches and has steered clear on the trail from outlining any specific abortion legislation he would push for if reelected. This comes in sharp contrast with Biden’s campaign, which has put abortion rights front and center in the 2024 race, with TV ads and a “reproductive freedoms tour” led by Vice President Kamala Harris. And a CNN poll conducted in November found that Americans align more with the Democratic Party than the Republican Party on the issue of abortion.
