The Eagles (5-1) got one more chance to win when they got the ball back, but the defense stiffened — as it had all game. Hurts finished 28 of 45 for 280 yards and one touchdown but had three picks against a Jets defense that was missing starting cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. By rule, only the player who lost the ball could recover the forward fumble in the end zone, so it was ruled that it was the Jets' ball on the 1. Israel said it dropped 6,000 bombs on the Gaza Strip during the first six days of war with Hamas. That's more bombs than the US-led coalition dropped in any month during the fight against ISIS. Allied forces dropped 5,000 bombs in August 2017 — at the peak of their air campaign. But that August saw a record 5,075 bombs dropped, marking the only time that figure ever surpassed 5,000. Israel is reeling from the deadly Hamas terror attacks last weekend, with many looking for answers. The surprise assault exposed major shortcomings in Israel's feared military and security and intelligence apparatus. Israeli warplanes continue to bombard Gaza as ground forces mass in the surrounding area. And as forces continue to mass near the border, Israeli officials continue to signal that this is just the beginning. It's been nearly a decade since Israel last invaded Gaza, giving Hamas ample time to prepare. In Gaza, Israeli forces may be vulnerable to traps, surprise guerrilla warfare tactics, and well-armed militants who have the advantage of defending the complex terrain. Israel, nonetheless, retains strong international support from the US in its fight with Hamas, which the US regards as a terrorist organization.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to destroy Hamas. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn the wake of the devastating terror attacks by militant group Hamas in Israel, the country's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, vowed to destroy the group. And even if Israel succeeds in its assault, it is unlikely to completely destroy Hamas. Hamas could use the hostages as human shields, placing them at military and other sites likely to be targeted by the Israeli military. According to a 2017 study by RAND, Israel has sought to contain Hamas, but not outright destroy it.

Israeli forces continue to mobilize ahead of what appears to be preparations for a ground invasion of Gaza. The IDF said it ultimately wants to strip Hamas of its military and governing capabilities there. War experts say rooting out Hamas will still be a tough fight, given the urban environment. Ultimately, it remains unclear when Israeli forces might actually advance, but it is clear preparations are underway. "So you can believe that they've stockpiled a lot of weapons — not just rockets for attacking into Israel, but for attacking a possible ground invasion."

Sweden is asking its military to explore the prospects of sending Ukraine its Gripen fighter jets. But there won't be any transfer until Stockholm joins NATO, its defense minister said. Citing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and neighboring Finland first announced their intentions to join NATO over a year ago, breaking away from decades of neutrality. The Gripen was designed to take on Russian fighter jets and features electronic-warfare capabilities built to counter the radars in Moscow's aircraft and ground-based air-defense systems. Even if Sweden decides to send Gripens to Ukraine, it would be many months before they actually reach the battlefield.
