“Essentially today there is a northern Gaza and a southern Gaza,” Admiral Hagari said. Earlier in the day, the Israeli military had accused Hamas of using two hospitals in northern Gaza, Sheikh Hamad and Indonesian hospitals, as cover for its operational centers. The Israeli military had earlier made similar accusations about Al Shifa Hospital, in Gaza City, and on Friday the Israeli military confirmed an airstrike near that facility. The communications blackout hit Gaza after sunset, around 6:20 p.m. local time, according to NetBlocks, an internet monitoring service. The first blackout on Oct. 27, which began around sunset, lasted nearly 36 hours and spread fear and panic across Gaza as Israel began a ground invasion.

Gaza was plunged into a communications blackout on Sunday for the third time in 10 days, again leaving its people without access to internet or phone services as night fell and Israel’s heavy bombardment of the enclave continued. The widespread blackout began shortly before sunset, around 4:20 p.m. local time, according to NetBlocks, an internet monitoring service. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said on social media that the blackout affected more than two million civilians, cutting off access to emergency medical services as the bombings continued, and that, as during the previous blackouts, it had lost contact with its teams in Gaza. UNRWA, the U.N. agency that aids Palestinians, also said it was unable to reach “the vast majority” of its team in the enclave. “Without connectivity, people who need immediate medical attention cannot contact hospitals and ambulances,” he said on social media.

“Selling Sunset” is anything but subtle. The Netflix reality show follows a cast of real estate professionals at the Oppenheim Group, a Los Angeles-based luxury brokerage. But as viewers continue to binge the show season after season, chatter has focused not on what the agents and associates are selling, but what they are wearing. Though high-production scripted shows like “Succession” and “White Lotus” sparked lengthy over-analysis surrounding “stealth wealth” or “quiet luxury,” the wardrobe on “Selling Sunset” is flashier — there are more sequins than pinstripes. The show’s sixth season, which premiered in May, was in Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched shows in nearly 60 countries, and there’s more to come — Season 7 premieres on Friday.

US District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan announced that convicted former FTX CEO Sam Bankman will be sentenced on March 28, 2024. Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried will return to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he’s been held since August. Located on the industrial waterfront of Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, the MDC has earned a reputation as one of the worst jails in America. Bankman-Fried is also “friendly” with Genaro García Luna, the former head of Mexico’s FBI, who is awaiting sentencing for drug trafficking, this person said. He seemed to have lost weight and, most surprising, his trademark wild locks were gone, shorn into a tight crew haircut.

TOKYO (AP) — Godzilla, the nightmarish radiation spewing monster born out of nuclear weapons, has stomped through many movies, including several Hollywood remakes. It was a mood that fit his supernatural “very Japanese” Godzilla, Yamazaki said at the Tokyo International Film Festival, where “Godzilla Minus One” is the closing film. That helped inspire the last Japanese Godzilla, the 2016 “Shin Godzilla,” directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. Toho studios hadn’t made a Godzilla film since 2004. But what he really wants to make is a “Star Wars” film.

The agency also revealed Tuesday that the euro zone economy contracted by 0.1% in the third quarter, according to flash estimates, below consensus estimates for GDP to be unchanged from the previous quarter. The ECB expects the euro zone economy to grow by just 0.7% this year, by 1% in 2024 and 1.5% in 2025. The euro zone has been grappling with high inflation for the past 18 months, with the consumer price index peaking at 10.6% in October 2022. The ECB needs to see wage inflation slowing and this could take a further six months," he added.

For 34 hours, the vast majority of the more than two million Palestinians who live in Gaza had no way to reach the outside world, or one another. They had no way to know whether their loved ones were alive or dead. Desperate paramedics tried to save people by driving toward the sound of explosions. In response to the attacks, the Israeli military declared a siege of the densely populated territory, cutting off electricity, water and medical supplies as it rained down a relentless barrage of aerial and artillery bombardments. The Israeli military also said that it was conducting airstrikes in Lebanon after at least 16 rockets were launched from there into Israeli territory.

The World Is Becoming More African

Old World Young Africa As the world grays, Africa blooms with youth. The World Is Becoming More African Part one of a series on how the youth boom is changing the continent, and beyond. But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — A Canadian fishing boat rescued an American man one day after the U.S. Coast Guard ended its search for a missing commercial fishing boat from Washington state with two people board, authorities said. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier said the Canada-based Ocean Sunset spotted a covered life raft drifting in open ocean about 75 kilometers (46 miles) off the west coast of Vancouver Island on Thursday. Strohmaier said the Ocean Sunset's crew found the man conscious on the raft, which was from the Evening fishing boat based in Gray's Harbor, Washington. The man was taken to shore by the Canadian Coast Guard and was reported in stable condition. Strohmaier said Coast Guard officials hoped to speak with the survivor soon to determine whether to renew the search.

The same inevitable supply-and-demand dynamic is about to wash over us again with large language models and generative AI. AI models are trained on masses of data from the past. Humans are good at learning quickly from a small amount of data, while AI models need mountains of information to train on. Soon, human content creators will be vying for attention with content generated by AI models. 'Utility, value and signaling'Hartz, a venture capitalist who now chairs Eventbrite's board, says successful technologists will continue to spend heavily on human experiences.

The current exemption limit is $12.92 million for estates of individuals and $25.84 million for the combined estates of married couples. About 0.1 to 0.2% of estates of people who died in recent years have been subject to federal tax. A common strategy is to trim your estate's value before Dec. 31, 2025, and then keep it below the exemption limit, if feasible, or as low as possible to minimize tax exposure. This would assure substantial resources for their grandkids' educations while reducing the couple's combined estate by $1.7 million. While getting organized to reduce your estate's value by making gifts, it's a good idea to get updated real estate appraisals.

The event, which is running on consecutive weekends this month and will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 29, is halfway between a showhouse and a showroom. More than a dozen 10-by-12-foot room schemes — imagined by creators as fresh as Maitri Mody, a fashion influencer who posts on Instagram under the name Honey I Dressed the Pug, and as seasoned as the talk-show host and domestic strategist Drew Barrymore — offer tips for loosening up tight quarters.
