In Martha Diamond’s Art, She Took Manhattan
  + stars: | 2024-04-11 | by ( Jonathan Griffin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Martha Diamond, who died in December, at age 79, was remarkably consistent in her subject matter — namely New York architecture — but extraordinarily wide-ranging with what a painting of a building could signify. In some of the works displayed in her first show at the David Kordansky Gallery, “Martha Diamond: Skin of the City,” it seems as if her only concern was for color; in others, abstract form takes over. In a painting such as “New York With Purple No. 3” (2000), the tall buildings appear to evaporate into the busy sky, architectural solidity succumbing to shimmering atmosphere and dappled, springtime light. Diamond’s paintings may have been of New York, her muse since she settled into a loft on the Bowery in 1969, but they are about so much more besides.

In a 2022 survey by Apartment List, a quarter of millennials said they expected to rent forever. And housing experts say that when it comes to homeownership, millennials are the most screwed generation. "Millennials have a much different mindset on life in general than the generation before us," Muller told me. But millennials' housing misfortunes go beyond personal spending habits; they entered adulthood at a terrible time for the housing market. At the same time the housing market was soaring out of control during the pandemic, people were spending more time at home.

Renaissance Portraits That Played Hide and Seek
  + stars: | 2024-04-11 | by ( Karen Rosenberg | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Met’s delightful show “Hidden Faces: Covered Portraits of the Renaissance” illuminates a curious trend in 15th- and 16th-century painting: the slow reveal. The works on view, originally concealed in special cases and behind sliding or reversible panels, gamify the experience of looking at portraiture; they have to be moved, before they can move us. But we can peer at them from double-sided glass cases and watch animations of faces emerging from sliding panels. The covers are marvelous works in their own right, with elaborate emblems and allegories that are themselves a form of representation. The interactions between the different components can be quite playful, with a literary and theatrical flair.

CNN —For a brief moment, one German man achieved his dream: his artwork hanging in a famous museum. After security discovered the newest addition to the museum’s collections, they promptly took down the display and the man was fired. “The supervisors notice something like this immediately,” Tine Nehler told Süddeutsche Zeitung. This means that the public prosecutor’s office will now decide what happens,” Christian Drexler, chief superintendent of the Munich Police, told CNN. The man was banned from the museum as part of his termination agreement, Süddeutsche Zeitung reported.

Unfortunately for the worker’s burgeoning art career, the ruse was discovered and the painting was removed from the wall. The museum and the worker agreed to part ways, the museum said. The man, a well-respected employee that the museum did not identify, was also banned from visiting his old workplace, the museum added. Adding to the aspiring artist’s troubles, the police said on Wednesday that they were investigating him for property damage — for drilling two small holes in the museum wall to hang his painting. The Pinakothek der Moderne has one of Germany’s largest art collections, with more than 20,000 pieces of art, including works by prominent artists like Max Beckmann and Pablo Picasso.

Who gets to buy a Birkin bag?

(CNN) — It’s so hard to get your hands on an Hermès Birkin bag that it should be illegal. Hermès’ ultra-exclusive positioning has meant Birkin sales have continued to overperform in the market even as most other luxury brands see demand slowing from post-pandemic highs. A scarcity-driven distribution model has helped drive desire for Birkins, as well as more broadly fuel Hermès’ business. Saroyan Humphrey/WWD/Getty ImagesThe lawsuit alleges shoppers are required to buy ancillary products (items like scarves, pillows or shoes) before being allowed to purchase a Birkin handbag. Presumably, the plaintiffs could buy a Birkin from The RealReal even if they can’t from Hermès directly.

The campaign described Mr. Assange as a “political prisoner” and asked supporters to sign a petition urging the United States to drop the charges against him.
