Like a patient with a virus, incoming data appears to blow hot and cold at the same time. Private sector and full national snapshots of payroll growth for May are due later today and on Friday. But a renewed rise in U.S. staff vacancies in April showed the labor market tightening again if anything - even a Chicago manufacturing survey alarmed with a sharp contraction in factory activity last month. The central bank's "Beige Book" on economic conditions said on Wednesday that the labor market "continued to be strong" in May "with contacts reporting difficulty finding workers across a wide range of skill levels and industries." U.S. Treasury yields crept back up on Thursday after the debt ceiling vote overnight and despite the mixed economic picture.

PagerDuty reported adjusted earnings per share that beat Wall Street's estimates, but issued weaker-than-expected revenue guidance. The electric vehicle charging stock beat Wall Street's earnings expectations but shared light guidance for the current quarter that was below consensus estimates. SentinelOne — SentinelOne shares cratered 34% after the bell as the cybersecurity company cut its revenue guidance and fell short of Wall Street's revenue expectations in the most recent period.

Stock futures inched higher in overnight trading as traders looked ahead to Friday's May jobs report. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 31 points, or 0.09%, while S&P 500 futures added 0.08%. The Senate passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling late Thursday night, sending the bill to President Joe Biden's desk. With much of the debt ceiling drama in the rear-view mirror, investor attention pivots toward Friday's jobs report. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect that growth eased in May over the previous month, with 190,000 jobs added versus the 253,000 gained in April.

Why does Wall Street expect a rate hike in June?
  + stars: | 2023-05-28 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —Wall Street expects the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in June. Not only that, it finally believes the central bank when it says it likely won’t cut rates this year. Futures traders expected a roughly 66% chance of a quarter point rate hike in June as of Friday afternoon, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. That’s a drastic about-face from even earlier this month, when Wall Street expected the central bank to slash rates multiple times this year starting as early as this summer. “If it comes in hotter than expected, it almost locks a rate hike in” for June, said Heppenstall.

The women told local outlets they were fired two weeks after reporting a robbery to police. "We didn't really feel very protected or know what else to do," Rogers told local TV station 11Alive. The former employees said they are working through how to deal with the sudden firing financially, and hope Lululemon considers changing the policy. Company policy shared with Insider further indicates the women were likely fired for recording and interacting with the robbers, rather than for calling the police.
Ben Francis didn't become wealthy through a family inheritance or business school connections. Originally, Francis and co-founder Lewis Morgan launched Gymshark as a website selling fitness supplements, he told CNBC Make It in 2021. "CEO was not the right role for me when I was in my early 20s," Francis told CNBC Make It. "Just because I'd started a business that had grown very quickly didn't mean I was the most competent chief exec." "I really think Gymshark can be the U.K.'s answer to those brands," Francis told CNBC Make It.
"The overhangs on the market this year [are] the debt ceiling negotiation, hawkish Fed commentary and a banking crisis. It appears we are going to get a debt ceiling deal over the weekend, which should help the market to stabilize." The problem for many on the Street is the action in the S & P 500 Tech Index, up more than 5% this week; the Nasdaq Composite , ahead about 2.5%; and the S & P 500 , with a 0.3% gain, masks so much weakness beneath the surface. The S & P 500 consumer staples, materials, health care and utilities were all down between 2.4% and 3.2% this week, and the Dow Industrials were lower 1%. Although the S & P 500 is 9.5% higher so far in 2023, only a few stocks are doing well. "
Here's the big key from retailers this earnings season: Margins are holding up and that's driving earnings beats even amid more tepid sales trends. That's all led to a rather lackluster round of retail sales this earnings season. Retailers have avoided heavy discounting We haven't seen many mentions this season of retailers resorting to steep markdowns despite more tepid shopping trends. Lower freight and shipping costs Another major pandemic cost driver was elevated transportation costs for retailers. Abercrombie & Fitch saw gross margin improvement "primarily driven by a benefit of 760 basis points from lower freight costs ."

