Alex Teachey is a New Yorker who moved to Taiwan in 2020. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Alex Teachey, a 38-year-old astronomer and New Yorker who moved to Taiwan in 2020. I landed my current job as a postdoctoral fellow at the Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan, that same year. It's in a neighborhood that I love, in New Taipei City, the enormous donut that sprawls around the center of Taipei. I live a 20-minute bike ride from my office — I never could have have afforded anything remotely similar if I'd stayed in New York City.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury Department has sent notices to 30 ship management companies requesting information for more than 100 vessels it suspects of transporting Russian crude oil above the Western oil price cap, according to a source who has seen the documents. It bans Western companies from providing services such as transportation, insurance and financing for the oil sold above the cap. The price cap has caused a shift in global markets as China and India purchase Russian oil, much of which had traditionally gone to Europe and other markets. A rally in global oil prices this year has meant much of Russian oil has traded above the cap. "Ghost guns" seized in federal law enforcement actions are displayed at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) field office in Glendale, California on April 18, 2022. A federal appeals court on Thursday ruled that the Biden administration lacked authority to adopt a regulation aimed at reining in privately made firearms called "ghost guns" that are difficult for law enforcement to trace. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with a group of firearm owners, gun rights groups and manufacturers in declaring the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' 2022 rule "unlawful." The administration has said that ghost guns are attractive to criminals and others prohibited from lawfully buying firearms, including minors. There were about 20,000 suspected ghost guns reported in 2021 to the ATF as having been recovered by law enforcement in criminal investigations — a tenfold increase from 2016, according to the White House.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

The race to integrate shopping into social media in the US kicked into high gear this year. Big social platforms including YouTube, TikTok, and Pinterest are adding new commerce features at a fast clip. A slew of startups have also been rushing to introduce products and services that help brands, influencers, and — perhaps most importantly — consumers get used to the idea of buying on social media. Some companies, like Whatnot and Flip, are building separate apps for brands and creators to sell products through livestreams. Insider compiled a list of nine startups that are helping creators, brands, retailers, and consumers break into social shopping in the US.

A compilation of scenes of nuclear weapons attacks is made up of excerpts from several movies, and is not, as suggested in online posts, an animation released by the Kremlin depicting nuclear attacks on U.S. cities. Posts on social media said: “The Russian Kremlin just released this animation depicting multiple nuclear strikes on American cities. Does this worry you?” The video shows various nuclear missiles in flight followed by explosions across North American cities. The scene in timestamps 0:17-0:25 of the circulating video shows nuclear weapons launched from the sky toward a city. The social media video is a compilation of explosion scenes from several well-known movies, and there is no evidence it was released by the Kremlin.

Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that the measure failed a stringent test set by the Supreme Court in a 2022 ruling that required gun laws to be "consistent with the nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation" in order to survive a Second Amendment challenge. Violating the law initially was punishable by up to 10 years in prison but has since been raised to 15 years. A federal judge rejected Rahimi's Second Amendment challenge and sentenced him to more than six years in prison. Biden's administration has said the law should survive because of the long tradition in the United States of taking guns from people deemed dangerous. Supporters of Rahimi have argued that judges too easily issue restraining orders in an unfair process that results in the deprivation of the constitutional gun rights of accused abusers.

Two years later, Congress put such a law in place, prohibiting people facing domestic violence restraining orders from having guns. Gun rights organizations are supporting Zackey Rahimi, the Texas man whose challenge to the law led to the Supreme Court case. A gun, though, is more than just a potential source of violence, Glenn said, recalling how her husband threatened her and her then-teenage son, David, repeatedly. Rahimi’s case reached the Supreme Court after prosecutors appealed a ruling that threw out his conviction for possessing guns while subject to a restraining order. The court's decision in the Rahimi case could have widespread ripple effects, including in the high-profile prosecution of Hunter Biden.

The New York Times reported that some troops returned seeing ghosts and feeling "cursed." But many of those troops have nonetheless come back with debilitating psychological issues, The New York Times reported Sunday, an apparent product of that US strategy. At issue, it seems, is the sheer number of times US soldiers fired artillery rounds at Islamic State targets. One man came back seeing "the ghost of a dead girl" in his kitchen, an apparition he believed was an Islamic State hex. Indeed, many of those deployed in artillery units "came home feeling cursed," The Times reported.

ATLANTA (AP) — Some Republican lawmakers continued to press Wednesday for changes to protect Georgia's voting system from security weaknesses, but a deputy to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger accused them of acting in bad faith and promoting lies that Georgia's 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump. The dispute with some Republicans in the state Senate stems from vulnerabilities in Dominion Voting Systems equipment identified by J. Alex Halderman, an expert witness in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Georgia’s election system. However, they say it's impractical to update all 40,000 electronic voting machines and scanners statewide before the 2024 election cycle begins. Senate Ethics Committee Chairman Max Burns, a Sylvania Republican, said at the end of the hearing he wanted to see changes. Fueling interest in voting changes are Republican Party activists who say that Georgia's 16 electoral votes were stolen from Trump in 2020.
