Asia markets set for weak open as Wall Street rally fades
  + stars: | 2023-06-26 | by ( Lim Hui Jie | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Asia-Pacific markets are set for a weak open in the final week of June, following U.S. markets which snapped a multi-week winning streak Friday. In an early Monday note, CMC Markets analyst Tina Teng, wrote that "economic concerns took central stage again as recession fears mounted, with spiking rates in both Europe and the US rattling global markets." Over the weekend, Europe also saw a brief rebellion by the Wagner private military group in Russia, and markets are likely to be on edge. In Australia, futures for the S&P/ASX 200 were at 7,043, lower than the index's last close of 7,099.2. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index is also poised to fall, with futures at 18,764 compared to the HSI's close of 18,889.97.

SINGAPORE, June 26 (Reuters) - Oil prices rose in early Asian trade on Monday after a failed mutiny by Russian mercenaries over the weekend raised concerns about political instability in Russia and the potential impact on oil supply from one of the world's largest producers. Brent crude futures rose 95 cents, or 1.3%, to $74.80 a barrel by 2300 GMT on Sunday. However, the challenge has raised questions about President Vladimir Putin's grip on power and concerns about possible disruption of Russian oil supply. Goldman Sachs analysts said markets may price a moderately higher probability that domestic volatility in Russia leads to supply disruptions or has a sizable negative impact on oil supply in the future. "China's economic growth has been a nightmare for commodity markets, particularly in oil and industrial metals," CMC Markets analyst Tina Teng said in a note.

While higher rates are typically supportive of currencies, the risk that they will trigger an economic downturn has pushed some investors to seek safe-haven assets like the U.S. dollar. The Turkish lira slid to a record low of 25.589 against the U.S. dollar, after the Turkey's central bank 650 basis points hike to 15% on Thursday missed expectations. In other currencies, the dollar rose broadly and stood near an over seven-month high against the yen at 142.90. The euro slipped 0.04% to $1.0950, while the U.S. dollar rose 0.05% against a basket of six major peers to 102.44. "Most of the Western central banks are now more hawkish than previously projected," said Tina Teng, market analyst at CMC Markets.

June 23 (Reuters) - Oil prices fell for a second straight session and were headed for a weekly decline of more than 3% on Friday, as a higher-than-expected interest rate hike in Britain and warnings about looming rate rises in the U.S. ignited concerns over demand. An increase in the value of the dollar, which has risen 0.3% this week, can weigh on oil demand by making the fuel more expensive for holders of other currencies. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank would move interest rates at a "careful pace" from here as policymakers edge towards ending their historic round of monetary policy tightening. Higher interest rates increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, which could slow economic growth and reduce oil demand. Fears of hikes by major central banks have clouded the fuel demand outlook for the rest of the year.

Barry Diller Ends Talks to Sell The Daily Beast
  + stars: | 2023-06-23 | by ( Benjamin Mullin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The media mogul Barry Diller has pulled The Daily Beast off the auction block. Mr. Diller, the chairman of the digital media company IAC, said on Friday that The Daily Beast — a digital tabloid known for its aggressive political and media coverage — is not for sale. Until recent days, according to people with knowledge of the talks, he had been in discussions about a deal with Ankler Media, a start-up that has earned a reputation for its unsparing coverage of Hollywood elites since Janice Min, a longtime magazine editor, co-founded it early last year. “We did have negotiations with The Ankler, but we have withdrawn from them,” Mr. Diller, 81, said in a statement. “The Daily Beast is not for sale.”He did not elaborate on his plans for The Daily Beast, a publication that the magazine editor Tina Brown first edited in 2008 and that has earned plaudits for its journalism.

THIS SUMMER, some well-deserved downtime is on the agenda for Liza Colón-Zayas. Over the past year, the actress made her Broadway debut in the Tony-nominated “Between Riverside and Crazy,” celebrated three decades as a member of the Labyrinth Theater Company and won critical acclaim for her portrayal of the prickly line cook Tina in FX on Hulu’s “The Bear.” In Season 2, which streams June 22, Tina attends culinary school. Higher interest rates ultimately increase borrowing costs for consumers, which could slow economic growth and reduce oil demand. Oil prices held on to most of the previous session's gains as the market kept a lookout for fresh drivers, including signs of Chinese demand optimism and the latest U.S. inventory data. "China's economic rebound is still the focus of oil traders. More stimulus measures by the Chinese government could improve the oil demand outlook," said Tina Teng, markets analyst at CMC, adding that data next week on Chinese factory activity could steer oil price moves. Meanwhile, official inventory data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration is due later on Thursday.

