PARIS — Jordan Chiles is a rarity in Olympic history: an athlete forced to return their medal for reasons other than a doping violation. On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee said that the appeal shouldn’t have been allowed, meaning she will have to return her third-place prize. In 2017, the Russian Olympic Committee said that none of the 18 athletes stripped of their medals because of doping violations had returned the physical awards. After Chiles’ bronze bumped Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu off the podium, the country’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said he’d refuse to attend the closing ceremony in protest. “Given these circumstances, we are committed to pursuing an appeal to help Jordan Chiles receive the recognition she deserves,” the U.S. committee said.

Gold prices struggled for momentum on Monday as investors looked forward to a key inflation report that could shed more light on the U.S. central bank's next policy move. Spot gold eased 0.13% to $2,427.86 per ounce by 0352 GMT, trading in a narrow $10 price range. The U.S. consumer price index data, due on Wednesday, is expected to show that headline and core prices rose 0.2% month-on-month. "Further inflation progress reflected in the upcoming CPI data could see gold eye for a retest of its all-time high once more," said IG market strategist Yeap Jun Rong. Among other metals, spot silver fell 0.3% to $27.36 per ounce, platinum shed 0.47% to $917.83 and palladium fell 0.2% to $903.48.

Now Uber, the giant ride-hailing company that has been a magnet for such litigation, is pitching a plan that could fulfill that fantasy, at least in one state. The company is seeking to place a measure on Nevada’s ballot that would drastically limit the amount of money that lawyers could collect when they brought successful lawsuits. If the measure passes, it will make it less attractive — and in some cases financially impractical — for plaintiffs’ lawyers to file such suits.

Clutched in her hands was a small cache of gold, silver and bronze coins, as well as gold and pearl earrings. “Trapped in the cramped little room, their deaths were caused by the pyroclastic flow that buried them,” the archaeologists said. A large bronze candelabrum was found on the floor. They have provided some of the most important discoveries ever made in the ancient city.

While Team USA is far ahead in the total medal rankings with 126 in Paris, it went into the last competition of the Games trailing China in the gold medal race by one. The Asian nation finished with 40 gold medals, and the US had 39 entering the final event – the women’s basketball gold medal game between Team USA and France. Team USA would win that game in dramatic circumstances, leading to a tie in the gold medal standings. In 2021, Team USA took the overall gold medal race by one, with 39 to China’s 38.
