The men’s defense lawyers asked a judge to rule the geofence warrant unconstitutional and throw out any evidence that came from it. Last March, a federal judge in Virginia ruled that a geofence warrant used to find a suspect in a bank robbery was unconstitutional. In September, a state court in San Francisco ruled against the use of a geofence warrant in a burglary investigation. Law enforcement agencies may then try workarounds, like teaming up with agencies in jurisdictions that lack restrictions. “This is a tool that law enforcement is hellbent on using, and I understand why,” Owsley said.
Trump is the only one who declared a presidential run for 2024. Campaign insiders call this presidential campaign period the "preseason," the "trial balloon season," or the "incubation period." And both could take advantage the spotlight of a presidential run because they don't currently hold office, in contrast to governors and US Senators potentially in the mix. Andrew Harnik/APThe field will be set by summerWhen it comes to planning a campaign, candidates don't have full control over their timelines. "If we go into the Iowa Caucuses with more than a dozen candidates," Kochel said, "then some part of the process has failed."

REUTERS/Arnd WiegmannDAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Global leaders and business executives departed a freezing World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting on Friday after a frank exchange of views over how the world will tackle its biggest issues in 2023. Here's what we learned:ECONOMY: Gloom and doom heading into Davos turned into cautious optimism by the end with the global economic outlook for the year ahead looking better than feared. On the inside, political leaders like Kier Starmer railed against new oil investments and Pakistani climate minister Sherry Rehman pushed for loss and damage funding. The lesson I have learned in the last years ... is money, money, money, money, money, money, money."

Cheddar News was founded with the vision of taking on business news big dogs like CNBC. But the vision has been beset by staff defections, complaints of low morale, and editorial red flags. Some on-air talent felt "pressure" to act like social-media influencers, Insider's reporting showed. Sign up for our newsletter to get the news, trends and strategies that advertising and media pros want to know — delivered weekly to your inbox. An Altice spokesperson said in an emailed statement earlier this month that there were "inaccuracies" in Insider's reporting, but did not provide specifics.
A Hawaiian Airlines pilot says a cloud "shot up" and caused flight turbulence, per New York Times. The severe turbulence on the flight from Phoenix to Honolulu in December injured 25 passengers, per the report. The newspaper said the investigator's report stated: "A cloud shot up vertically (like a smoke plume) in front of the airplane in a matter of seconds, and there was not enough time to deviate." The pilot said flying conditions before the cloud shot up were "smooth with clear skies", the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found, the Times reported. According to the Times, the NTSB report said a thunderstorm warning had been issued by the National Weather Service.
After covering the House speaker drama, C-SPAN says it's time for their cameras to have greater access. The network requested that Kevin McCarthy allow C-SPAN to cover more House floor proceedings. The cable and satellite television network's co-CEO Susan Swain, in a letter Tuesday, asked House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to allow C-SPAN to cover House floor proceedings on behalf of their network and all Congressionally-accredited news organizations. The C-SPAN request came after Rep. Matt Gaetz — a breakout star of last week's House speaker C-SPAN show — introduced an amendment to House rules to allow C-SPAN cameras on the floor during regular proceedings. If ongoing coverage is not acceptable, she requested McCarthy permit C-SPAN and other independent journalists to cover key legislative sessions.
16 insiders described unrest and discord partly fueled by the site's revamped social media strategy. Malaspina's plan was for Cheddar to look and feel like a social media platform and to position its stars as influencers. Concerns inside Cheddar intensified when Malaspina, a newcomer to journalism, refocused its coverage on social media content. Multiple segments and even an entire show — "Trending" at 7 p.m. — centered on social media trends and TikTok challenges. It's very troubling to think that news professionals would inflate or distort their social media followings.
Some leagues have decided to forgo determining champions and instead donate their pots to Hamlin’s charity via GoFundMe. “[A] lot of fantasy football leagues are donating their prize pots to the fundraiser. “What an awesome way to handle a unique end to championships — unselfishly.”Hamlin’s two-year-old GoFundMe page topped $7.7 million in donations as of Friday morning. “The unfortunate events surrounding BUF-CIN Monday night have left many Fantasy Football leagues in a bind,” wrote Braun, himself a fantasy league commissioner, on the site. Released Wednesday, the calculator may help clear up some of the confusion fantasy leagues face as players struggle to determine winners without points from Monday night’s game.
"The Idaho state lab later located a single source of male DNA (suspect Profile) left on the button snap of the knife sheath." But Kohberger's phone did not come up in that search. Another search warrant, granted Dec. 23, gave investigators Kohberger's cellphone location during the 24 hours before the killings and the 24 hours afterward. The evidence was sent to the Idaho State Lab for testing and a DNA profile was compared with DNA discovered on the knife sheath. There's likely to be a lot more evidence — more sightings of the Elantra, more information about where Kohberger's phone traveled — that was not included, Martin said.
He says that while being a comedy writer helps him make light of it, the system could be better. Being an immigrant comedy writer or comedian is so absurd. I recently got married to an American comedy writer, and she writes for "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver." Applying to be a late-night writer is a pretty secretive processMost late-night shows will invite you to submit a sample. That spun up "The Colbert Report," and then all the other late-night shows after that always had an opinion on politics.
After the global financial crisis, tectonic shifts in the global economy meant that almost every asset class mostly went up. Then, last year, the portfolio playbook was the simple opposite: sell everything. In 2023, for the first time in a decade-and-a-half, investors need to make big assumptions about the world. Though the S&P 500 index ended 2022 with a 19% fall, it traded sideways during the second half. During this period, most analysts came to agree that inflation has likely peaked, but that there will be a recession in rich nations during the first two quarters of 2023—albeit a mild one.
To Bring the Old Boeing Back, Profit Isn’t Enough

