LOS ANGELES — Brittany Furlan, the comedian and wife of rocker Tommy Lee, says her dog’s extra flab saved it from being carried off by a coyote that snatched it near the pool of their Los Angeles home. Ring surveillance camera video posted Tuesday to Instagram by Furlan shows the coyote snatching the small dog, Neena, from poolside and running out of frame while Furlan screams and follows. "Thank God, I always watch them," she told NBC Los Angeles. What was described as a coyote positions to grab Brittany Furlan's dog Neena from her backyard in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday. People are encouraged to not leave small pets outside unsupervised and to bring small pets inside at night to prevent coyote attacks.

CNN —Andrew Holmes’ images of trucks on Californian highways are sun-drenched, saturated and sharp. Now, Holmes’ works have been brought together in a book — “Gas Tank City” (Circa Press) — alongside a show of the same name at London’s Architectural Association (AA). The drawings that make up the "Gas Tank City" book and exhibition celebrate every inch of the classic American truck, particularly the iconic Kenworth model. While the words “hyperreal” and “photorealistic” are used to describe his work, Holmes points out that the drawings are “completely unlike” photographic images. Together, “Gas Tank City” creates a portrait of life on the road, detached from specificities of time and place.

A boy kidnapped more than seven decades ago from a California park was found alive and well as a senior citizen, reunited with surviving loved ones after his niece found him across the country through her own DNA research, police said Monday. His genetic material was a match to two surviving siblings in California, proving Albino was the boy taken in 1951, police said. The Oakland Police Department statement didn't make clear who officers believed took Albino from that park seven decades ago, nor did it identify who raised him. Albino's 92-year-old mother died in 2005 never knowing the fate of her kidnapped son, the Bay Area News Group reported. “I think he died happily,” said 63-year-old Alida Alequin, the niece who alerted police to her 22% DNA match to Albino.

A Sierra Madre couple has few complaints about the reclusive tenant who moved in a few weeks ago. They’ve captured several photos on a motion-activated camera installed by California Fish and Wildlife agents that show what appears to be the face of an older large black bear. “We would wait for the bear to leave the crawlspace,” said Kevin Howells, of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. About half of the state’s bear population can be found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and areas to the north and west. Only an estimated 10 percent of the black bear population inhabits central western and southwestern California.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. But if you were generally tense, anxious, or fearful around your parent or caretaker, there's a chance you were raised by an eggshell parent. An eggshell parent is "often highly unpredictable, and unsafe in some way," she added. Sage shared a few signs you grew up with at least one eggshell parent, and what the long-term impacts of such a relationship can be. She added that eggshell parents often lack self-awareness of how their intense mood swings impact other people, especially their kids. Without that acknowledgment, children of eggshell parents might continue to believe that they "caused" their parents' outbursts, and that they're responsible for managing other people's emotions.

Ted Purdom, from San Anselmo, California, graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in English and enrolled in an overseas language program, aiming to learn Spanish. He ended up in Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic islands off the east coast of Spain, for the nine-month program. A friend told him about another program that placed American “language coaches” in Spain, called “Auxiliares de Conversación,” (conversation assistants), run by the Spanish Ministry of Education. So that November he opened The Bridge English Academy in Manacor, converting a former wine store into classrooms to give English language courses to locals. Then there’s the fact that the islanders’ first language isn’t Spanish, but Mallorquin, a dialect of Catalan.

A California firefighter was arrested on suspicion of arson in a series of small fires that burned in wine country in recent weeks, officials said Friday. Robert Hernandez, 38, was accused of setting five fires between Aug. 15 and Sept. 14 while off-duty, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said in a news release. Hernadez, a Cal Fire apparatus engineer, allegedly ignited the blazes around Geyserville, Healdsburg and Windsor, the department said. More than 4 million acres burned across the state in 2020, setting a record for the largest number of acres burned in California in modern times, the department said. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.
