Gaza Hospital Strike: What We Know
  + stars: | 2023-10-17 | by ( ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Palestinian health officials said more than 500 people were killed in an Israeli strike on a Gaza hospital, while Israel said the explosion was caused by a Palestinian rocket. Here’s what we know so far:Palestinian officials blamed the blast on an Israeli airstrike. The Israeli military said it was caused by a rocket fired by Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a militant group based in Gaza. The Israeli military said an analysis of its operations systems showed the militant group fired a volley of rockets near the hospital when it was hit. The source of the blast couldn’t yet be independently verified.

The 15-member council had initially been due to vote Monday on the Brazilian draft, but it was postponed 24 hours to allow more time to negotiate. It was unclear if the United States, a veto-power who traditionally shields its ally Israel from any Security Council action, would allow the resolution to pass. Instead of calling for a ceasefire, it calls for humanitarian pauses in the conflict to allow aid access to Gaza.

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — A massive blast rocked a Gaza City hospital packed with wounded and other Palestinians seeking shelter Tuesday, killing hundreds of people, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said. Hamas blamed an Israeli airstrike, while the Israeli military said the hospital was hit by a rocket misfired by Palestinian militants. Hamas' Oct. 7, attack in southern Israel killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and took some 200 captive into Gaza. In Gaza City, Israeli airstrikes also hit the house of Hamas’ top political official, Ismail Haniyeh, killing at least 14 people. Haniyeh is based in Doha, Qatar, but his family lives in Gaza City.

President Biden’s trip to Israel on Wednesday will put him in a region where grief and fury are mounting, not only toward Israel, but also toward the United States, the world power that has declared unyielding support for its chief Middle East ally. On Tuesday, widespread condemnation of Israel rippled across the region after a huge explosion at a hospital in the Gaza Strip killed hundreds of Palestinians who had been seeking treatment and refuge. Israel has denied being behind the blast, blaming a Palestinian group, Islamic Jihad, for a failed rocket launch. But even before that, many people across the region had come to view Israel’s war with Hamas — the Palestinian armed group that carried out a shocking attack on southern Israel more than a week ago, slaughtering 1,400 people — as an American-backed massacre of Palestinian civilians in the blockaded territory of Gaza. Israel has cut off water, medicine and electricity in the enclave and continued to target Gaza with deadly airstrikes, bringing the death toll to at least 2,800 before the hospital explosion.

The suspect spent some time in Italy before moving to Sweden, but was expelled from there under the EU's "Dublin" rules and returned to Italy, one of the sources said. Italian authorities lost track of him some time in 2016 and presumed he had again moved abroad, the source added. In Brussels, Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne said his country had received an unconfirmed report in 2016 from a foreign police service indicating that the suspected attacker had a "radicalised profile" and wanted to go to a war zone to wage jihad. After his meetings in Israel, Biden had planned to travel to Jordan for meetings with Arab leaders, but that stop was canceled after the strike on the hospital which Palestinian officials blamed on Israel and Israel blamed on the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group. "He'll be asking some tough questions, he'll be asking them as a friend, as a true friend of Israel, but he'll be asking some questions of them," Kirby said. Kirby declined to specify the nature of the questions Biden intended to ask beyond "what their plans are going forward." Israel Says It Killed a Hamas Commander in Airstrike

An airstrike in Gaza killed a Hamas commander who led one of last weekend’s massacres of civilians, the Israeli military said. The strike, late on Saturday in southern Gaza, killed Billal Al Kedra, the Hamas commander responsible for the Kibbutz Nirim massacre, the Israel Defense Forces said Sunday. The IDF said it also killed other Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives and reduced their operational capability by striking command centers, military compounds and antitank missile launch sites.

CNN —The myriad tunnels under Gaza are best known as passageways used to smuggle goods from Egypt and launch attacks into Israel. Hamas in 2021 claimed to have built 500 kilometers (311 miles) worth of tunnels under Gaza, though it is unclear if that figure was accurate or posturing. If true, Hamas’ underground tunnels would be a little less than half the length of the New York City subway system. It’s unclear how much the tunnel network would have cost Hamas, which governs the impoverished coastal strip. The IDF is expected to go after the network in its forthcoming ground incursion into Gaza, as it has in recent years gone to extreme lengths to eliminate Hamas’ tunnels.

For Iran, Hamas has helped it realise a years-long ambition to encircle Israel with legions of paramilitaries, including other Palestinian factions and Lebanon's Hezbollah, according to Western officials. After Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, Hamas began importing rockets, explosives and other equipment from Iran, Western intelligence sources have said.