Boeing investors are rightly focused on when the company will make decent money again in 2023 after an ignominious few years. But they should also ask a more existential question: When will this plane maker make planes again? When its retirement was first teased in 2016, it didn’t look as if Boeing was giving up engineering and commercial dominance. Its 777 had shown from the mid-1990s that two-engine jets were the future. Its last clean-sheet model, the 787 Dreamliner, had been flying since 2011.
SVB Securities' Jon Swope thinks some digital-health startups will IPO in the second half of 2023. In 2021, 15 US-based digital-health companies went public via IPO, according to Rock Health. Only one digital-health company has gone public this year: Akili Interactive Labs, which went public in August in a SPAC deal. Seeing the writing on the wall, digital-health companies like Komodo Health that sought to IPO this year are now putting those plans on hold. But SVB Securities' Jon Swope said he thinks the IPO market will reopen for certain digital-health companies in the second half of 2023.
Kit Harington had only recently graduated from drama school and starred in his first play when he was cast as Jon Snow in HBO's "Game of Thrones" at the age of 21. In an appearance at the first official "Game of Thrones" fan convention this month the 35-year-old credited his friends for keeping him humble. "I kept a really solid group of friends around me who took the piss out of me all the time," he said during a Q&A recorded for "The Official Game of Thrones Podcast". Harington said that he learned to stay away from internet comments and stopped reading what people wrote about him. He protected himself and his confidence by reminding himself that "Game of Thrones" was "just a TV show."

Japan’s Yield Curve Control Is a Tool Worth Keeping

Like a heavy power drill, the Bank of Japan’s policy of capping bond yields seems to be difficult to use without cracking the wall. Unlike many of the tools tested by central banks since 2008, though, it may be worth keeping in the box. Haruhiko Kuroda has so far stood apart from other central bankers in refusing to unwind extra-loose monetary policy. Under his “yield curve control,” or YCC, the 10-year Japanese government-debt yield remains pegged at 0%. Yields have since jumped close to the new ceiling.
In Finance, as in Our Universe, Big Bangs Only Happen Once

