"If Jim Jordan becomes Speaker, it is very unlikely that Congress will do anything on big tech in the near future," said Jon Schweppe, a policy director at the conservative American Principles Project. As Jordan's internal campaign gained momentum on Monday, Washington's thousands of lobbyists raced to determine how a Jordan speakership might impact their clients' bottom lines. "Instead, you'll see more performative anger over petty issues, designed to redirect attention away from the things that could actually hold big tech accountable," said the lobbyist. As chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, Jordan has accused tech companies of censoring conservatives on their platforms. For big tech companies, the prospect of bipartisan antitrust legislation passing in Congress would amount to a far more urgent threat to their businesses than a partisan content moderation bill.

But it’s a looming catastrophe for New Orleans, where officials estimate that tens of thousands of the city’s water pipes are made of lead. Many residents aren’t even aware they have lead pipes supplying their drinking water, said Jessica Dandridge, executive director of the Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans. Dandridge’s organization works both on water quality issues around the city’s lead pipes and stormwater management and flood control, and they are one of BlueConduit’s local partners working to map the pipes. As a result, lead drinking pipes are all over the country; some national estimates say the total number of pipes is around 9.2 million. It’s “almost a sleuthing or detective (work), trying to find out where the pipes are and where they go,” New Orleans City Councilmember JP Morrell told CNN.

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersThe messy race to elect the next Republican speaker of the House of Representatives is injecting chaos into the typically genteel world of high-dollar GOP fundraising, threatening to disrupt a vital element of the Republican strategy to maintain its House majority. One faction of wealthy donors is intent on exacting revenge on the eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to oust former speaker Kevin McCarthy, according to people familiar with the matter. They're all saying, 'don't give, don't raise any money,'" a Republican fundraiser said. "If you have scheduled a fundraiser for any Republican House member who refuses to vote for Scalise, cancel it. Sen. Robert Menendez is trailed by reporters after attending a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on federal judge nominations on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 4, 2023. Sen. Bob Menendez has been accused of accepting bribes and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt, according to a superseding federal indictment filed Thursday. For more than four years through June 2022, Menendez, D-N.J., along with his wife and others, "willfully and knowingly combined, conspired, confederated, and agreed together and with each other" to have the senator act as an agent for the Egyptian government, the indictment alleges. The indictment also alleges that Menendez, who is up for reelection next year, "provided sensitive U.S. government information and took other steps that secretly aided" Egypt's government. Menendez and his wife received thousands of dollars in bribes "in exchange for Menendez's acts and breaches of duty to benefit" Egypt and others, "including with respect to foreign military sales and foreign military financing," the indictment says.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThere is no special carve-out in international law that allows the victims of war crimes to commit war crimes in return. War crimes are seldom punished if they are endorsed by a superpower. Even during the bloody post-9/11 period, Western governments refrained from announcing that they intended to commit war crimes. When it came to terrorists, he said during his first campaign, "you have to take out their families," an explicit endorsement of war crimes. But it took Vladimir Putin's 2022 invasion of Ukraine to fully put Trump's stated doctrine into practice — a modern military, in uniform, openly committing war crimes at scale.

The Queen’s question returns with a vengeance
  + stars: | 2023-10-06 | by ( Felix Martin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
The world’s leading central banks had spent the previous two decades focusing on low inflation, neglecting risks to financial stability. Central bankers counter correctly that predictive accuracy is not the same as explanatory power. Yet it is far from clear how today’s independent central banks should respond to these overtly political struggles. In 2021, when the Phillips Curve was asleep at the wheel, the growth in the money supply was flashing red. The unfortunate truth is that there are many answers to the Queen’s question this time round – but no single magic solution.

The paprika made me think of the terrific food writer Arthur Schwartz, who was once the restaurant critic for The Daily News and later became known as the Food Maven. Arthur and I got to talking about the spice when I interviewed him for a story about chicken paprikash. I’d asserted that most paprika languishes in spice drawers, and is stale and flavorless as a result. To make a proper paprikash or goulash, I said, the smart move is to purchase some new paprika, bright and flavorful. Lidey’s recipe delivers!
