How much worse can China's economic slowdown get?
  + stars: | 2023-08-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
HONG KONG, Aug 15 (Reuters) - China's economic activity data for July, including retail sales, industrial output and investment failed to match expectations, fuelling concern over a deeper, longer-lasting slowdown in growth. THE DEMISE OF CHINA'S GROWTH HAS BEEN MISTAKENLY FORECAST BEFORE. Alarm bells over growth rang during the global financial crisis in 2008-09 and during a capital outflow scare in 2015. If it persists, deflation could exacerbate the economic slowdown and deepen debt problems. There is also uncertainty about China's appetite for large fiscal stimulus, given the high levels of municipal debt.

LONDON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Legal & General (LGEN.L) reported a forecast-beating operating profit of 941 million pounds ($1.20 billion) in the first half on Tuesday, boosted by its bulk annuity business, and said it was on track to meet its five-year ambitions. Analysts in a company-compiled consensus poll had forecast operating profit for the British life insurer and asset manager of 834 million pounds. Operating profit fell nearly 2% from a year earlier but analysts at Jefferies said they expected the results to be "well received" on Tuesday. British specialist insurer Just Group (JUSTJ.L) reported a 154% jump in first-half profit on Tuesday, also beating market estimates, boosted by bumper sales of its retirement income products and higher new business income. REUTERS/Tingshu Wang/File PhotoSHANGHAI/SINGAPORE, Aug 14 (Reuters) - China's central bank is expected to keep rates on its medium-term policy loans unchanged on Tuesday, a Reuters survey showed, despite fresh signs the economic recovery is losing momentum. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) last lowered the rate by 10 basis points to 2.65% in June. "We believe more pro-growth policies are warranted to support the economic growth, and further easing in monetary policy can be expected," analysts at BofA Global Research said. They expect a 15-basis-point cut in one-year loan prime rate (LPR) in total in the third quarter of the year.

Annual consumer price inflation is expected to show a sharp rebound in July to 6.40% from 4.8%, and a slowdown in wholesale price deflation to -2.4% from -4.1%. Investors and the Bank of Japan, meanwhile, will be paying close attention to Japanese inflation data later in the week. Asian stocks have badly underperformed this year, largely due to worries over China which is battling weak growth, deflation, and capital outflows. The MSCI Asia ex-Japan equity index index has now fallen two weeks in a row for the first time since April, and is up only twice in the last eight weeks. BRUSSELS, Aug 10 (Reuters) - The European Commission will analyse the U.S. ban on new U.S. investment in China in sensitive technologies as the issue is also important to the European Union's economic security, the EU executive said on Thursday. U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed an executive order to prohibit or restrict U.S. investments in Chinese entities in three sectors: semiconductors and microelectronics, quantum information technologies and certain artificial intelligence systems. "We will be analysing the Executive Order closely. We are in close contact with the US administration and look forward to continued cooperation on this topic," a Commission spokesperson said in an email. U.S. bank shares dropped on Tuesday after ratings agency Moody's downgraded credit ratings of several U.S. regional lenders and placed some banking giants on review for potential downgrade. It warned lenders will find it harder to make money as interest rates remain high, funding costs climb and a potential recession looms. The warning caught some investors off guard. On Tuesday, SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF's (KRE.P) options-based 30-day implied volatility rose to 31.1%, up from 28.9% touched on Monday. "In the near term, there are reasons for caution about banks in general and we have made changes where appropriate," he said.

High yield mutual funds and exchange traded funds saw inflows of $1.9 billion in July, Barclays said, citing Lipper data. High yield bonds are corporate issues that are rated below BBB, meaning they have a higher risk of default compared to their investment-grade counterparts. "When we are in junk and high yield names, we prefer loans – more senior loan positions rather than high yield." Novak added outside of high yield loans, the firm's other big fixed income play is higher quality investment grade bonds. "We don't think taking a heroic position [in high yield] makes a whole lot of sense in our view," he said.

CNN —Moody’s on Monday evening downgraded 10 US banks and put the credit ratings of six others on review, an indication that the agency could also eventually downgrade those institutions. Some investors say that while the Moody’s downgrade isn’t groundbreaking, it’s a reminder that the economy, and markets, still have challenges ahead. Moody’s downgraded Commerce Bank, BOK Financial, M&T Bank, Old National Bank, Prosperity Bank, Amarillo National Bank, Webster Financial, Fulton Financial, Pinnacle Financial and Associated Bank. China's July exports, imports fall much faster than expected

REUTERS/Aly Song/File Photo/File PhotoBEIJING, Aug 8 (Reuters) - China's exports fell 14.5% in July year-on-year, while imports contracted 12.4%, customs data showed on Tuesday, in the biggest decline in outbound shipments from the world's second-largest economy since February 2020. A Reuters poll of economists had forecast a 12.5% fall in exports and a 5.0% drop in imports. China's economy grew at a sluggish pace in the second quarter as demand weakened at home and abroad, prompting top leaders to promise further policy support at a meeting of the Politburo last month. South Korean exports to China fell 25.1% in July from a year earlier, the sharpest decline in three months. China's trade surplus grew by $80.6 billion, beating a forecast of $70.6 billion in the poll.