Britain aspires to a second “Big Bang” in financial services such as the one famously unleashed by Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. But the point of a Big Bang is that it only happens once. Earlier this month, British Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt unveiled the so-called Edinburgh Reforms, an ambitious loosening of financial regulations aimed at restoring some of the international competitiveness lost by the U.K. in recent years. This includes easing the “ring-fencing” separating retail and investment banking, scrapping the cap on bankers’ bonuses, overhauling the regime that makes senior managers responsible for infractions and repealing aspects of European Union rules. Officials also want to lower taxes on asset managers and make it easier to raise capital in the U.K.
Mark Cuban said there's still some underlying value in crypto despite the ongoing sell-off. "99% of it was noise but there's real value there," he told 'The Problem with Jon Stewart' Monday. Cuban added that Sam Bankman-Fried's arrest on fraud charges will force crypto to "get its act together". "There's the signal and the noise," Cuban told Apple TV+'s "The Problem with Jon Stewart". Stablecoin issuer Terra and hedge fund Three Arrows Capital collapsed earlier in 2022 as the crypto selloff brought to light potential instabilities in the digital asset sector.
Twenty people who were on a Hawaiian Airlines flight near Honolulu suffered significant injuries when the jetliner bucked violently in a patch of turbulent air Sunday, officials said. The aircraft was at capacity, with 278 passengers, eight flight attendants and two pilots on board, when the incident shook it enough to damage interior panels and cause head injuries for multiple people, Hawaiian Airlines officials said. Flight 35 was at a cruising altitude of 36,000 feet when it hit the patch, Hawaiian Airlines Chief Operating Officer Jon Snook said at a news conference Sunday. Fasten seat belt lights were on at the time, but at least some of the injured were not restrained properly, airlines officials said. Such a level of turbulence has not affected a Hawaiian Airlines flight since the century began, Snook said.
A Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu encountered "severe turbulence" on Sunday. A Hawaiian Airlines executive said the plane had struck a "rare" air pocket. In all, 36 people received medical treatment following Sunday's turbulent Hawaiian Airlines flight for bumps, bruises, cuts and nausea, said Jim Ireland, director of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services. Passenger Kaylee Reyes told Hawaii News Now that her mother had just sat down when the turbulence hit and had not had a chance to buckle her safety belt. There was some internal damage to the aircraft during the turbulence, Snook said. In 2019, 37 passengers and flight crew members were injured when an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Sydney hit intense turbulence about two hours past Hawaii. Over the Atlantic, a 2017 American Airlines flight from Athens hit severe turbulence along the New York coastline.
Stocks plunged earlier this month after the closely watched November jobs report showed a resilient labor market. They fell again on Thursday when weekly numbers showed the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell, indicating a still-tight labor market. “There’s an imbalance in the labor market between supply and demand,” he said, adding that it will take a “substantial period” to fix that imbalance. That path to the Fed’s 2% inflation target is through the jobs market. “There will be some softening in labor market conditions,” Powell said.
Investors have opposing signals to ponder when it comes to European stocks: On the one hand, the economy isn’t doing nearly as badly as feared. On the other, the European Central Bank is also aware of this. On Friday, the December flash release of the purchasing managers index for the eurozone came in at a four-month high, exceeding analysts’ expectations. Though it still signaled a sixth consecutive month of contraction in business activity, the pace of decline has been moderating since November. Crucially, the improvement was led by Germany, which has been in a particularly precarious position due to its factories’ previous dependence on Russian natural gas.
Los Angeles CNN —Donald Trump’s entrance into the NFT world came at the worst possible moment. It bears noting, however, that despite the bad timing Trump’s NFT collection has shot to the top of NFT marketplace OpenSea’s ranking and has raked in more than $1.4 million since its launch. On the Trump Digital Trading Cards website, the Trump collection claims to be “sold out” and the floor price for a single card has risen to $177.99, according to analytics site CoinGecko. SPACs boomed in 2020 with celebrities and investors piling in, but rising interest rates and a troubled stock market has led to a dramatic fall in SPAC value. Trump’s entrance into the SPAC world came after the boom.
