Nikki Haley still thinks she has a role to play in the Republican primary. Haley told NBC she would stay in the race “as long as we’re competitive” with front-runner former President Donald Trump. A little more than a third of Republican delegates are up for grabs in 15 contests across the country on Super Tuesday. In many of them, Haley could get locked out of delegates entirely if she can’t beat Trump at either the statewide or congressional district level. Haley’s delegate path is full of obstacles unless she can start winning primaries.

The primary season is about to shift into overdrive with Super Tuesday, when Republican voters in 15 states will cast their votes. Polls suggest that former President Donald Trump is very likely to win most, if not all, of these contests. I spoke with Nate Cohn, The New York Times’s chief political analyst, about when Trump’s nomination could become a lock. If the polls are right, there’s really only one scenario: Trump finding himself within easy striking distance of the nomination. Rarely have intraparty battles between Republicans in Texas been as bitter, protracted and consequential as the primary contests culminating in Election Day on Tuesday. The fights have primarily focused on members of the Texas House who angered many conservative voters last year by impeaching the Republican attorney general, Ken Paxton, on charges of corruption and abuse of office. Mr. Paxton, who was acquitted in the Texas Senate, vowed revenge, and number one in his sights has been the house speaker, Dade Phelan. Greg Abbott has also been going after a number of Republicans in the Texas House, seeking to unseat those who opposed his plan to use public money to help families pay for private and religious schools. Aggressive campaigning by both statewide leaders is amplifying tensions that have simmered for years between the party’s old guard and a more socially conservative faction aligned with former President Donald J. Trump that sees Tuesday’s vote as a chance to shift the balance of power in the Texas House, which has served as a moderating force in the state’s politics.

South Carolina’s primaries are open, which means any registered voter can take part in either the Republican primary or the Democratic primary, but not both. When Trump won the South Carolina primary with more than 32% of the vote in 2016, just about 1% of the GOP primary voters were Black. CNN —Menthol cigarette bans are effective at getting people to quit smoking, new research finds. The pooled results show that about a quarter of menthol smokers quit within a year or two when the substance is banned from cigarettes. Menthol cigarette smoking rates were lower in settings with national bans and highest when there were only local or statewide bans. Even if just a quarter of menthol smokers quit, it could improve the health of thousands of people. Menthol itself isn’t addictive, but menthol cigarettes are more attractive to new smokers, studies show, because the flavoring masks the harsh taste and smell that may put some new smokers off.
