From 2011 to 2020, the percentage of Americans who reported taking a hair, skin and nail vitamin in the past month rose from 2.5% to 4.9%. "Someone died because a heart attack was missed [during testing]," Friedman explains, saying that the patient's troponin levels weren't showing any sign for concern. "They weren't elevated in this one individual who was taking a biotin supplement for hair growth." Biotin, or vitamin B7, is commonly found in most foods and multivitamins, so people rarely need supplements, anyway, says Friedman. Opera fandom is often built around a preoccupation — zealous, territorial, absolute — with distinctive voices. Maria Callas, Renée Fleming, Cecilia Bartoli, Luciano Pavarotti — they’re all immediately identifiable by timbre alone. Teatro Nuovo, the brainchild of the bel canto specialist Will Crutchfield, inverts that value system. It asks: What would happen if all of the singers onstage shared a particular school of singing and even a certain vocal quality? The singers in the two casts largely shared a vocal profile and style — a trim yet colorful sound with a quick, understated vibrato and an emphasis on legato, portamento and unaspirated coloratura.

NO CANCELLATIONS YETDemand for travel has soared again this summer as tourists leave behind years of pandemic restrictions, and travel companies say the heat hasn't caused many cancellations - yet. Stories of tourists being airlifted off Italian beaches or ferried away in ambulances from Athens' Acropolis have flooded European media in recent weeks. Italy's Environment Ministry warned in a report this year that foreign tourists would in future travel more in the spring and autumn and choose cooler destinations. Greek authorities closed Athens' ancient Acropolis during the hottest part of the day on Friday to protect tourists. In Spain, high vacation demand is expected in coastal destinations in the north of the country and on Spanish tourist islands, where summer temperatures tend to be cooler, according to a report from national tourism association Exceltur.

Trader Joe's holds a special place in the heart of many Americans, largely due to its budget-friendly prices and unique offerings like Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, Baked Lemon Ricotta and Soy Chorizo. Mercedes "Dee" Davis, an avid lover of Trader Joe's, grew a loyal following of her own after sharing her go-to products on her Instagram page. This inspired her to create an online space called "Black Girls in Trader Joe's" (BGITJ) where she shares her favorite buys from the popular supermarket chain. "The appeal for me was the uniqueness, the price point and the seasonality," Davis tells CNBC Make it. While a walk through the aisles of your local Trader Joe's can offer up a nearly endless supply of dinnertime options, there is one meal in particular that Davis says is easy to whip up for a family of four and costs $50 or less.

Pilobolus has been pushing bodies to their limits in unusual shapes and precarious balances since 1971, when its founding members met at Dartmouth College. The company’s leadership has shifted and changed over the years, but what remains is the group’s collaborative approach. The group also possesses commercial appeal despite the origins of its name: Pilobolus is a genus of fungi that grows on herbivore dung. Now under the leadership of Renée Jaworski and Matt Kent — two former company members — Pilobolus, after a pandemic delay, concludes its 50th anniversary tour with a three-week season at the Joyce Theater. Its title, the “Big Five-OH!,” has much in common with aspects of the group’s choreography, which can veer into the painfully cute.

Longevity experts Héctor García and Francesc Miralles studied the longest-living people in the world to write "Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life." While researching, they learned that there are around 300 to 450 people in the world who are aged 110 and older. "They aren't superheroes, but we could see them as such for having spent far more time on this planet than the average life expectancy would predict," wrote García and Miralles. García and Miralles went on to compile quotes from interviews they found with supercentenarians and devoted an entire chapter in their book to the wise advice. Here's what three of the supercentenarians in García and Miralles' book suggest for living a long and happy life.

Gravitating towards the activities that spark this state of "flow" can lead you to your "ikigai," which is "the happiness of always being busy," say Héctor García and Francesc Miralles, authors of Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life. Many of the world's longest-lived people find their ikigai and prioritize it nearly every day of their lives. "There is no magic recipe for finding happiness, for living according to your ikigai," wrote García and Miralles. It may seem like a good approach to see the positive in every situation, but you should be cautious that you're not spewing "toxic gratitude" to yourself and others. Simply put, toxic gratitude is when you're implementing self-gaslighting, says Elizabeth Pearson, career coach and author of "Career Confinement: How to Free Yourself, Find Your Guides, and Seize the Fire of Inspired Work." Toxic gratitude can keep you in living situations that are negatively affecting you, jobs you've overgrown and even relationships that aren't right for you, she notes. Some also said the tragic end, when it came, was precipitated by the actions of the Greek coastguard. after a Greek coastguard vessel attached a rope to the bow of the trawler and began to pull it while picking up speed. The shipping ministry, which oversees the coastguard, told Reuters it couldn't comment on issues that were the subject of a confidential and ongoing investigation by prosecutors. Nikos Spanos, a retired admiral in the Greek coastguard, told Reuters it was unlikely that a coastguard vessel would have attempted such a dangerous manoeuvre as towing the stricken trawler. Greek leftist leader Tsipras resigns as Syriza party leader
  + stars: | 2023-06-29 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
ATHENS, June 29 (Reuters) - Alexis Tsipras, the one-time leftist firebrand who stormed to power on an anti-austerity agenda in Greece in 2015, stepped down from the helm of the Syriza party after 15 years on Thursday, following a heavy election defeat. At the height of Greece's deep economic crisis, Tsipras, known for sporting his no-tie look, rode a wave of anti-establishment anger to become the country's first leftist prime minister. "The time has come to start a new cycle," Tsipras said in a televised address announcing his resignation. Tsipras said he would not be a candidate at elections for a new party leader. Tsipras' decision to step down was "sudden", a party source said, but also "the right one for the party's reform and for his own legacy".
