The Shandong participated in Chinese military drills around Taiwan in April, and again entered the Pacific last month. China says the Taiwan Strait is not an international waterway and that it alone has sovereignty there, which both Taiwan and the United States dispute. As of Thursday morning, the Chinese carrier group was continuing to sail northwards, Taiwan's defence ministry said. The Shandong, commissioned in 2019, also sailed through the Taiwan Strait in June.

OTTAWA, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Chinese warplanes buzzed a Canadian helicopter over international waters in the South China Sea last weekend and then fired flares at it, Defence Minister Bill Blair said on Friday, saying the incidents had put the crew in danger. Blair said a Chinese jet had initially flown right over the helicopter on Sunday, causing it to experience significant turbulence. "These maneuvers put the safety of all personnel involved in unnecessary risk," he told reporters, saying Ottawa considered the recent actions by Chinese jets to be "significantly unsafe". In May, the Pentagon said a Chinese fighter jet carried out an "unnecessarily aggressive" maneuver near a U.S. military plane over the South China Sea in international airspace. The encounter followed what Washington calls a recent trend of increasingly dangerous behavior by Chinese military aircraft.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington wants to build an economic relationship with Beijing that takes into account national security and human rights and is fair to both sides, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday. In her speech, Yellen said Washington will not cut its economic ties with Beijing but pursue a “serious and clear-eyed" approach. “As I’ve said, the United States does not seek to decouple from China. “The United States has long been a Pacific nation, and it is abundantly clear we remain one today,” she said. “We are deepening our economic ties across the region, with tremendous potential benefits for the U.S. economy and for the Indo-Pacific.”

MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippine foreign ministry on Thursday accused China of intruding into its waters after an incident involving the two countries' military vessels at a disputed shoal in the South China Sea earlier this week. "It is China that is intruding into Philippine waters," the foreign ministry said in a statement. "The Philippines has consistently demanded that Chinese vessels in Bajo de Masinloc leave the area immediately," the foreign ministry said. The shoal, located 200km (124 miles) off the Philippines, was part of an arbitration claim filed by Manila at an international tribunal. The court ruled in 2016 that Beijing's claim to 90% of the South China Sea had no basis under international law, but China has refused to recognise the ruling.

The station is essentially complete, so the new crew will conduct medical and scientific experiments and maintain equipment.