Investors should focus on the long-term story in the lithium investing landscape, not the volatile price swings seen in recent months. Moves in China are driving changes in the global market for lithium as demand for electric vehicles increases, said Keybanc analyst Aleksey Yefremov. DeYoe reiterated his buy rating on Canadian producer Sigma Lithium earlier this month, calling it "the next big thing in lithium." Among the biggest names: Global X has a Lithium & Battery Tech ETF , Sprott has a Lithium Miners ETF and Horizons Global has a Lithium Producers Index ETF . "That's going to be quite a challenge, if we don't literally right now start digging up and finding sites for lithium," Langan said.
Andreas Halvorsen's Viking Global Investors took new positions in Lululemon Athletica and Sherwin-Williams in the first quarter, according to the hedge fund's latest 13F filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Fellow hedge fund manager Dan Sundheim of DQ Capital Partners dumped his entire holding in Sherwin-Williams in the first quarter. A 46% increase to Halvorsen's McKesson stake put the stock in the number two slot among his biggest holdings, at $1.14 billion. Of Halvorsen's top 10 holdings, all were increased stakes in the quarter besides Amazon, which was cut almost 40%. Correction: A previous version misstated Viking Global's actions in the first quarter as a result of an incorrect quarterly comparison.
Dan Sundheim's D1 Capital Partners bet on PNC Financial Services as turmoil unraveled across banks in the first quarter. The hedge fund, founded in 2018, opened a $43-million stake in the Pittsburgh-based regional bank in the first quarter, which saw the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March, according to securities filings. D1 also made new bets on the healthcare sector, opening new positions in UnitedHealth and Danaher , and a stake worth at least $314 million in Elevance Health . While technology stocks rebounded during the first quarter, and investors gravitated back toward beaten-up growth stocks as bonds yields offered some relief, D1 reduced its exposure to some popular names. D1 managed roughly $27.6 billion in assets at the end of March, according to securities filings.

May 9 (Reuters) - Under Armour Inc (UAA.N) forecast annual sales and profit below Wall Street expectations on Tuesday in a sign that persistent inflation was hampering demand and higher discounts were eating into profit margins, sending its shares down 5% before the bell. Footwear sales jumped 27%, while apparel rose just 1% and accessories fell 1%. The company expects fiscal 2024 net sales to be flat to slightly up, compared with analysts expectations of 3.7% growth. Under Armour also expects diluted earnings per share to be between 47 cents and 51 cents in 2024. Its net revenue rose 7.5% to about $1.40 billion in the quarter ended March 31 compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.36 billion.
May 9 (Reuters) - Under Armour Inc (UAA.N) forecast annual sales and profit below Wall Street expectations on Tuesday in a sign that stubborn inflation was discouraging shoppers from spending on its athletic clothes and footwear. The company expects fiscal 2024 net sales to be flat to slightly up, compared with analysts expectations of 3.7% growth. Under Armour also expects diluted earnings per share to be between 47 cents and 51 cents in 2024. Analysts were expecting a profit of 61 cents, according to Refinitiv data. The company drove higher sales, in part, by offering lower prices. The company's Chief Financial Officer David Bergman chalked up the margin decline to higher promotions as Under Armour marked down merchandise from prior seasons and sold it through off-price retail. The company said it expects margins will still be under pressure as higher promotions outweigh lower freight costs. Simeon Siegel, a retail analyst for BMO Capital Markets, said the pandemic gave retailers a chance to press the reset button. As of the end of the quarter, Under Armour had nearly $1.2 billion in inventory, up 44% year over year.
This weekend, athleisure giant lululemon is hosting a dupe swap at the Century City Mall in Los Angeles. Call it recession-core or Gen Z’s anti-consumerism sentiments, but #dupe has amassed more than 3.5 billion views on TikTok. Before, finding knock offs was a lowkey way to way to find affinity to a luxury brand. Lulu has been “hyper aware” of dupe culture, its Chief Brand Officer Nikki Neuburger said in an interview with CNN Business. Though lululemon may be leading in dupe hashtags on TikTok, the Align line that began in 2015 remains its top seller, the company said.
The shops, called Market by Macy's and Bloomie's, are about one-fifth of the size of the retailer's typical Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores. It has not announced the locations of the four Market by Macy's stores, but said the additional Bloomie's store will be in Seattle. By opening the strip-mall shops, the retailer could steal business away from its larger namesake mall stores. Market by Macy's stores have worked best in shopping centers with grocery anchors or stores such as off-mall retailers that draw traffic, Mastronardi said. Melissa Repko | CNBCInside of Market by Macy's, shoppers find a narrower mix of merchandise than in the mall stores.
Consumers across all income levels are pulling back on spending, according to a Barclays Capital promotions tracker, prompting analyst Adrienne Yih to downgrade a host of retail stocks.
