Surf City USA —for a financial conference. A financial conference on a beach? Reinventing the financial conferenceWelcome to FutureProof, billed as "the largest gathering of top-tier wealth management professionals, CEOs, CTOs, COOs, and fast-growing financial advisors." It's the brainchild of Barry Ritholtz, co-founder, chairman, and chief investment officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management, and CEO Josh Brown. "Coming out of the pandemic, it was obvious to us that the traditional financial conference was past its sell-by date," Ritholtz told me.

He didn’t care that it was a no-hitter. He just wanted the Yankees to win. After two innings, I texted a Brewers fan to say I was worried the Yankees would be no-hit. He replied that Milwaukee didn’t have the offense for it to matter. After 10 innings we both looked prophetic, as it was a 0-0 tie and the Yankees had not managed a single hit off Burnes or the relievers Devin Williams and Abner Uribe.

Its restaurant portfolio includes Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill and Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. But a better opportunity might be their hidden gem in the 150 Outback restaurants in Brazil. As for Starboard, the firm has had extensive success at both Papa John's and Darden, but in strikingly different ways. Papa John's was a very amicable engagement in which Starboard was invited onto the board and worked with management to create extensive shareholder value. If management is smart, they will view Darden as a warning, and Papa John's as the opportunity.

Their most common approach, instead, was to put the emergency expense on a credit card and pay it over time. If you do use your credit card, make sure you prioritize paying off the balance in full by the end of the month, she added. "Use your credit card as a 30-day bridge, but commit to paying that off," she said. HELOCs interest rates are generally lower than credit card interest rates. However, they tend to be variable interest rates, so you don't want to use it if you don't have to, McClanahan said.

Hello from Atlanta, where school started a month ago and we are deep into packing lunches, working hard and trying to ignore the recent courthouse shenanigans that seem to keep Georgia on everybody’s mind. By some estimates, nearly 95 percent of the crop was lost largely because of a hard and untimely freeze. But we Georgians have 40 commercial varieties, all of them ripening to a deep sugary tang under the hot Southern sun. I cherished the few peaches I did get, even though they were crazy expensive and weren’t as sweet or as ripe as usual. The brilliant Ligaya Mishan, a columnist for The New York Times Magazine, came to my rescue with a recipe to grill them (above).

Summer’s Not Over Yet

This weekend, while you’re working the grill or attending a parade or sitting in traffic, conversation will turn, inevitably, to the end of summer. Labor Day, nominally a holiday celebrating the industriousness of the American worker, also serves to remind the worker that they haven’t been quite as industrious as they might have been these past three months. In his eulogy for summer’s lazy days in The Times today, my colleague Stephen Kurutz mourns the vestiges of truly unmonitored working from home that this fall seems to augur: “Will we forget the small pleasure of sitting on a porch and looking at the yard?” he writes. Of trading the daily commute for an aimless drive?”Why must there be such an austere demarcation between before Labor Day and after, between summer and not-summer, between enjoying our lives and enduring them? Why have we so internalized the back-to-school dread of childhood that it’s become a permanent feature of adulthood?

"The U.S. consumer is on thin ice coming into the final stretch of 2023," said Emily Roland, co-chief investment strategist at John Hancock Investment Management. Further declines in the labor market will likely act as a double-edged sword for investors, relieving some inflation pressures while weighing on consumer spending. Overall consumer spending rose slightly more than expected in August, while the savings rate fell to its lowest since November 2022, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. Betting against the consumer spending has so far been a losing wager. TERRACE STORY, by Hilary LeichterPriced out of their first home in an unnamed city, a young couple and their infant daughter, Rose, move into a smaller apartment. Structured as a collection of four linked stories, the book moves from Annie and Edward to another young couple, George and Lydia, who happens to be Rose’s daughter and is pregnant with her own. In the third section — the longest and most revelatory — Annie’s co-worker Stephanie is the focus of a grief-stricken origin story that deepens the novel’s supernatural fancies. The fourth section, set on an interstellar “suburb” as humanity migrates into outer space, brings Rose into contact with an “older woman” who is somehow Rose’s granddaughter. By contrast, Leichter announces her metaphysical conceit with a simple dinner party.

LongHorn Steakhouse and Texas Roadhouse are two chains serious about serving the best meat. I visited both chains to see how each handles the ultimate steak lover's cut, the bone-in rib eye. Even though LongHorn delivered the better meal this time, I'd sooner go back to Texas Roadhouse. Look no further than the booming growth of national chains like LongHorn Steakhouse and Texas Roadhouse, which have both seen substantial gains in new locations and sales in the past year, boosting the share prices of their respective parent companies. Although neither brand has actual origins in the Lone Star state — LongHorn was founded in Georgia in 1981 and Texas Roadhouse in Indiana in 1994 — both have adopted Texas-inspired identities and a mission to serve the best meat.

Blister Your Vegetables

Auspiciously, we were seated right away, and we ordered a round of beers and some edamame. Overcome by the sort of silliness a spontaneous summer day affords you, our table soon descended into an all-consuming giggle pit. Between fits of laughter and played-out bits, we came up for air only to snack on the warm pods, which arrived unexpectedly blistered by a grill, rather than blanched or steamed. The pleasantly smoky exteriors yielded to beans that had retained some of those fire-kissed flavors. There’s a certain bliss to blistered vegetables.

US auto safety agency probes 2022 Ford Mach-E EV recall

REUTERS/Phil Noble/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 21 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said Monday they are investigating whether Ford Motor's (F.N) 2022 recall of nearly 49,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles adequately addressed concerns. Ford issued the 2022 recall because high voltage battery main contactors may overheat from DC fast-charging and repeated wide-open pedal events, which could result in an immediate loss of power, increasing the risk of a crash. Following the recall, Ford issued a technical service bulletin to replace the High Voltage Battery Junction Box on recalled vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has opened a recall query after receiving 12 consumer complaints regarding Mach-E vehicles that received recall fixes.