Right now, the S & P 500 is only 2.4% off its closing high on July 31. You'd think the stock market run would kill the big inflows into money market funds that happened in the first half of the year, but you'd be wrong. Money market inflows reaccelerated last week: $21 billion worth of inflows were added, according to Goldman Sachs. U.S. money market fund assets hit $6.7 trillion, the highest level in more than 13 years. There have been renewed inflows into energy, which is on a tear due to tighter oil supplies, and the equal-weight S & P 500 ( RSP ), all signs that the "broadening out" story is still alive.

A gentle downtrend in foreign direct investment gave way to a steep drop last quarter and inflows to China slammed to their lowest since records began 25 years ago, raising the prospect that the long-term trend is turning. Sources have told Reuters the Biden administration is likely to adopt new outbound investment restrictions on China in the coming weeks. Japan, the U.S. and Europe have already restricted the sale of high-tech chipmaking tools to Chinese companies while China has hit back by throttling exports of raw materials. To be sure, investment flows often fluctuate and many firms aren't leaving China completely or aren't leaving at all. Bitcoin is up more than 75% this year, but the market capitalization for stablecoins has dwindled during the same period. "This is unusual as often the market capitalization of stablecoin increases during rallies and decreases during downturns, matching the trend of the overall crypto market," JPMorgan analyst Steven Alexopoulos said in a note Thursday. "An explanation for the decline of the stablecoin market may be due to investors preferring the higher returns of bitcoin and Ethereum or even traditional assets (benefiting from a rise in interest rates)." In July, it hit an all-time high of $83.8 billion and now accounts for 68.5% of the overall stablecoin market. Tether's prominence Instead of focusing on declines in USDC, investors could point to Tether's growth as evidence of stablecoin inflows, for example.

Money market funds — which are different than money market deposit accounts — are a type of mutual fund that typically invests in shorter-term, lower-credit-risk debt, such as Treasury bills. Ukraine launched a sea drone strike on a Russian naval ship near the port of Novorossiysk. The port of Novorossiysk is home to a Russian navy base and exports about 600,000 barrels of oil a day. After the drone attack, wheat futures jumped as much as 3.5% Friday morning, while Brent crude futures rose 0.6%. The attack was preceded by a number of Russian assaults on Kyiv's grain export infrastructure these past weeks, such as Wednesday drone strike on Ukraine's primary inland port on the Danube River. Meanwhile, Ukraine's drone strike adds a new threat to Russia's commodity outflows, which are already limited Western sanctions and price caps.

ISTANBUL, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Turkey's banking watchdog has stopped allowing credit card payments by instalment for foreign travel, such as flights, travel agency fees and accommodation, in a step seen dealing a blow to foreign travel operators. The move, which hit airline shares and was seen as curbing foreign currency outflows, was one of two measures announced by the BDDK watchdog late on Monday, which it said were among coordinated steps to strengthen financial stability. "The logic (of the step) is 'citizens shouldn't go abroad and spend foreign currency'," he said, adding that the foreign travel sector was also being hit by increasing difficulties faced by Turks in securing tourist visas. The credit card move also had an impact on airline share prices, with Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS) dipping 1.3% and the airline Pegasus (PGSUS.IS) dropping 2.3%. Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency which aim to keep a constant value and are usually backed by traditional assets such as dollars. Tether's reserves report, signed off by accountants BDO Italia, says Tether's assets rose to $86.5 billion in the three months to June 30, 2023, up 5.7% from the previous quarter and a record high, according to previous reports on its website. Tether is a key cog in global digital asset trading, with many crypto-to-crypto trades denominated in the stablecoin. U.S. regulators have warned banks that stablecoin reserves could be subject to rapid outflows, for example if holders rushed to exchange such tokens back into traditional currency. Tether's holdings of U.S. Treasury Bills hit $55.8 billion, up 5.2% from the end of March, while non-U.S. Treasury Bills rose to $62.9 million, up more than 30% from the previous quarter, the report said.
