China’s Great Wall of Villages China has moved thousands of people to new settlements on its frontiers. Mr. Akester and Mr. Barnett, who have studied Tibet’s border villages for years, reviewed The Times’s findings. In neighboring Xinjiang and Yunnan, The Times identified six new and 59 expanded border villages. ’Tis the season for vacations, so let me make my pitch that the best travel is not lounging at a beach resort but rather journeying into a different world. So I preach both travel and prudence, and on a recent book tour, I found myself often asked about travel advice I had mentioned in my memoir. The most memorable travel often involves encountering something unfamiliar, so consider escaping the herds parading through Paris. A teenager from an affluent family in the New York or Boston areas would step into a different world by taking a ranch job in Wyoming. And this is the kind of travel that is not only affordable but actually pays for the experience.

CNN —The galaxy far, far away is about to add another starry member to its ranks. Oscar-nominee Jude Law was on hand in Anaheim, California on Friday night at D23 – Disney’s massive fan expo that drew a crowd of 12,000 – to present “Skeleton Crew,” a new “Star Wars” series set to premiere on Disney+ in December. Ahead of unveiling the first-look trailer, Law billed the new series as “a timeless adventure story in the spirit of the Amblin coming-of-age films from the ’80s,” mentioning 1985’s “The Goonies” and “E.T.” from 1982 as examples. Things take a decidedly “Goonies”-style turn when the band of misfit youths stumble on a hidden fortress in the forest, where water slides, skeletons and adventure await. “Skeleton Crew” will stream with a two-episode premiere on December 3 on Disney+.

CNN —There are two rather different perceptions of the Balearic island of Ibiza near Spain. “Today, (Ibizan style) still persists and is absolutely recognizable anywhere in the world.”Fashion brand Reformation dedicated their latest summer collection to Ibiza. ReformationAs well as on-island boutiques such as Annie’s Ibiza and Vicente Ganesha, Ibiza style is celebrated by Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson, who grew up vacationing in Ibiza, and since 2017, has spearheaded a high end collaboration between the luxury house and another legendary local institution Paula’s boutique. “When the pandemic happened, there was a chance to reframe what Ibiza was about: slow travel, wellness and mindfulness,” Fonner said. “I don’t really think (Ibiza) has gained popularity in recent years; I believe it has always been popular artistically,” she said.

Despite companies' high expectations for productivity gains from generative AI technology, workers are finding far different results when those tools are added to their jobs. Nearly all of C-suite leaders — 96% — polled in an Upwork Research Institute study in July said they expect the use of gen AI tools to increase their company's overall productivity levels. More than 75% of employees said gen AI tools have even decreased their productivity and added to their workload. Meanwhile, companies are also increasing their spending on new AI tools. Finding a better way of matching executive expectations and worker outcomes is critical if companies want investments in generative AI to pay off.

The door plug was removed at the Boeing factory in Renton, Washington, last September so that problems with some rivets could be repaired. But the necessary paperwork for that temporary door plug removal was apparently never created. But under questioning from the NTSB Lund admitted that it’s not clear who and when that door plug was put in place. “Are you 100% sure there will never be an unauthorized removal (of a door plug)?” Homendy asked. Asked if he could promise there will not be another door plug improperly installed, Silva answer, “I cannot make a promise or guarantee of that.

Jennifer Homendy, Chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, speaks during investigative hearing, into the blowout of a left mid exit door plug on a Boeing 737-9 MAX during Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 flight on January 5, 2024, at the National Transportation Safety Board headquarters in Washington D.C. United States on August 6, 2024. (Photo by Bryan Olin Dozier/Anadolu via Getty Images)A Boeing safety executive told a federal safety hearing on Tuesday that the company is working on design changes to avoid a repeat of the near catastrophic blowout of a door plug from a practically new 737 Max 9 at the start of the year. The National Transportation Safety Board — the body in charge of aviation accident investigations in the U.S. — released more than 3,000 pages of documents ahead its full two-day hearing about Flight 1282, including interviews with employees at Boeing and its beleaguered fuselage maker Spirit AeroSystems , some of which pointed to rework. "I just want a word of caution here, this is not a PR campaign for Boeing," NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said. Bolts that were meant to hold the door in place weren't attached, according to preliminary investigation results.

Carnochan has been my therapist for over a decade, a privilege for which I am grateful on two accounts. First, the surging national demand for therapy has so outstripped supply that it can be hard to find a good therapist anywhere, but especially in San Francisco. Second, working with Carnochan has been so healing that I have come to see psychotherapy as a beautiful profession and Carnochan as its beau idéal — deeply learned, emotionally present and capable of moving in a single conversation from D. W. Winnicott’s theory of the false self to Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay,” from infinity in the Lotus Sutra to the ecstasies of backcountry skiing. I knew Carnochan did some other form of talking to people one on one — coaching, that is — because I once told him that I worried about money and career. Carnochan responded by mentioning that he sometimes helped company executives on professional matters and could work with me in the same spirit.

But there were problems with five rivets near where the door plug was installed, and Boeing workers removed the door plug in order to fix those rivets. It would have had much more difficulty making it safely to the ground if the door plug had failed hours, rather than minutes, from the nearest runway. He has faced harsh criticism for many of Boeing’s problems, with more than a dozen whistleblowers at the company complaining to congressional investigators that they faced pressure and retaliation for flagging safety problems in the company’s assembly process.
