But in this political climate, any Republican speaker who has to rely on Democratic votes is critically weakened and probably can’t last long. WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing a likely roadblock from House Republicans on aid for Ukraine, President Joe Biden said Wednesday he’s planning to give a major speech on the issue and suggested there may be “another means” to provide support for Kyiv if Congress continues to balk. White House officials declined to say when Biden planned to give his speech. The president did not elaborate on the alternate method he was looking at to get additional military aid to Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia. After Biden spoke, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during the Wednesday news briefing that Biden was “confident” Ukraine aid would approved because there is broad bipartisan support. But she noted the objections by some House Republicans were an obstacle to the United States' work with allies to support Ukraine, which Russia invaded in February 2022.

But after two Republican speakers were threatened with and ultimately left office over the move, Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed a rule change that required a majority of the conference to support a motion to vacate. On Tuesday, the House voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as speaker. As it stands, Rep. Steve Scalise is still the majority leader, Rep. Tom Emmer is the majority whip, and Rep. Elise Stefanik serves as the Republican conference chairman. He'll face off against Rep. Jim Jordan, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, as well as Oklahoma Rep. Kevin Hern. Guy Reschenthaler, the GOP's chief deputy whip, also declared his desire on Wednesday to replace Emmer as whip if given the opportunity. Rep. Don Bacon told reporters that he would "love" to remove Gaetz from the House GOP caucus. Many House GOP members were not happy about it, some going so far as to come after Gaetz's place in the party caucus. In an op-ed to the Post, former GOP Representative and Speaker Newt Gingrich also called on House Republicans to remove Gaetz. As for what Gaetz feels about it all, he told the Post that Republicans should let him know "when they have the votes" to expel him. This isn't the first time moderate House GOP members have found Gaetz and his Freedom Caucus a pain to the party.
