A post on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “BREAKING: President Obama has been named as Jeffrey Epstein’s middle man to JP Morgan according to Bloomberg” (here). Some posts link to an Aug. 16 Bloomberg report with the headline, “Epstein Tapped JPMorgan to Help Goldman Lawyer Open Account” (here). The video, the work of a satirical content creator, was shared without that context on social media, leaving people confused. The manipulated video clip includes a man wearing a cap telling Hurd to “shut the hell up” leaving hosts of the show speechless before the broadcast is apparently interrupted with the on-screen message, “Signal Lost. But here’s the difference, so that means, we should just give up and accept that Donald Trump is going to be the Republican nominee? Footage of burning buildings is being shared online alongside the false claim it shows Nigeria’s embassy in Niger being attacked amid unrest sparked by a coup. However, the video actually shows an assault on different buildings – the headquarters of the deposed president’s party - in Niger’s capital, Niamey. However, the footage shows the headquarters of the Nigerien – not Nigerian – Party for Democracy and Socialism. The video was addressed in a separate Reuters fact-check amid claims it showed an assault on France’s embassy in Niger (here). The footage shows an attack on Niger’s ruling party headquarters, not the Nigerian embassy in the country.

A video of a military parade in Algeria is being falsely claimed online to show the Algerian army arriving in Niger. Reuters verified the exact location of the video using satellite imagery to be in Algeria, not Niger. The column of military vehicles in the clip is travelling on the eastbound carriageway of Rocade Nord d’Alger, opposite a service point for logistics giant DHL. The military vehicles in the video also have posters with "60" stuck on them. The video shows military vehicles in Algeria, not Niger.

“The Whopper”, a product from global fast food chain Burger King, carries the same name in France, despite online posts sharing an image of the burger’s wrapper purportedly in a French location of the chain with the title “Americain Retardé”. A Burger King spokesperson said the photo did not show a genuine Burger King product. Reuters found no evidence the product carries the name in the video in France. French Burger King menus list the burger with the name “Whopper” (www.burgerking.fr/carte/menus). The Burger King Whopper burger does not carry an offensive slogan in France.

A video compilation featuring clips of the 2020 explosion at Lebanon’s Beirut port has been falsely linked online to the Russian missile strikes on the port of Odesa in Ukraine in 2023. The clip at 1:03-1:09 can be seen in a Beirut explosion video hosted by licensing platform Newsflare (here). Reuters was not able to source the clip showing a yellow car (1:33-1:43), but the visuals of the explosion align with the other clips of the Beirut explosion. The white structure visible in the final video at 1:44 video matches the silos at the Beirut port (bit.ly/47n9tZ8). A video compilation shows the Beirut port blast in 2020, not Russian missile attacks on the port in Odesa, Ukraine.

Posts online suggest the sprinkler system had been funded by U.S. funds sent to support Ukraine’s war efforts against Russia. A video of flames being blown across a street by heavy winds is not related to the August 2023 Maui fires, contrary to claims online. The clip dates from 2022 and shows a fire in Cleveland, Ohio. Reuters geolocated the video to Cleveland, Ohio. A YouTube video titled “Cleveland Flat Mulch Bed Fire” posted on June 18, 2022 by the licensing platform ViralHog shows the same scene in higher definition (here) (timestamp 1:04-1:27). The video showing flames and smoke being blown by heavy winds is from a fire in Ohio.

A clip of a 2014 explosion at a gas station in Russia has been edited to make it appear as if a light beam was responsible for the fire. The earliest iteration Reuters could find of the unedited video was uploaded by a Russian news agency RIA Dagestan on Aug. 9, 2014 (timestamp 1:10) (youtu.be/-zvo7xXs-T0?t=72). The explosion was caused by a gas leak in the city of Makhachkala in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan, an RIA Dagestan report said (here). Reuters located the video to Prospekt Imama Shamilya, Makhachkala – the same location listed in the RIA Dagestan report (bit.ly/3saxAtT). The video has been online since at least August 2014 where no such beam can be seen before the explosion.

A video from 2018 of electrical explosions in Louisiana is being shared online as footage showing a “direct energy attack”. Direct energy weapons (DEW) are an emerging technology that uses concentrated electromagnetic energy to combat enemy forces and assets. People have claimed online that June 2023 wildfires in Canada, and August fires in Hawaii were caused by direct energy weapons. In another instance, social media users claimed a 2018 video of electrical explosions in Louisiana was evidence of DEWs in use in Hawaii (see Facebook users here), (here) and users on X, formerly known as Twitter, (here) (here). Most petrol vehicles under 16 years old and diesel vehicles under 6 years old are exempt from London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) charges, a scheme expanded in August by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to tackle air pollution.
