Travis T. King, the American soldier who returned to the United States last month after crossing into North Korea in July, has been charged in military court with multiple offenses, including desertion, assaulting other soldiers and child pornography. Private King, 23, is being held at a civilian jail just outside Fort Bliss, near El Paso, according to a family spokesman. He was moved there from Fort Sam Houston, near San Antonio, where he had been undergoing reintegration procedures. The charges were filed on Sunday by officials at Fort Bliss. Biden announced $3.5 billion for 58 projects across the country to strengthen the electric grid. This is the largest federal investment ever made in grid infrastructure, said US Energy Secretary. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said it was the largest federal investment ever in grid infrastructure, supporting projects that will harden electric systems and improve energy reliability and affordability. The federal spending, combined with money promised by private partners, could result in up to $8 billion in investments nationally to upgrade the grid, Granholm said. Once put in place, though, these types of changes are difficult to roll back, said Paul Hill, the founder of the Center on Reinventing Public Education. Schools don’t work like businesses — beta testing a particular practice, looking at the results and moving forward based on the outcome. Instead, these types of realignments can become the status quo, regardless of what the data says, according to Hill. After my previous story, I did hear from some educators who’ve had positive experiences applying the 50 percent floor. But that doesn’t change the reality that strong evidence is lacking that such a practice is academically effective on a large scale.

Lindsay Bira swears by freediving — lengthy stints of underwater diving while holding your breath — as a stress reduction method. When you're stressed at work, practicing a "breath hold" freediving exercise at your desk can help, Bira said on Wednesday at the 2023 NeuroLeadership Institute Summit in New York. It only takes 60 seconds. "You are, physiologically, totally capable" of holding your breath longer than 60 seconds, but your brain starts to send distress signals before you reach the milestone, she added. When you take a second — or 60 seconds — to breath-hold and reframe your thinking in those moments, you're doing something called "reappraisal," Bira said.

Tens of millions in the Americas will have front-row seats for Saturday's rare “ring of fire” eclipse of the sun. It’s a prelude to the total solar eclipse that will sweep across Mexico, the eastern half of the U.S. and Canada, in six months. Home prices continue to increase in most major U.S. cities, even as rising mortgage costs have discouraged buyers, a Realtor.com report finds. The price gains are most felt in Greater Los Angeles, where home prices increased 23.8% over the 12 months ending in September 2023, according to Realtor.com data released Thursday. California has a longstanding housing shortage — perhaps the worst in the country — so home price growth in L.A. and San Diego isn't overly surprising, especially considering price gains in recent years. Median home prices in L.A. and San Diego have increased by 38% and 48% since January 2020, respectively, based on Realtor.com's active listings data. As for some smaller markets with big price gains — such as Richmond, Cincinnati, Columbus and Rochester — the "commonality is that they're relatively affordable, so demand remains relatively high," says Hale.

Hurd failed to qualify for both the first GOP debate in Milwaukee in August and the second debate the following month in Simi Valley, California. “America is at a crossroads and it’s time to come together and make Joe Biden a one-term president,” Haley wrote on X in response to Hurd's endorsement. Hurd was hoping to resonate with voters seeking a pro-business Republican with a strong national security background who was also unafraid to seek bipartisan consensus. “President Biden can’t solve these problems — or won’t,” Hurd said in his announcement video. “Donald Trump is running to stay out of prison,” Hurd declared at a July GOP dinner in Iowa.

It has the the third-highest cost of living in the U.S., possibly contributing to Purdy's desire for a roommate. From our home in Denver, my wife, three kids and I often travel to visit family in Florida, California, Georgia and New York. And when I travel for work as a professional credit card reviewer and consultant, I often bring a kid or two along. My path to companion pass bliss came through Southwest credit cards, such as the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card, but frequent flights can also get you there. As our family grew, my wife also began earning a Companion Pass, allowing the whole family to travel at a steep discount. The widely followed energy analyst is often ahead of the curve, including in early 2020 when he warned that oil prices could dip negative. And if there's a recession, less economic activity should lead to even lower oil prices. However, higher oil prices would further weigh on demand from consumers and businesses, which raises the risk of causing — or worsening — a recession. Paul Sankey, Sankey Research (based on Bloomberg data)Although refining margins have downward momentum, Sankey said a long oil market drawdown isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion. Geopolitical tensions are an increasingly serious threat, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has recently warned, and a sudden conflict breakout could cause oil prices to surge.

CNN —For the first time, a NASA mission is setting off on a distant journey to visit a metal world in our solar system. This illustration depicts how scientists envision the Psyche asteroid. Over time, Psyche likely collided with other rocky objects, losing its outer crust and mantle until only its metal core remained. “We have never seen the surface of a metal world up close. “If you brought back as much metal as likely exists in Psyche, then the metals would no longer be rare and the price would plummet,” Metzger said.
