These regional powers are betting they can build an expendable air force without the massive costs of aircraft carriers, fighter jets and pilots trained to fly them. Naval experts agree that drone ships represent new possibilities while pointing out that these ships fall far short of the aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships that top navies sail. Turkey developed the Bayraktar TB3 naval drone for the Anadolu and claims the unmanned Kizilelma fighter jet it is developing could also operate from it. Although far from the might and versatility of flattops, these vessels enhance Turkey and Iran's respective capabilities to project naval power. These drone-carriers also have inherent shortcomings when compared to aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships in other navies.

Read previewIn recent days, Jeff Walz — the conservative older brother of the vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz — has become something of a fascination on the right. "We've just become a third world banana republic," Jeff Walz wrote that day. That generated speculation on the right that Walz's brother was prepared to reveal damning information about the Minnesota governor. Hezbollah: What weapons does it have? A visual guide
  + stars: | 2024-08-24 | by ( Lou Robinson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Though no match for Israel’s military might, Hezbollah’s increasingly sophisticated arsenal has the potential to inflict significant damage on Israel and its allies in the region. As it fought in the trenches of that nearly decade-long war, Hezbollah became seasoned in urban warfare and solidified its alliances with other Iran-backed groups fighting in Syria. Throughout its decades-long conflict with Israel, Hezbollah has been engaged in asymmetric warfare. It has sought to grow its political and military might, while seeking to establish deterrence despite Israel’s military superiority. Because of Hezbollah’s growing power, a possible all-out war between Israel and Lebanon would thrust the Middle East into uncharted waters.

Unless you’re directly touching them, you’re not going to get infected.”How does mpox spread? Mpox, previously called monkeypox, is a virus that causes fevers, headaches, muscle aches and painful, open wounds on the skin. While Covid is a respiratory virus that spreads through the air, mpox is spread from person to person through close, skin-to-skin contact with those lesions. Clade I accounts for the latest mpox strain that’s driving the outbreak in parts of Africa. “It’s not airborne,” Taylor said, adding that there is no evidence that the mpox virus is mutating or spreading in a way that would prompt school closures.

Taiwan sent its own forces to keep watch, the ministry said, using its usual wording for when China carries out such activities. China’s defense ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the latest combat patrol was related to Lai visiting Kinmen. There are no vaccines for mpox available in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicenter of a global health emergency declared last week, even though the country first asked for the shots two years ago and the manufacturers say they have supplies. “The most important thing we need right now are the vaccines,” said Dr. Samuel-Roger Kamba, health minister of Congo. They are trapped in a byzantine drug regulatory process at the World Health Organization. Three years after the last worldwide mpox outbreak, the W.H.O. still has neither officially approved the vaccines — although the United States and Europe have — nor has it issued an emergency use license that would speed access.

The U.S. government has formally endorsed former President Donald Trump’s claim that Iran hacked his campaign. “We have observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during this election cycle, specifically involving influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations targeting Presidential campaigns,” the agencies said in the statement. “This includes the recently reported activities to compromise former President Trump’s campaign, which the IC [intelligence community] attributes to Iran,” the statement continued. “The IC is confident that the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the Presidential campaigns of both political parties. The virus is classified into two distinct groups: clade I and clade II. Clade II was responsible for the 2022 outbreak, which has led to around 100,000 cases worldwide. Clade I is more transmissible than clade II and capable of being more severe, so infectious disease experts are concerned about further international spread. How does this version of mpox spread? Historically, mpox lesions have tended to appear on the face, chest, palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.

North Korea will resume international tourism this winter, ending a COVID-era ban on travelers, according to operators that organize tours to the country. This undated picture released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on November 28, 2016 shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un (C) standing among skiers in Samjiyun. The efforts could help North Korea with its economic recovery from the devastating impacts of the global pandemic. It is likely that an opening of Samjiyon is aimed at attracting Chinese travelers, who constituted the majority of international tourists visiting North Korea before the pandemic.

Iran has rejected calls to refrain from retaliatory attacks against Israel over the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, as the United States and its allies seek to avert a wider conflict in the Middle East. The U.S. has dispatched a guided missile submarine to the Middle East and sought to expedite the arrival of an aircraft carrier strike group as part of Washington’s commitment to help defend Israel from possible retaliation. Both Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for the killing. Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said on Monday night that Israel was "following Hezbollah and Iran and ready." Meanwhile, a growing number of countries have asked airlines to avoid airspace in the region, while some have also urged their citizens to leave parts of the Middle East.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government said Tuesday that it had filed a diplomatic protest against Beijing after Chinese jets flew dangerously close and fired a volley of flares in the path of a Philippine air force patrol plane over a disputed shoal in the South China Sea. The Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army said Saturday that a Philippine air force aircraft “illegally” entered the airspace above the shoal, which China claims, disrupting its combat training activities. The command sent jets and ships to identify, track and drive away the Philippine aircraft, it added. In 2013, China announced a new Air Defense Identification Zone over the East China Sea that covers a chain of disputed islands also claimed by Japan. Washington has repeatedly warned that it is obligated to defend the Philippines, its oldest treaty ally in Asia, if Filipino forces, ships and aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

PICACHO, Ariz. — How long does it take a large desert tortoise to get to the other side of a southern Arizona highway? It’s still a mystery, after a state Department of Public Safety trooper recently helped rescue an escaped sulcata tortoise that was attempting to cross Interstate 10 near Picacho. A motorist contacted authorities on July 30 to report a tortoise trying to cross the busy highway that’s halfway between Casa Grande and Tucson in Pinal County. Troopers saw the name “Stitch” labeled across the tortoise’s shell and contacted an ostrich ranch that was 3 miles away. According to the Arizona Republic, the ranch confirmed Stitch was one of it resident tortoises and had recently escaped from his habitat.

Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance on Sunday defended his 2021 comments about allocating more votes to people with children, saying they were a “thought experiment.”In a widely circulated video clip from a 2021 speech he gave to a conservative organization called the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, Vance suggested giving more votes to people with children than to people who have none. “Let’s give votes to all children in this country, but let’s give control over those votes to the parents of those children,” Vance said in his 2021 speech. “And I said, well, if we’re going to give the rights to the children, then we should actually just allow the parents to cast those votes.