The book writer for “Once Upon a One More Time,” the Britney Spears jukebox musical opening on Broadway Thursday night, often returns to a memory from five years ago, when Spears sat in a Manhattan theater a few rows in front of him and watched an early reading of the show. “I was just watching her and it was like, ‘Is she going to like this?’” the writer, Jon Hartmere, said recently, recalling his relief whenever he saw Spears clap along or smile as one of her songs came on. “It was pure delight.”A campy fairy-tale spoof that sidesteps the bio-musical formula to focus on a cast of disillusioned Disney princesses and storybook protagonists, “Once Upon a One More Time” is the latest in a long line of jukebox musicals that have plumbed the catalogs of acts including Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and the Temptations in pursuit of box office gold.

NEW YORK, June 20 (Reuters) - Oil futures fell about 2% in choppy trading on Tuesday on forecasts for slower growth of oil demand in China, the world's second-biggest oil consumer, and disappointment with the size of cuts in China's key lending rates. "Oil traders may need to see a materialised strong economic rebound in China to improve their outlook on oil demand," said Tina Teng at CMC Markets in Auckland. Higher interest rates ultimately increase borrowing costs for consumers, which could reduce oil demand by slowing economic growth. A stronger dollar makes crude more expensive for holders of other currencies, which can reduce oil demand. On the supply side, Iran's crude exports and oil output have hit new highs this year despite U.S. sanctions.

The more active WTI crude contract for August delivery was up 10 cents from Friday at $72.03 per barrel. There was no settlement in the WTI contract on Monday due to a public holiday in the United States. "Oil traders may need to see a materialised strong economic rebound in China to improve their outlook on oil demand," said Tina Teng, a markets analyst at CMC Markets in Auckland. TOKYO/BEIJING, June 20 (Reuters) - Oil prices slipped on Tuesday after China cut benchmark lending rates less than some expected, sowing further concern over the oil demand outlook in the world's largest crude importer. The more active WTI crude contract for August delivery was down 71 cents from Friday at $71.22 per barrel. "The rate cuts ... were widely expected, hence it did not offer a bullish push to the oil markets," said Tina Teng, a markets analyst at CMC Markets in Auckland. Egypt Spars With Dutch Museum Over Ancient History

A new Dutch museum exhibit declares, “Egypt is a part of Africa,” which might strike most people who have seen a map of the world as an uncontroversial statement. But the show at the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden goes beyond geography. It explores the tradition of Black musicians — Beyoncé, Tina Turner, Nas and others — drawing inspiration and pride from the idea that ancient Egypt was an African culture. The exhibit is framed as a useful corrective to centuries of cultural erasure of Africans. And some feel that it is their culture and history that are being erased in the Western quest to correct historical racism.

Two of the most powerful women in the village of Delhi in central New York sat face to face in a brick building on Main Street for what would become a fight over the First Amendment. It was the fall of 2019. Tina Molé, the top elected official in Delaware County, was demanding that Kim Shepard, the publisher of The Reporter, the local newspaper, “do something” about what Ms. Molé saw as the paper’s unfair coverage of the county government. Ms. Shepard stood her ground. Not long after, Ms. Molé struck where it would hurt The Reporter the most: its finances.

The wounds of Minneapolis are far from healed. Veterans of the city’s Police Department, which has lost more than 300 officers, say they are running on fumes, weary from patrolling under a cloud of suspicion. Three years after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, a Department of Justice report released on Friday concluded that the city’s Police Department was plagued by unlawful conduct, discrimination and mismanagement. In some ways, it was meant as an answer to the death of Mr. Floyd and to years of complaints about policing in this city of 425,000. But the devastating report seemed to bring little closure in Minneapolis, where many remain traumatized and riven by mistrust.

CNN —The armorer on the set of the movie “Rust” likely was hungover when she loaded a prop gun used by actor Alec Baldwin that fired a live round of ammunition during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, prosecutors said in a court filing. Gutierrez Reed will plead not guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the October 2021 shooting, an attorney for her has said. A final decision on charges against Baldwin would be made before August 8, prosecutors said in the Friday filing. She applied and was accepted to the online program in 2020. In exchange for expanding course offerings and recruiting students, OPMs receive a big chunk of the tuition revenue from the online programs, which usually cost the same as in-person schooling. While it's not always the case, many experts and grads told me that OPMs were offering online students a worse education for a sky-high price. A third-party provider to those schools, 2U signs a contract to offer services such as recruiting and technology to boost online enrollment. OPMs have helped fuel the student debt crisis, saddling may students with tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt and an uncertain future.

The bill passed, and Mr. Findley was targeted with a recall effort by hard-line members of his party, who argued that he should have joined the walkout. That recall effort failed, but it has contributed to Mr. Findley’s concern that there is a shrinking number of lawmakers who are willing to debate and compromise. “We can’t all run out the door if we don’t agree with the viewpoints,” he said. After a previous Republican walkout in 2019, the governor at the time, Kate Brown, unsuccessfully tried to have state troopers round up the lawmakers and force their return.
