Israeli troops on Wednesday entered Gaza's largest hospital, searching for traces of Hamas inside and beneath the facility. Officials from Israel and Gaza presented different accounts of what was happening at Al Shifa Hospital. Hamas and Gaza health officials deny militants operate in Al Shifa — a hospital that employs some 1,500 people and has more than 500 beds, according to the Palestinian news agency. Throughout days of fighting in the surrounding streets, there has been no report of militants firing from inside Al Shifa. The AP could not independently verify the Israeli claims that the weapons were found inside the hospital.

Jerusalem CNN —Israel has dropped leaflets across parts of southern Gaza calling on civilians to evacuate and “head towards known shelters,” indicating Israel could soon expand its ground operation against Hamas to the south of the enclave. Respecting the instructions of the IDF will prevent you, the civilians, being exposed to harm,” the leaflet read. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Tuesday that Hamas had lost control in northern Gaza, including Gaza City, which has become the epicenter of Israel’s ground offensive. “We are in control of the entire area above and below ground in the northern Gaza Strip, and especially in Gaza City,” Gallant said at a news conference, referring to the IDF’s Golani Brigade. Last month, Israel dropped leaflets in the north of Gaza, telling civilians to evacuate south of the Wadi Gaza, before it launched its ground offensive.

Two and a half weeks after sending tanks and ground troops into northern Gaza, Israeli forces entered a hospital early Wednesday that they claim Hamas operates out of. The Israeli army claims the militant group uses hospitals as cover for its fighters, and has set up its main command center in and beneath Shifa Hospital, the largest in the besieged territory. “In the last 24 hours, one UNRWA staff member was killed with her family in the north of the Gaza Strip due to strikes,” the agency said in a statement. “This is the highest number of United Nations aid workers killed in a conflict in the history of the United Nations.”UN offices around the world lowered their flags to half-mast and UN staff held a moment of silence Monday to mourn and honor their colleagues killed in Gaza. “They were teachers, school principals, health workers, including a gynecologist, engineers, support staff and a psychologist,” the statement said. The start of the rainy season and the possibility of flooding increased fears that the densely populated enclave's sewage system will be overwhelmed and disease will spread. At a U.N. shelter in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, the rain brought dismay for displaced people who woke to find the clothes they put out to dry the night had been drenched by rain. It voiced concern on Tuesday about the prospect of rain causing flooding and overwhelming already meagre and damaged sewage facilities. Ahmed Bayram, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Refugee Council, said the start of the rainy season could mark "the most difficult week in Gaza since the (military) escalation began." Touma said just a small amount of rain could cause the streets of Gaza to flood, given the sewage system's inability to absorb water.

The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

HEAVY FIGHTING NEAR SHIFA HOSPITALPolitical Cartoons View All 1240 ImagesIn Gaza City, residents reported heavy airstrikes and shelling overnight, including in the area around Shifa Hospital. Israel, without providing evidence, has accused Hamas of concealing a command post inside and under the hospital compound, allegations denied by Hamas and hospital staff. “We spent the night in panic waiting for their arrival,” said Ahmed al-Boursh, a resident taking shelter in the hospital. A Palestinian child receives treatment at Nasser Medical Center after a strike in Khan Younis, Gaza, on November 7. FAJR Scientific’s goal is to raise enough money to fill five 40-foot containers with medical supplies, surgical tools and sterile instruments, and ship them to Gaza, Nasser says. The group has led several surgical missions to Gaza and trained nearly 100 Palestinian medical workers on the ground, Nasser says. In August, they provided more than $4 million in medical supplies to hospitals across the territory. “The whole world turned their back on the people of Gaza,” Nasser said.

Mustafa al-Kahlout, who heads the Al Nasr hospital and Al Rantisi Pediatric hospital in northern Gaza, told CNN that they were surrounded and asked for the Red Cross to assist with an evacuation. “We do not know our fate.”His call comes after strikes were reported near at least two other hospitals in northern Gaza. This included “two ambulances that were completely damaged,” the hospital statement said. It was not immediately clear if PRCS was referring to the same ambulances mentioned in the hospital’s statement. But the impact on healthcare facilities has raised concerns about the dire humanitarian situation for those remaining in northern Gaza.

[1/5] Palestinian girl Orheen Al-Dayah, who was injured in her forehead in an Israeli strike amid the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, has her wounds stitched without anaesthesia, at Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, November 8, 2023. The war started on Oct. 7 when Hamas gunmen burst through the Gaza Strip's border fence with southern Israel. Procedures that have been performed by staff at Al Shifa under such circumstances have included amputating limbs and fingers, stitching up serious wounds, and treating serious burns, said Abu Selmeyah, without elaborating. Israel said the blast at the Al Ahli Arab Hospital was caused by a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group. For the first 12 days of the war, no aid was allowed into Gaza.

“It is reckless to make those allegations, putting our journalists on the ground in Israel and Gaza at risk,” the statement said. The furor over the Gaza photographers is part of a broader information war that has raged alongside the actual war. But it said in a statement that it was no longer working with Mr. Eslaiah, who filed the earliest and most extensive photos of the attack. There were other red flags about Mr. Eslaiah. He said he had no advance knowledge of the attack and had no links to Hamas, despite the photo with Mr. Sinwar.

GAZA, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The Israeli air strike hit Mohammed Hamdan's Gaza home soon after Islam's evening prayer on Tuesday, he said, killing 35 members of his extended family across three generations from Kamal, aged 70, to Rasmi, aged seven. The Hamdan family is one of many in Gaza eviscerated by an unprecedented air and artillery bombardment that has killed more than 10,000 people according to health authorities in the tiny, crowded, Hamas-run enclave.
