The darkened sky stretches over miles of desert sand as in the distance, from an illuminated scaffold, the object rises that will change the world. The first atomic test is the defining scene in “Oppenheimer,” which won seven Academy Awards on Sunday night, including best picture. Watching the film on opening weekend, I found the scene excruciating, even though history had long since recorded the outcome. “Oppenheimer” is a movie about a singular genius, an extraordinary collaboration and a turning point in history. An innovation designed to make the world safer in the long term made it manifestly more dangerous.

The 96th Academy Awards bowed on Sunday with a return to tradition: The red carpet was, well, red. A year after Hollywood’s stars made their way across a champagne-colored rug, and several months after work stoppages led by actors’ and writers’ unions came to an end, they were greeted once again by the familiar décor. And judging by the bright smiles captured by our photographer, Sinna Nasseri, who was on hand at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, those in attendance were in the mood to celebrate. Reddit: The social media firm plans to raise up to $748 million through its upcoming initial public offering, Bloomberg News reported. "I think Reddit, if they place the deal correctly with Redditors, will go higher," Jim Cramer said, noting Morgan Stanley is one of the investment banks working on the deal. In discussing the deal, Cramer shined a spotlight on Coterra Energy, an oil-and-gas firm in the Club's portfolio. "I think Coterra is a stock that can go to $35 [per share] without an issue," Cramer said.

That was supposed to happen this year, when monster hits "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" were both up for multiple awards, including Best Picture. And the producers for ABC's broadcast smartly leaned into it, by doing things like bringing in "Barbie" nominee Ryan Gosling to sing and dance, to general acclaim. On the other hand: That means this year's telecast still drew considerably less than the 23.6 million viewers who watched the 2020 show, which didn't have anything like "Barbie" or "Oppenheimer," box-office-wise. Back then, a couple of the Best Picture nominees were ones regular folks may have seen in theaters, including "Ford V. Ferrari" and "Joker."

Famed chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck spoke to CNN's Elizabeth Wagmeister on the red carpet a short time ago. He's the man behind the menu at the exclusive Governors Ball, the lavish after-party held after each Academy Awards. Some of the night's biggest stars will feast on smoked salmon, macaroni and cheese, mushroom risotto with truffles, Peking duck and much more, Puck said. He also told Wagmeister about some of his favorite interactions with A-listers, including the time actor Joaquin Phoenix stepped into the kitchen to enjoy his meal with the staff, and the time Julia Roberts kissed the chefs as she exited through the kitchen. Legendary funny-man Bill Murray also made an appearance on one occasion, throwing steak salt everywhere.

Netflix received a single award, for director Wes Anderson's 39-minute live action short, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar." On Feb. 23, John Richards traveled more than 100 miles to place bets on the Oscars. He took a train from Washington, D.C., to Wilmington, Del., and then hopped into an Uber car to take him to a truck stop in New Jersey. Mr. Richards, a 40-year-old statistician at Red Carpet Rosters, a fantasy league site for film awards, has been betting on the Oscars since 2016. Before his trip to the New Jersey truck stop, he had already wagered $2,750 on this year’s awards. In the United States, where gambling is regulated at the state level, seven states allow Oscar betting: Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan and New Jersey.
