Casino stocks are slumping – and that could be bad news for the US economy. Top investor Jim Chanos has touted the Las Vegas strip as a potential economic indicator in the past. Casino stocks' losses have likely been driven by Wall Street taking a gloomier view on the economy, according to analysts. Las Vegas' next big test will be the third-quarter earnings season, with most casino operators expected to announce their results over the next month. AdvertisementAdvertisementDisappointing figures could be one of a growing number of signals suggesting that, like gambling stocks, the economy might be headed for the red.

There would be a referendum within his first term to recognize Indigenous Australians in the constitution and create a permanent body – a Voice to Parliament – to allow them to speak directly to government. Yes voters are much younger, live in the inner-city and voted for the Labor Party or Greens. Paul Smith, Director Government and Social Australia, at YouGov says the young-old divide in this referendum indicates a generational difference in world view. Daniel Morrison-Bird has been door-knocking for months in Perth, Western Australia to convince people to vote Yes. Gerber said far from dividing the country, the Voice is an invitation from Indigenous Australians to form a closer relationship.

Andrew Lichtenstein | Corbis News | Getty ImagesThe U.S. unemployment rate held steady in September, but ticked down among Hispanic workers, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Labor Department. The unemployment rate held steady at 3.8%, and came in slightly ahead of a 3.7% forecast. Broken down, it dipped to 4.3% from 4.4% among Hispanic women and held steady at 4.3% for Hispanic men. However, it does mark a stark from the depths of the pandemic when the group experienced the highest unemployment rate, according to Gould. Among Black men, the unemployment rate increased to 5.6% from 5%, and fell to 4.5% from 4.7% among Black women.

The Barclays study focuses on consumers purchasing Tesla EVs rather than other makes. "[I]n previous years, consumers who bought EVs were spending more on gas prior to their purchase than consumers in recent years," Zhu said. "This suggests that new EV buyers are willing to buy an EV even at lower levels of gas expenditure, and that EV demand will stay higher than before even if gas prices decline." "Our U.S. Barclays credit card data show consumers with lower gas expenditures are now more willing to buy EVs than previously," Zhu said. "In recent years, EV buyers were already spending less on gas prior to their EV purchase than EV buyers in previous years."

Oil prices tick up after OPEC+ panel maintains output cuts

The Equinor ASA offshore oil drilling platform on Johan Sverdrup oil field in the North Sea off the coast of Norway, on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023. Oil prices inched up in early trade on Thursday, clawing back some of the previous session's big losses after an OPEC+ panel maintained oil output cuts to keep supply tight amid concern about a looming slump in global economic growth. Brent crude oil futures were up 11 cents to $85.92 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 7 cents to $84.29 at 0040 GMT. Oil prices settled down more than $5 on Wednesday as a bleaker macroeconomic outlook and fuel demand destruction came into focus, following a meeting of an OPEC+ panel, grouping the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies led by Russia. "We continue to see the market in deficit through the fourth quarter and the softer prices reduce the probability OPEC will ease supply constraints," National Australia Bank analysts said in a note.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 57 points, or 0.2%. Stocks were aided by a retreat in Treasury yields. The rate on the 10-year Treasury note slipped from highs last seen in 2007 after payroll processing firm ADP said that private job growth totaled 89,000 for September. The spread between the 2-year and 10-year Treasury yields ended Wednesday at about 31 basis points. The 2- and 10-year yield curve has been inverted since March 2022 – meaning short-term Treasury rates are higher than long-term rates.

Prices rose 0.05% on average from the previous month after falling since May, according to a survey by China Index Academy, a real estate research firm. Confidence in the property sector, which accounts for one-fourth of economic activity, has been hit since 2021 when Beijing cracked down on debt accumulation by developers, fuelling a debt crisis. Deepening problems in the sector this year have dragged on the world's second-biggest economy and rattled global financial markets. These policies have given major cities like Beijing a tiny boost in new home sales, but some worry the improvement might be short-lived and could potentially dry up demand in smaller cities. If such policies continue to be optimised, the report said, the market in first-tier cities are likely to stabilise this quarter while recovery in smaller cities might take longer.

It’s too soon to tell, but there are alarm bells ringing that indicate investors should be — and are — on edge. Stocks rebounded this year after a bruising 2022, as artificial intelligence excitement led investors to fuel a powerful tech-driven surge. While shares of tech behemoths have led the market’s surge this year, the rally had begun to broaden out in early summer. High yields often mean bad news for stocks, since investors tend to gravitate toward virtually risk-free Treasury bonds when they offer high returns over stocks. Spending in the second quarter grew at its weakest pace since the first quarter of 2022, when it was flat.

One of those strategies is private credit. As the strategy gains steam, some are concerned that higher-for-longer interest rates could put more stress on the balance sheets of borrowers. However, as servicing the debt becomes more expensive, that could force more negotiations between private credit managers and their borrowers. Arougheti said the firm has been benefitting from rising rates, boosting their relative return. He noted that in pulling data points from the 3,000 portfolio companies Ares lends to and invests in, he's seen "fundamental strength despite the rise in rates."

After the September meeting pause last week, the target range for the fed funds rate remained at 5.25% to 5.50%. First, I don't know a soul besides me who agrees with that 20-year versus fed funds rate yield prognosis. They think the fed funds rate will come down or the 20-year yield is already extended. Second, I don't know anyone else who believes the economy is so strong that the Fed is correct to keep on an anti-inflation course. I don't think so.
