After about a year of hunting, she found a co-op apartment in Carroll Gardens that felt right: a third-floor one-bedroom of about 475 square feet, with windows that looked out through treetops. It was about half as large as the rental she was living in at the time, and the cramped bedroom was only eight feet wide, but she could envision ways to make the space work better. In the living room, the middle third of one wall was brick, while the rest was drywall. “I was pretty sure that brick would have extended along the entire party wall,” Ms. Kalita said. “I was able to pick up four inches of extra living space,” she said, noting that she added a simple, plaster-covered mantel as a focal point, although there’s no fireplace.

Now, Lahaina’s historic 150-year-old banyan tree has been charred by the wildfires and is dull in color – but still alive. “Banyan Tree in Lahaina smoldering at the base, but still standing,” Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz wrote accompanying a video he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. That history includes the oft-visited banyan tree, which was enjoying its sesquicentennial anniversary this year until the fire broke out. Banyan tree branches produce roots that spawn additional, accessory trunks such that the trees grow up as well as out. Las Vegas, Nevada CNN —Thousands of hackers will descend on Las Vegas this weekend for a competition taking aim at popular artificial intelligence chat apps, including ChatGPT. The hackers are working with the support and encouragement of the technology companies behind the most advanced generative AI models, including OpenAI, Google, and Meta, and even have the backing of the White House. “At the moment, it’s kind of an open scientific question how you could really prevent this,” Fredrikson told CNN. Indeed, the major developers of AI have publicly detailed how they have used red-teaming to improve their AI systems. Arati Prabhakar, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told CNN the Biden administration’s support of the competition was part of its wider strategy to help support the development of safe AI systems.

REUTERS/Patrick T. Fallon/File PhotoAug 7 (Reuters) - Beyond Meat (BYND.O) cut annual revenue forecast and missed second-quarter net sales estimates, as slowing demand for its pricier plant-based meat products shows no signs of recovery, sending shares down 8% in extended trading on Monday. Bogged down by inflationary pressures, customers are opting for lower-priced animal protein over alternatives such as plant-based products. The ambiguity around the health benefits of plant-based meat is also weighing on growth, said CEO Ethan Brown in a post-earnings call. The company forecast 2023 revenue between $360 million and $380 million, compared with its prior expectation of $375 million to $415 million. Beyond Meat's quarterly net revenue fell nearly 31% to $102.1 million, missing analysts' average estimate of $108.4 million, according to Refinitiv data.

Patrick T. Fallon | AFP | Getty ImagesAn appeals court Thursday allowed a rule restricting asylum at the southern border to temporarily stay in place. The government had gone quickly to the appeals court asking for the rule to be allowed to remain in use while the larger court battles surrounding its legality play out. The new asylum rule was put in place back in May. The government said the new asylum rule was an important tool to control migration. One of the groups, the American Civil Liberties Union, noted in a news release Thursday that the ruling didn't weigh the legality of the asylum rule and that they were confident they'd ultimately prevail.

But take a look at the corporate disclosures of America's largest pharmaceutical companies, and a puzzling hole opens. Large legal loopholesThe offshore migration of these pharmaceutical companies' profits may seem egregious, but the tax gymnastics are generally legal. On paper, America's corporate-tax rate is 21%, but the country's largest and most profitable pharmaceutical companies don't pay anything close to that. What's more, the superlow rate enjoyed by American pharmaceutical companies isn't necessary for these firms to be internationally competitive. Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, allows the government to conduct targeted surveillance of foreign nationals living outside the U.S. without needing to obtain a warrant. As recently as this month, a court opinion disclosed that FBI employees wrongly searched foreign surveillance data for the last names of a U.S. senator and a state senator. But data on U.S. citizens is still collected when they interact with a foreign surveillance target — that's known as "incidental" collection. Lawmakers from both sides have said they won't vote to renew the provision unless major changes are made in how the FBI uses foreign surveillance data to investigate Americans. "And that means first and foremost addressing the warrantless surveillance of Americans in violation of the Fourth Amendment."

Opinion: The Donald Trump and Hunter Biden surprises

So it was remarkable Wednesday when the deal for Hunter Biden to plead guilty to two misdemeanors for his failure to pay taxes on time fell apart in a federal courtroom after the judge raised questions about it. Special counsel Jack Smith unexpectedly added a major allegation to the indictment charging former President Donald Trump with mishandling classified documents. The Trump and Hunter Biden developments underlined how America’s political climate is being shaped by what happens in the courts. This addition, an alleged surveillance tape conspiracy, almost reads like a spy novel.”“It features Trump employee and co-defendant Walt Nauta’s surprise clandestine trip to Florida. To W. James Antle III, it was the Hunter Biden plea deal snafu that brought to the forefront the “powerful split screen that drives” how Republican voters see the emerging 2024 presidential race.

"But when we go to an AI server, Intel's contribution drops to low-single digit percent, and that's where Nvidia's contribution gets to almost 60%, 70% of the price of the server." Still, it's possible AMD also saw softer demand for its data-center CPUs in the last quarter due to ramped-up AI spending. Like Intel, AMD is also working to bring its own AI-focused chips to market . Yes, Nvidia stock has had a monster run, more than tripling year-to-date, but the fundamental reason for that outperformance — its AI dominance — is completely intact. It remains an "own it, don't trade" stock, alongside Apple (AAPL).

Stephanie Pullman, 72, died after her power was shut off over a $51 late bill. Pullman's death in 2018 led to changes in how power companies deal with overdue bills in the summer. A recent heatwave in Arizona has the governor asking power companies to put policies in writing. The medical examiner's office said Pullman died from "environmental heat exposure " combined with cardiovascular disease after the shutoff. “The recent heat waves and scorching summer temperatures demonstrate the economic cost of heat stress,” Chris Lafakis, Moody’s Analytics’ director of economic research, wrote in an emailed response to a CNN query. Moody’s Analytics estimates that chronic physical risk from heat stress could reduce worldwide GDP by up to 17.6% by 2100. The losses are steepest in sectors such as agriculture and construction, but no industry or business is immune, she said. “Every summer we have a stretch [of excessively hot weather], where it might last from four days up to a week,” he said. “We have to look at the potential of our business model shifting to a nine-month facility going forward,” she said.

When I wake up during the night, I try every mental trick to avoid thinking about my job. Because if my thoughts wander to anything work-related, I will ruminate — about deadlines, unfinished tasks, the laugh-free joke I made during a meeting — and I’ll be awake for hours. This is a familiar scenario for Guy Winch, the author of “Emotional First Aid” and a co-host of the “Dear Therapists” podcast. We’re often so focused at work that we don’t realize we’re feeling stressed, said Dr. Winch, who has a popular TED Talk on how to limit work-related overthinking. People who do it often believe that they’re gaining insight into a problem.

"Early on in my career, I wanted to prove how smart I was and so I did a lot more talking than listening," Cuban said. At the time, Cuban says he was sleeping on the floor of a three-bedroom apartment with six roommates in Dallas. The desire to prove himself sometimes led Cuban to be "too cocky," he says, which could rub people the wrong way.
