Apple saw a sharp uptick in global PC market share for the second quarter of 2023, recovering from weak delivery numbers in the preceding period, according to data from IDC. The news comes amid a broadly weakening PC market. Apple's Mac computers now account for 8.6% of global market share, as the company shipped 5.3 million Mac units in the second quarter alone. That number is still markedly down relative to the quarter a year ago, which had 4.8 million Mac shipments total. It's a decline mirrored by the broader market, which experienced a total fall of 13.4% in PC shipments year over year, from 71.1 million units to 61.6 million units, according to IDC.

The world's largest memory chip and smartphone maker estimated its operating profit fell to 600 billion won ($459 million) in April-June, from 14.1 trillion won a year earlier in a short preliminary earnings statement. It would be Samsung's lowest profit for any quarter since a 590 billion won profit in the first quarter of 2009, according to company data. Shares in Samsung fell 1.4% in early morning trade, underperforming a 0.6% drop in the wider market (.KS11). In the January-March quarter, the company reported a whopping 4.58 trillion won loss in its chip business as memory chip prices fell further and its inventory values were slashed. Revenue in April to June likely fell 22% from the same period a year earlier to 60 trillion won, Samsung said in the statement.

SEOUL, July 6 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics' (005930.KS) June-quarter profit is expected to plunge 96% on-year to the lowest for any quarter in more than 14 years, as a chip glut continues to drive large losses in the tech giant's cash cow business despite a supply cut. If so, it would be Samsung's lowest profit since the fourth quarter of 2008, when Samsung Electronics reported a consolidated operating loss of about 740 billion won. It compares with an operating profit of 14.1 trillion won in the April-June quarter last year. This is because its chip division, traditionally its biggest earner, likely reported quarterly losses of around 3 trillion to 4 trillion won as memory chip prices fell further and its inventory values were slashed. Despite the current downturn, Samsung is working to increase its share of chip demand from the exploding field of artificial intelligence (AI), such as with high bandwidth memory (HBM) and chip contract manufacturing, they said.

Each previous incarnation of a headset that immerses the wearer in a virtual world (called virtual reality, or VR) or lets wearers see their surroundings with virtual objects overlaid on them (augmented reality, or AR) started with overhyped expectations only to flame out. I am also doing my doctoral research on the history of virtual and augmented reality (known together as “extended reality”). These apps will be available to Vision Pro users as well. But in a statement on April 8 last year, the company said: "Due to recent developments, Acer has decided to suspend its business in Russia." It represents years of research and the first major Apple product launched without the guiding hand and showmanship of the late Steve Jobs (if one doesn't count the Apple AirPods or Watch as major new products, and I do not.) And the Vision Pro isn't likely to have one either. HP Inc. CEO Enrique Lores told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday that artificial intelligence will fundamentally change the personal computer industry, especially his own company. "We think there is really an opportunity to create a new category of PCs that will drive significant refresh in the category," Lores said. Lores said the company is creating AI-enabled PCs that will allow customers to build spreadsheets and analyze data in record time. "I have been in this industry for many, many years, Jim," Lores told Cramer. "I have never seen an opportunity like this, to really drive innovation and drive new type of customer needs that we really think are going to be fundamental."
