Hurricane Lisa strikes coast near top Belize port
  + stars: | 2022-11-02 | by ( Jose Sanchez | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
BELIZE CITY, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Hurricane Lisa bore down on Belize on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported in a bulletin, predicting it will later move across the jungles of northern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico. Weather models show Lisa's heavy rainfall and powerful winds will likely target tourist destinations in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico's Caribbean-facing Yucatan Peninsula, dotted by beach resorts, pristine coral reefs and Mayan ruins. The eye of Lisa, now at Category 1 strength, is currently located about 5 miles (8 km) south of Belize City, the tiny Caribbean country's commercial hub, as it churns westward. Palm trees buckled as winds picked up in the Caribbean port city, as residents reported water and power outages plus some flooding. The Belize government's emergency services announced on Wednesday afternoon a state of emergency including a curfew across two districts covering large swathes of its Caribbean coast through Thursday.
It's the most important... We're not asking them to (win) the World Cup," he added. Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, brother of Qatar's ruling emir, established Aspire in 2004 to develop homegrown players -- six years before Qatar's national team automatically qualified for the 2022 World Cup when it was named host country. Since June, Sanchez has taken Qatar's players to training camps in Spain and Austria. The mixed performance suggests the Gulf Arab state are no heavyweights - the team might not stand a chance against their other World Cup Group A opponents Senegal and the Netherlands. "We won't be able to tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing until after the World Cup."

For more than two months, Jesús carried a clipping of that photo to every prison in El Salvador, and then to every hospital. When police and soldiers fanned out across El Salvador to make their arrests, Bukele tweeted the daily number of “terrorists” detained and talked tough about making their lives miserable. A soldier frisks a motorcyclist at a checkpoint outside Comasagua, El Salvador, on Oct. 6. They should be kept behind bars for as long as possible, said Gallegos, who is also a proponent of the death penalty in El Salvador. After forming in Salvadoran immigrant communities in Los Angeles in the 1970s and 1980s, gang members brought their criminal networks back to El Salvador.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW TO VENEZUELANS IN TRANSIT TO THE UNITED STATES? Those in transit may attempt to reach the United States despite the near certainty that they will be sent back to Mexico. It is unclear where Venezuelans waiting in Mexico will stay, as Mexico's migrant shelter system is often overwhelmed. Then in 2014, Venezuela's economy buckled as global oil prices tumbled, and living conditions further deteriorated as stringent price controls created widespread shortages. Remittances to Venezuelans from relatives in the United States or elsewhere help but are insufficient for most.
A video of four parachutists making haphazard landings inside a football stadium has been falsely linked by social media users to Uganda. “A parachute display by Uganda's Special Forces went somewhat tits up,” wrote one verified Twitter user as a caption (here). But the video was filmed in Honduras and is unrelated to Uganda. According to local media, 40 Air Force paratroopers conducted a display over the stadium on Sept. 15 to mark Honduras Independence Day. The video was captured in Honduras.

“This looks and smells like human trafficking,” said Ariadna Phillips, a New York community organizer with South Bronx Mutual Aid. On Tuesday, DeSantis said at a news conference that three of four people arrested last week for "ransacking" communities following Hurricane Ian were illegal immigrants who should be immediately deported. Remembering "horror stories" of immigrants not being paid for work or being deported following previous natural disasters, Phillips rushed to Queens. "Promises are often not kept to these workers," said Saket Soni, executive director of Resilience Workforce, a New Orleans group that advocates for and monitors migrant workers following natural disasters. In the days following Ian, Resilience Workforce deployed staff members to Florida to observe work conditions on the ground.

REUTERS/Jorge CabreraTEGUCIGALPA, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A Honduran court sentenced the country's former first lady, Rosa Bonilla, to 14 years in prison on Wednesday on charges of fraud and misappropriation of funds destined for social programs, a judicial spokesperson said. Bonilla had previously been sentenced to 58 years in prison in an earlier trial, which Honduras' Supreme Court annulled in early 2020, arguing it was full of inconsistencies. "Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration," a US official said. In total, just under 158,000 people had encounters with southwest border officials in August. "Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest US border," CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a statement. More than 55,000 people from the three, ostensibly socialist regimes were encountered at the southwest border in August, per CBP. The fact that nearly half of all migrants encountered were from Nicaragua and South America, he said, represented a "staggering change."
GOP governors have been sending migrants to eastern cities in protest of Biden's immigration policies. The lawmakers say Biden's administration isn't doing enough at the border. Former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said it's unfair to say the Biden administration is "lax" on immigration. Johnson added that border security is a lot tougher since he served as DHS Secretary eight years ago. His remarks come as several GOP governors began sending migrants to northern US cities.
Penn State's PlantVillage uses technology solutions and field teams to increase farmers' crop yield. As warming temperatures spawn more crop pests, groups, including PlantVillage, are increasingly using artificial intelligence to protect agriculture. Each year, plant diseases cost the global economy more than $220 billion, while invasive insects cost at least $70 billion. The climate crisis increases crop diseases and pests — like the desert locust, which could spread because of warming temperatures. Farmers are encouraged to plant trees with biochar, a soil additive that can store carbon dioxide for centuries.

America’s relationship to gun ownership is unique, and its gun culture is a global outlier. It is then unsurprising that the US has more deaths from gun violence than any other developed country per capita. A 2019 study published in the British Medical Journal found that US states with more permissive gun laws and greater gun ownership had higher rates of mass shootings. A decade of gun violence, culminating with the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, prompted the Australian government to take action. Many countries around the world have been able to tackle gun violence.
