Remembering Martin Amis

The writer Martin Amis, who died last week at the age of 73, was a towering figure of English literature. Amis was “arguably the most slashing, articulate, devastatingly clear, pungent writer of the last 25 years of the past century and the first almost 25 of this century,” Garner says. Just his way with words, his descriptions, the fact that he scorned cliché, scorned outdated language. In my own life as a writer, there are very few writers — of course I’m not a fiction writer, but I study writing — there are only a handful of writers that I think of in the category that Martin Amis is in, which is, if I’m stuck on a piece or I’ve just written a bad sentence, I think: Would Martin Amis ever let this sentence go to print? Not that I can hope to match his sentences, but I hope not to sink to this level where, don’t do that because Martin Amis wouldn’t do it.”We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review’s podcast in general.
The space plane is designed to then detach from the mothership, fire its rocket engine and swoop straight up with its two pilots at the controls. Elon Musk last month cut Twitter's paid parental leave policy from 20 weeks to just two weeks. Twitter workers got something of a reprieve from Elon Musk's decision to drastically reduce parental leave. Last month, Twitter cut paid parental leave from 20 weeks to just two weeks, changing the policy without officially notifying employees. The new policy brings Twitter's leave policy close to that of Tesla. Tesla's workers all receive up to 16 weeks of parental leave, but that's only at full pay under certain circumstances.
Why Was This Patient Turning So Yellow?
  + stars: | 2023-05-16 | by ( Lisa Sanders | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
The color came from a buildup of something known as bilirubin, a breakdown product of red blood cells. Normally there is a constant low level of this dark-colored waste created and disposed of as red blood cells are born and die. The whites of a patient’s eyes might be a little yellow — it’s where jaundice is most easily seen — but this man was visibly yellow everywhere. Usually you see that only with a severe iron deficiency or with some anomaly in the shape of the red blood cells. Red blood cells with any other shape are destroyed at a much higher rate.

A US recession is coming, they say, in the second half of 2023. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon warned on Thursday of great economic danger lurking just over the horizon. Things weren’t great last year: Inflation hit a 40-year peak, gas prices were elevated, consumer sentiment plunged and markets fell by 20%. “This has been the most predicted potential recession in memory,” said Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President Tom Barkin way back in January. Historically, recession typically coincides with that peak, said Barry Gilbert, asset allocation strategist for LPL Financial.

Opinion | Fear of a Black Cleopatra

The new Netflix docudrama “Queen Cleopatra,” produced and narrated by Jada Pinkett Smith, has already elicited a passionate response, though perhaps not the kind that publicists hoped for. “Queen Cleopatra” depicts the legendary monarch as Black. Many contemporary Egyptians view her as a key figure in the preservation of their history and even as a role model for contemporary Egyptian women. Scholars have long debated whether certain references in Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra” suggest that the playwright believed she had dark skin. “Queen Cleopatra,” however, has touched an international nerve.

Elon Musk for months has said "excellent" Twitter employees will be rewarded for their efforts. Employees at Twitter are frustrated by Elon Musk's unkept promises. The latest is paid parental leave, which is now just two weeks, down from a previous paid leave policy of 20 weeks. Outside of that leave period, Twitter employees will be able to take unpaid leave up to the amount mandated by state law. In California, where Twitter is still based, workers are legally entitled to 12 weeks of protected, but unpaid, parental leave.
