Administrator of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, Deanne Criswell, speaks during a press briefing at the White House in Washington, U.S., September 26, 2024. Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Deanne Criswell on Sunday criticized former President Donald Trump for spreading false information about how the Biden administration allocated disaster relief funding for Hurricane Helene recovery. "It's frankly ridiculous and just plain false," Criswell said in an interview on ABC's "This Week." On FEMA's "Rumor Response" webpage, the agency specifically addressed the claim that FEMA disaster relief funding "was diverted to support international efforts or border related issues." The Department of Homeland Security and White House have issued their own statements fact-checking and condemning the false claims.

An aerial view of flood damage wrought by Hurricane Helene along the Swannanoa River on October 3, 2024 in Asheville, North Carolina. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., chided some of the conspiracy theories that have surfaced surrounding the Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in western North Carolina. Claims about the federal response to Hurricane Helene have been coming from all over social media. When asked about Trump's comments that the federal response to the recovery efforts in North Carolina was terrible and that emergency funding was being used on immigrants, Tillis gave a two-pronged response. He also noted that, as of this moment, immigration is "not yet" impacting "the flow of resources to western North Carolina."

It is forecast to intensify into a hurricane by Sunday night — and a major hurricane by late Monday. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be issued for parts of the western Florida coast on Sunday — with dangerous storm surge expected for some areas just slammed by Helene. “This is something that potentially would be greater power outages than what we just saw with Hurricane Helene,” the governor said, noting the state’s residents still have a couple of days to get ready. Tropical Storm Milton formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Saturday morning, just hours after it became a tropical depression, , according to the National Hurricane Center. This new storm formation comes less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, bringing life-threatening conditions to the state's west coast next week. Maximum sustained winds from Tropical Storm Milton are estimated to be 40 miles per hour with higher gusts, the NHC said. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be required for certain regions of Florida on Sunday, many of which have just been hard-hit by Hurricane Helene. The National Weather Service placed the region in the potential path of Tropical Storm Milton, although it is still too early to tell how the storm will impact the county.

The chairman of a House Homeland Security subcommittee is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to detail what it did to prepare for Hurricane Helene after it became clear there would be catastrophic flooding. Helene made landfall in Big Bend, Florida, on Sept. 26, causing flooding that devastated North Carolina, Tennessee and other Southern states and claimed more than 200 lives. D’Esposito, R-N.Y., cited a local official from Buncombe County, North Carolina, who claimed that water was requested before the storm started but was delayed, further exacerbating the water shortage in Asheville. Post-landfall, it “surged capacity to where it was needed the most.” She noted that western North Carolina has now been identified as the area that was hardest hit. More than 6,400 federal personnel, including FEMA staff, are deployed in the affected areas.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — America’s largest privately-owned estate has abruptly shut down in Asheville after Hurricane Helene caused extensive flooding and building damage along the 8,000 acre property. The iconic Biltmore Estate, situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, spans 175,000 square feet, boasts 250 rooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces and 22 miles of walking trail. “We are still assessing impacts to the estate from Tropical Storm Helene and that will take some time,” the estate said. In forested areas, which is a large portion of the estate, wind damage is extensive to grounds and some structures.” The post also said crews are clearing roads to start repairs. New York CNN —False claims about the federal response to the historic devastation left by Hurricane Helene are spreading out of control on social media, hampering recovery efforts in hard-hit areas, according to local officials. Elon Musk, the X owner who has endorsed Trump, has repeatedly posted rumors and innuendo denigrating the federal government’s response to Helene. Most of the misinformation is brazenly political, portraying President Joe Biden and Harris as incompetent in an attempt to help Trump win reelection. The (Donald) Trump campaign, on the other hand, is looking to the Sun Belt. Instead of knocking on doors in key states, Trump’s allies are using funding from tech billionaire Elon Musk to do some nontraditional things. But some things are still going to be much more expensive on Election Day than they were when Trump was president. It’s one month to Election Day, but that’s a little bit of a misnomer. No matter what happens with the 2024 election, Trump is unlikely to accept the results if Harris wins.
