To better understand earthquake lights, Derr and his colleagues gathered information on 65 American and European earthquakes associated with trustworthy reports of earthquake lights dating back to 1600. Other theories about what causes earthquake lights include static electricity produced by the fracturing of rock and radon emanation, among many others. At present there is no consensus among seismologists on the mechanism that causes earthquake lights, and scientists are still trying to unlock the mysteries of these outbursts.

(AP) — A former California police officer turned serial killer who was on death row after being convicted of murdering six people in the 1980s has died of natural causes, authorities said. Anthony Sully, 79, died Friday at a medical facility outside the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, where he had been housed for decades, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The Marin County Coroner’s Office will determine Sully’s official cause of death, the department said in a news release Monday. The victims were beaten, stabbed and shot inside an electrical supply warehouse in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983. Three of the bodies were found stuffed into barrels dumped at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

So I can say from experience that today's corporate return-to-office mandates are ridiculous, unnecessary and, in some instances, even cruel. For one, CEOs and CFOs are looking at big expenditures on corporate offices that remain either empty or are vastly oversized. The best run companies are focusing more on the thing they can best measure from afar: the work employees actually do. Not only do you do the work, you also eat there, work out there, and do your hobbies on campus. An office work environment will naturally evolve back to being a social hub over time, without draconian mandates that lack data and research to support them.

PagerDuty — The stock declined 7.7% after PagerDuty issued third-quarter earnings guidance that missed analysts' expectations. The company expects earnings per share between 13 cents and 14 cents for the quarter, below a StreetAccount consensus of 15 cents per share. The company's earnings per share came out at $1.71, however, which was lower than analysts' expectations of $1.76, according to StreetAccount. The database software maker posted adjusted earnings of 93 cents per share on revenue totaling $423.8 million for the second quarter.

Here is a list of the biggest U.S. cities by population in 1900: New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Boston, Baltimore, Cleveland, Buffalo, San Francisco and Cincinnati. Some of those cities have continued to thrive, but others have faded. This year Baltimore is the 30th biggest city, Cleveland 54th, St. Louis 75th and Buffalo 79th. Is the shrinkage of some American cities, towns and villages an inevitable consequence of economic change or something to be vigorously resisted? The San Jose area has the largest pay gap between holders of a graduate degree versus a bachelor's. Some top law schools cost over $200,000 over the course of the program, while medical schools average nearly $219,000 a year. SmartAsset found the average graduate degree holder made $72,000 a year. For cities including The Villages, Florida; Prescott, Arizona; and Morristown, Tennessee, graduate-degree holders made less than $55,000. Florida has two metropolitan areas in the top 15 for graduate-degree income difference, though neither Texas nor New Jersey ranks in the top 25.
