REUTERS/Julia Nikhinson/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - U.S. House Representative George Santos said he will not run for reelection after a damning House Ethics Committee report referred "additional uncharged and unlawful conduct" by him to the Justice Department on Thursday. I will however NOT be seeking re-election for a second term in 2024," Santos said in a post on the X social media site. "Representative Santos’ conduct warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House" of Representatives, the bipartisan committee said in a statement. Ethics Chairman Michael Guest, a Republican, intended to file a motion to expel on Friday, according to media reports. Santos survived a vote to expel him from the House brought by fellow House Republicans from New York state in early November.

The House Ethics Committee on Thursday found “substantial evidence” that Representative George Santos had violated federal law, ending a nearly nine-month investigation and setting the stage for another likely push to expel the embattled first-term Republican from New York. House investigators found evidence that Mr. Santos used campaign funds for personal purposes, defrauded donors, and filed false or incomplete campaign finance and financial disclosure reports, according to a 56-page report released on Thursday. The committee voted unanimously to refer its findings to the Department of Justice, saying that Mr. Santos’s conduct “warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House.”And while the panel refrained from recommending any punitive measures, there were already indications that the report could be the catalyst for a third effort to remove Mr. Santos from office. Numerous representatives have previously said that they would support his expulsion if the committee found criminal wrongdoing or a severe breach of ethics.

Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., leaves a House Republican Conference meeting on the speaker of the House discussions in Longworth Building on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. House Republicans who previously opposed efforts to oust GOP Rep. George Santos are now lining up to expel him after a scathing ethics report accused the embattled New York lawmaker of brazen campaign fraud and theft. The report, released Thursday morning by the House Ethics Committee, found that Santos "sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit." Santos, who was already facing related criminal charges in New York federal court, announced later Thursday that he would not seek reelection in 2024. "I will continue on my mission to serve my constituents up until I am allowed," Santos wrote on X shortly after the report came out.

The House Ethics Committee released a report regarding its investigation into George Santos. Included in its hundreds of pages of evidence are documents showing stocks Santos once traded. It appears he bought and sold stocks of GameStop and AMC when it en vogue. Buried in "Exhibit 58" of the committee's "Appendix D Part 5" is a selection of tens of thousands of dollars worth of GameStop and AMC Entertainment stock trades Santos reported making in 2021. WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Ethics committee in a scathing report Thursday said it has amassed “overwhelming evidence” of lawbreaking by Rep. George Santos of New York that has been sent to the Justice Department, concluding flatly that the Republican “cannot be trusted” after a monthslong investigation into his conduct. Shortly after the panel's report was released, Santos blasted it as a “politicized smear” in a tweet on X but said that he would not be seeking reelection to a second term. Santos has maintained his innocence and had long refused to resign despite calls from many of his colleagues to do so. The ethics panel's report also detailed Santos’ lack of cooperation with its investigation and how he “evaded” straightforward requests for information. Santos easily survived a vote earlier this month to expel him from the House as most Republicans and 31 Democrats opted to withhold punishment while both his criminal trial and the House Ethics Committee investigation continued.

“Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit,” the report concluded. Ethics panel concludes sexual harassment allegation against Santos was not substantiatedThe House Ethics panel said there was not substantial evidence to support a sexual harassment allegation brought against Santos. But the report also indicates that there was some tension between the overlapping DOJ criminal probe and House ethics probe. The ethics panel reached out to the Justice Department to deconflict their investigations, and top DOJ officials asked them in March to pause the ethics probe. The House report says DOJ’s “deferral requests” prevented them from getting to the bottom of certain allegations.

George Santos of New York said Thursday he will not seek reelection in 2024 in the wake of a damning House Ethics report that found "substantial evidence" of campaign fraud and other violations by the embattled congressman. Santos "blatantly stole from his campaign" and "sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit," according to the report from the investigative body of the House Ethics Committee. The full ethics panel, led by Republican Rep. Michael Guest of Mississippi, unanimously adopted the report and voted to refer its findings to the Department of Justice. The scathing, 56-page ethics report is only the latest blow to Santos, the scandal-plagued freshman lawmaker who is facing a raft of criminal theft and fraud charges in New York federal court. Last month, Santos' former campaign treasurer Nancy Marks pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud charges related to her work for Santos.

Disgraced Rep. George Santos announced Thursday that he will not seek reelection after the House Ethics Committee released a blistering report detailing “potential violations of federal criminal law” on his part and referred its findings to the Justice Department. He deceived donors into providing what they thought were contributions to his campaign but were in fact payments for his personal benefit. But both failed to garner enough support, with some Republicans arguing at the time that they would wait for the Ethics Committee to release its findings. Though the committee did not recommend House action taken against Santos, another expulsion vote is expected to follow, likely once the chamber returns from a Thanksgiving recess. Meanwhile, Santos already faces a 23-count federal indictment, though he pleaded not guilty earlier this year.

