Meta did not attribute the network of fake Facebook accounts to a particular entity in China. It’s the latest in a series of warnings from tech firms documenting how Chinese propaganda and influence operations have more aggressively targeted American audiences in the last year. It wasn’t clear, Meta said in a report on foreign online threats published Thursday, what the Chinese network of fake accounts was trying to accomplish. While Meta and other tech firms tout their work to protect elections, recent moves by the company also show trends in the other direction. And Meta this month said it would allow political ads on its platforms to question the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election.

House Republicans appear poised to ramp up their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, facing headwinds amid resistance to comply with the inquiry from the White House. Three House committees have been investigating whether the president benefited from any of his son Hunter Biden’s overseas business activities, as well as probing other allegations of wrongdoing. But White House counsel has questioned the committees’ legal standing and stymied their path forward as they’ve sought to subpoena the Biden family and others without a chamber-wide vote to formally open the inquiry. The letter notes that Republicans notably made the same argument when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unilaterally opened an impeachment inquiry against former President Donald Trump. Meta revealed on Tuesday more details about its policies on political ads, including a mandate that advertisers disclose when they use artificial intelligence to alter images and videos in certain political ads. Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, explained the new ad policies in a blog post, characterizing them as "broadly consistent" with how the social networking giant has typically handled advertising rules during previous election cycles. What's different for the upcoming election season, however, is the increasing use of AI technologies by advertisers to create computer-generated visuals and text. Expanding on a previous announcement by Meta in early November, Clegg said that starting next year, Meta will require advertisers to disclose whether they have used AI or related digital editing techniques "to create or alter a political or social issue ad in certain cases." Meta will also block new political, electoral and social issue ads during the final week of the U.S. elections, which Clegg said was consistent with previous years.
