The outage was attributed to CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm whose software is used by scores of industries around the world to protect against hackers and outside breaches. At least three major U.S. airlines, American, United and Delta, grounded all flights, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, one day after a major outage at Microsoft briefly grounded some flights. “A global technical outage has impacted some airplane operations and terminal services,” the airport said on social media. Disruptions were also reported at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and Dubai International Airport. CNN —Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira, who in March pleaded guilty in a civilian court to willfully retaining and leaking classified intelligence, is now facing charges in military court, the Air Force announced. Teixeira — who was arrested last April after allegedly sharing classified intelligence on the social media platform Discord — is being charged with disobeying a direct order and obstructing justice under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, an Air Force spokesperson said. The Air Force requested the new charges against Teixeira in May and the charges were officially referred on July 2. CNN has previously reported that three internal Air Force memos revealed multiple instances in which his leadership observed and warned that he was inappropriately accessing classified information. His court martial trial will be held at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, the Air Force spokesperson said, but the date has yet to be determined.

The $44.6 million stegosaurus, the most valuable fossil ever sold at auction, wasn’t the only thing that caught the attention of viewers mesmerized by a 15-minute bidding war at Sotheby’s on Wednesday. Around 10 a.m., Ms. Kao, a vice president of client strategy for Sotheby’s, started the bidding at $3 million with a cool lean on the podium. “Emily draws blood first,” Ms. Kao says of an early bid of $3.8 million in a captivating video. Wearing a gray Armani jacket, with her dark hair twisted up and pinned back in a pony tail, Ms. Kao supported herself on her forearm and steadied her gaze toward the bidders like an opponent challenging a rival. Seven bidders held phones to their ears, relaying offers for the bones from buyers around the world.

MSNBC’s prime-time coverage of the Republican National Convention has featured a typical TV tableau: anchors at a desk perched high above the convention floor, pontificating as the starred-and-striped political pomp unfolds below. But Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace, Jen Psaki, Joy Reid and the rest of MSNBC’s A-list anchor team have not been inside the convention hall. They were not even in Milwaukee. Instead, they were broadcasting from a studio in Midtown Manhattan, as a live feed of the convention floor was projected onto an LED screen behind them.

Giuliani only appears to have a portion of that amount in his personal bank account, which keeps being depleted to pay other bills, Wednesday’s federal court proceedings in White Plains, New York, revealed. Giuliani has been slow to disclose what cash he has on hand in liquid accounts, and hasn’t been fully transparent, the judge has found. Last Friday, Giuliani’s bankruptcy protection ended, and creditors such as the 2020 election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss are now able to pursue his $10 million net worth. He told Giuliani’s lawyers they had until Thursday at “high noon; that’s appropriately theatrical” to notify the court of a plan for Giuliani to resolve his bills. “If your client persists in this course of action, there are a lot of bad things that can happen,” Lane told Giuliani’s attorneys on Wednesday.

“Gen Z boss and a mini”? If you can think of two catchy descriptors that encapsulate your outfit and unique aura, you’ve got enough material to get in on the latest TikTok style trend. Not only was it my job to teach students how to write a college-level essay, but I also found myself taking on another role. I involuntarily became a college student life coach of sorts. Mostly, they were ill-prepared to be a college student — yet their parents and teachers expected them to "act their age." Problem-solvingWhen in high school, many of my college students were used to Mommy or Daddy stepping in on their behalf, managing any issues that would arise. Once in college, students are suddenly expected to navigate their needs independently.

CNN —A unique plant has become the first species in the United States to be exterminated from the wild by the compounding effects of rising seas, scientists say. The Key Largo tree cactus still exists in parts of the Caribbean, including Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, but the chances of it re-establishing naturally in the Florida Keys is basically “zero,” Gann said. The plant’s habitat was being swamped by saltwater from storms and high tides worsened by the rising sea. Sea levels around the Florida Keys have been rising by around an average 0.16 inches a year, or just over 8 inches since 1971, the researchers reported. Possley said more than 1-in-4 native plant species are critically threatened with regional extinction in South Florida.

A new bifurcation in strong labor market"What we are experiencing now is a bit of a bifurcation of the labor market. Schelling says the 2024 job market for grads is strong, but focusing too much on degree attainment alone is a mistake. Some labor market experts see burdensome application requirements among the undercurrents roiling an already difficult job market for grads. In the end, he says a grad's job market's prospects will vary depending on where they are, what they are applying for, and what they want.

What to Expect as a Punishing Heat Wave Shifts East

A heat wave that broke dozens of temperature records across the American Southwest will shift to more of the country this weekend, with heat peaking in the Northeast early next week. Some East Coast cities, including Baltimore and Washington, D.C., will experience temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. That won’t necessarily break records, as Las Vegas and many other Western cities did last week. “What we want people to be prepared for is the hot daytime temperatures, and the temperatures that don’t really cool off that much at night,” said Richard Bann, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. That can be especially stressful for people who don’t have a good way to keep cool or aren’t staying hydrated, he said.

A double whammyFor aspiring homebuyers such as Burress, the combination of high mortgage rates and rising list prices has left them feeling boxed out. The 30-year mortgage rate, a popular option for home financing in the U.S., has bounced around 7% for the past several months. Given this, co-author Jonah Coste said current owners touting these low mortgage rates are undoubtedly better off than those looking to buy a first home today. After welcoming three kids, they're holding off on a fourth until mortgage rates or home prices come down enough to upsize. To be clear, mortgage rates tend to follow the path of Fed-set interest levels, but they aren't the same thing.

Some of this stems from the belief that AI benefits workers with greater task-based responsibilities versus the broader job responsibilities of higher-level workers (with many experts saying AI is nearly at the level of a good intern). Still, 30% of senior-level employees fear they'll be fired for lacking AI skills, according to a recent report from online tutoring company Preply. Experienced employees can master AI insightsDespite the general stereotype that older workers (who often make up the senior-level echelon) have a harder time adapting to new technology, Preston recognizes that these are the workers for whom AI has unique advantages. "It would be easy to write off older workers and say this is just going to be too hard for them, they're not going to adapt," Preston said. "Let's lean into the value of AI to help leverage the jobs of the future for older workers, rather than assuming that for some reason, it's going to leave them behind."