The report details “substantial evidence” that one of the nation’s most famous liars had violated federal laws. It only adds to the long list of news stories that have uncovered how much of what Santos told voters was not true. Today, the odds became pretty good that enough Republicans might join Democrats in voting to expel Santos. Like Trump, Santos is a symptom, not the cause of what has been happening to the Republican Party. Eliminating him from the caucus will not solve the problem at the core of the party.

He had just flipped a Long Island congressional seat, improbably helping deliver Republicans a House majority. Over just a few days last November, Mr. Santos dropped $6,000 at Ferragamo, perhaps some of it on the red designer sneakers he later wore to walk the marble halls of Congress. He paid off his rent, and he pulled out another $1,000 in spending money at an A.T.M. It would have been nothing for the kind of wealthy financier Mr. Santos purported to be on the campaign trail. All of it was being illegally funded by Mr. Santos’s congressional campaign, which wired him $20,000 just after Thanksgiving without ever telling campaign donors or the Federal Election Commission.

That's certainly what ESPN executives thought, and they wanted to tie in Stevenson's fight against Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC lightweight world championship with the opening night of the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix. It certainly makes sense from a programming standpoint, giving ESPN a Las Vegas lead-in as it promotes both events. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum told fighthype.com that's also why a fight will take place on the Thursday before the Super Bowl, which is Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. Top Rank president Todd duBoef said, however, other events such as the NFL draft in Las Vegas last year had other attractions tied to them that made the overall experience a success. That led to discussions about staging a fight night that could feed off the F1 publicity and even draw those in town primarily to see the race.

Rep. George Santos, a New York Republican, is scheduled to go to trial next year. Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesA former aide to U.S. Rep. George Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud Tuesday for impersonating a high-ranking House staffer while fundraising, the second known associate of the New York Republican to admit to crimes related to the congressman’s campaign activities. Samuel Miele, who worked for Santos on two campaigns, entered the plea at a Long Island federal courthouse. Prosecutors said he also admitted that he charged credit cards without authorization for contributions to the campaigns of Santos and other candidates, as well as for his own personal use.

Mr. Santos, a Republican representing parts of Long Island and Queens, has not been charged in connection with Mr. Miele’s efforts. The congressman has said that he was unaware of the ruse, and fired Mr. Miele shortly after learning of it from Republican leadership. Prosecutors accused Mr. Miele of carrying out a fund-raising scheme in the fall of 2021 to aid Mr. Santos’s ultimately successful election campaign for the House. For his efforts, prosecutors say, he was paid 15 percent on whatever he brought in. Mr. Santos is facing 23 of his own felony counts, including wire fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft.

A former fundraiser for U.S. Rep. George Santos pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal wire fraud charge, admitting he impersonated a high-ranking congressional aide while raising campaign cash for the embattled New York Republican. Miele is the second campaign aide to Santos who took a plea deal in a federal probe. Federal prosecutors say Santos wired some of the money to his personal bank account and used the rest to pad his campaign coffers. Santos has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and has vowed to clear his name. Santos also recounted what he believed was an attempt by Miele last summer to try to rejoin Santos' campaign.

CENTRAL ISLIP, New York, Nov 14 (Reuters) - A former fundraiser for indicted U.S. Representative George Santos pleaded guilty to fraud on Tuesday, adding to the pressure on the embattled New York Republican. U.S District Judge Joanna Seybert accepted the plea, part of an agreement with federal prosecutors, and set Miele's sentencing for April 30. At the hearing, Miele admitted he pretended he was chief of staff to the then minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, to help solicit contributions for Santos' campaign. Miele is the second person close to Santos to plead guilty to federal charges in recent weeks. WASHINGTON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson's plan to avoid a partial government shutdown secured tentative support from top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer on Monday, even as some of Johnson's hardline Republican colleagues pushed back against it. Without changes, the Texas Republican said he would oppose efforts to bring the bill to the floor. The bill is intended to pressure the House and Senate to agree on spending bills for fiscal 2024 by the assigned dates. Johnson warned Democrats that House Republicans would impose a full-year CR for 2024 "with appropriate adjustments to meet our national security priorities" if Congress fails to reach agreement on full-year spending. Failure to hit that benchmark led to McCarthy's ouster, but some House Republicans suggested Johnson deserved more time.
